A pretty cool and short Roottrees-like, that makes me hope dearly for it to become an entire genre.

TLDR: Solid sleuthing mechanics let you piece together clues satisfyingly, but it feels like half a game. A proof of concept that borrows heavily from its betters without matching their depth or payoff. PROS: ➕Good information sleuthing ➕Music CONS: ➖Can’t select same picture for a different box…have to go to other box and remove first ➖Finding last names of people that work in a company shouldn’t be so difficult (Low effort point of the game) ➖Short with no replay value Content (Game world/Narrative) – The game world takes place between numerous pieces of evidence and a corporate organization tree, along with the employees pets. There isn’t much (any?) interactivity with the game world other than simply clicking documents and inputting names. It seems very one-dimensional with zero exploration. The narrative is somewhat interesting, yet a bit pointless. The interesting part is a murder mystery and using evidence to come to conclusions. The pointless part is spending so much time determining peoples last names in a company. Seriously, as someone that works in a similar environment, it would take 5 minutes to find everyone's name and position. As for the murder mystery itself, I’m not that great at detective work, and even I found it a bit obvious who the culprit was. Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – The gameplay is very similar to The Roottrees are Dead where you use evidence to come to conclusions and fill in a type of tree. The major difference here is the lack of internet sleuthing with all the evidence obtained automatically, so instead of spending time searching for evidence, you spend time researching the evidence you have. It’s a different change of pace, not exactly better, but different. The difficulty I found fairly hard. Aside from the obvious detachment of reality how surnames would never be this difficult to find, the clues were very well hidden, perhaps too hard. There is a hint system, but it wasn’t very useful, never told answers, and just pointed you in the right direction. I ended up having to use a guide for the last couple of names. Graphics (Quality/Technical) – Not the best. The font and writing are done well, but the pictures of people are not great, almost like crayon/ink blot images. The game runs fine, and I didn’t notice any bugs or issues. Graphical options are very limited. i9-13900KF | RTX 4090 | 64GB RAM | 1440p @ 240hz | Windows 11 installed on SSD Audio – Good audio. The smooth jazz is great background noise so much so that I feel like they copied the Roottrees soundtrack! There is no voice acting. Replay Factor (Longevity) – Very low replay value. You can get almost all the achievements in a single run. No reason to replay. Final Verdict – A Case of Fraud (CoF) is a mystery/sleuthing game very similar to The Roottrees are Dead ([url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/Synikx/recommended/2754380?snr=1_5_9__402]Review here, should definitely check it out ). It has a portion of the good sleuthing gameplay that Roottrees has, but lacks many of the things that makes Roottrees so good. The best part about this game is the scouring of bits of evidence to come to conclusions about peoples and pets names. Even if the story and game world fall short, it still nails the sleuthing gameplay well. What it severely lacks is finer details that encompass a good deduction game. Things like a fleshed out story, expansive detective work, and a satisfying resolution. To me, this feels like half of a game when coming from Roottrees, in fact, they are so similar in many aspects, that I highly recommend playing this one first, or else you’ll feel let down by all the copied elements, but missing the best parts that made Roottrees so good. Overall, yes, I do still recommend CoF. I think it’s a solid game and has good sleuthing mechanics, but with the drawback of being more like a proof of concept than an immersive interactive experience. Recommend? (Price) [Y/N] Yes $10 for a game with ~3 hours of content and zero replay value is a bit steep. Recommend getting it on sale. This is a great Roottrees are Dead-type deduction game. The goal is to discover the organizational chart of a dead CEO's company (and their pets, which makes a certain level of sense for the story) and then suss out the crime. It's quite a lot more streamlined with less research and fewer fields to fill, and faster as a result. Instead of hunting for evidence it's parceled out to you at milestones, jobs are automatically filled in, family members are not included (excepting the tutorial), and there's only one valid photo for each character for example. With a smaller tree and fewer relationships, it's a lot faster and can be beat in a few hours but it's still very compelling for a Roottrees fan.

A super fun, short puzzle game. I'm biased towards this genre because I worked on The Roottrees are Dead and this game is clearly influenced by it, but it was a great time. It took me about 3 hours to finish it all with no hints, and I found the puzzles very well designed. I recommend it!

We need to come up with good name for this genre. Genealogical games? Label-likes? This one is great though! I would call it short and sweet — it accomplishes everything it sets out to do and does so quite well. It's a bit simpler than Roottrees or Obra Dinn, but it remains just as punchy with plenty of satisfying solves. The story is sprinkled with corporate infighting, extramarital affairs, and of course murder. There's also some whimsy, with lots of animal pictures to sort through and some unique gimmicks, like fake Slack messages to sift through. If I had to criticize, it'd be these things, keeping in mind that this is still definitely a game worth trying: - They should've leaned into the animal theming in the story. It starts with the wacky premise of a corporation trying to make technology that lets you talk to animals, but it doesn't really go anywhere. So you end up with a fun but very grounded story about corporate intrigue, and then sometimes you see a picture of a horse. Given the setup, the story could've felt more special. - There are perhaps too many clues for a few of the solves. There were a few times when I thought I made a really clever inference based on limited info, but then it was confirmed by a redundant clue that made it feel less special. I wanted to feel like I was making a stretch. - The ending is a difficulty spike, which I can respect, but the logic and evidence is very fiddly, which I didn't like.
