this game is genuinely such a blast to play. the store page is not kidding about the shmovement. once you've got the movement down, it's incredibly satisfying to blast through stages. the artstyle and especially the character designs are also top notch, and the soundtrack is full of bangers. plus, the game's got a nice set of accessibility settings and general QoL features. don't like how much the screen shakes? you can turn it down or disable it completely. don't feel like mashing attack? you can toggle it to a hold instead. want outlines on enemies? you can enable that too. game too fast for you? turn down the speed. game not fast enough ? you can turn it up instead. it wears its inspirations on its sleeve and this is absolutely a positive, and the fact the whole package was made by one single dev is worthy of praise in and of itself. it's 100% worth the 20 dollar price tag. also, for the curious, it runs fantastic on steam deck. hop on peak.

When Sonic's movement meets DBZ's flashiness, you get Advent Neon. S-Tier Soundtrack, Level Design, Mechanics, Art and overall appeal. Definately my Indie GOTY! P.S. - A Game of this quality made solely by 1 guy is a mad achievement in itself. Congrats CRYOGX!

5 hour playthrough, fun score attack content. Very high skill ceiling. This is a "sonic" game for sickos. Pretty unpolished in some aspects but the core game they have here is actually super good. Definitely one of those games that I think an iterative sequel could really improve. There's a reason this game has a "speed" option. This game is SO fast. Pretty regularly you are faced with platforming challenges that are pretty strict on timing. Don't feel bad about picking a slower speed, on the normal speed it really feels like some of these challenges really only have a few frames to do them in the "intended way." Both the combat and platforming feel awesome though once you can get a groove going. Just be patient, and get comfortable dying unless you're a high-speed platforming vet (and really even those I don't think are quite ready for this speed.) Dodging into that big fuck-off smash really never got old, some great hitstop and sound design on that thing really keep it feeling as chunky as it should. Being able to stun bosses and knock them around a bit was fun too - even if I think they should stay stunned a little longer. Overall the combat is not especially deep (as in: the moveset is shallow) but that doesn't stop it from feeling super satisfying every time. It definitely helps that enemies don't have that much health, so it always feels like you're gaining momentum. The level design is a mixed bag. I think most of them have a pretty decent flow, but sometimes between unclear signposting and same-y backgrounds I found myself getting lost occasionally, or not immediately knowing what the goal of a room was. Most of my issues with the game's levels actually usually come down to the level gimmicks. A lot of them are fine in concept, but I actually just think there are too many of them. The amount of gimmicks this game expects you to grasp and put together is too high for sure. I'd say a "less is more" approach might be better here, I think this game could easily survive with about half of the existing stage gimmicks, especially considering that some of them (like the platform that slides you forward for a momentum jump or the magnet platforms) don't really get used very well. There's only one or two gimmicks that I just hated seeing, but one of them is ABSOLUTELY the spheres you have to attack to bounce off of. You basically only are asked to hit these with down-strikes, and those are tough to get out when platforming. Dealing with these was always a mess and never elegant. [Edit: I should maybe have said the game is too short for how many of them there are. If this game was like 2-4 hours longer I think the amount of stage gimmicks could have been fine. As is, they introduce them so fast that it's pretty overwhelming. Having them in the hub rooms to mess around with helps a bit, but does not really solve the problem. Also: No double-jump is a bold move for a platformer like this.] I was completely lost by the story, but did like the aesthetics. I wasn't really here for a deep narrative though, so I wasn't that bothered by just being along for the ride. Your mileage will vary. Most of the "unpolished" stuff I see in this game comes down to some wonky interactions, a couple of bugs (I soft-locked myself twice) and some animations that look like they could have used another pass or two. Like a couple of the lasers/fountains you see in this game just expand like you're corner-morphing (idk if that's the term) a jpeg in paint. Definitely feels like a first outing in that sense - and this game is promising enough that I think a second attempt will iron out most of these issues. Fun game! The speedruns for it are going to be bonkers.
