I was going to write "above average metroidvania" but this is actually a very good little game. The art direction is top notch, designs are simple yet consistent and nothing feels out of place visually. The character and enemy 2D sprites are hand-drawn and beautifully animated, even though not super high-framerate, all animations are fluid and work really well. The enviroment, backgrounds and particle effects are also pretty and detailed. Gameplay is tight and fairly simple, as far as character movement and actions go, everything works and I had zero problems related to controls, it played perfectly from start to finish using a PS4 pad. The game has a couple of "issues" that might turn some people off, though. The english translation is understandable at best, but the story is simple and even with the bad translation I was able to get what the characters meant to say. But the biggest deal-breaker here would be the difficulty. This is definitely not a casual game, a lot of people might be drawn to it by the cutesy catgirl and then get filtered by a boss fight or plataforming section. Don't get me wrong, some of the boss fights are really well done, but you can only mash your way through it for so long. Some bosses require a lot of patience and precision, you will have to "obey" the patterns and do it right or else you will fail. My biggest gripe with it though was a couple of plataforming sections, which are unnecessarily punishing and borderline unfair, not because of character control, but level design. Fortunately, with the right set of items and upgrades, everything is doable, I was able to get 100% map and items without much suffering. Another thing that might piss off some players is the fact that some essential items are hidden a little too well, but then again, only the dedicated players will find victory here. I think it's kinda unfair that this game currently has a "mixed" review score, seeing that a lot of effort was obviously put into it. Game journalists need to stay out, there's no easy mode. If you're a hardcore gamer who's not afraid of a challenge, this will be a breeze. But if you just want to relax and look at cute catgirls, you will have a bad time.
If you like MV games like Hollow Knight and 8doors then I would recommend this one. It does do that if you die you have to retrieve your soul thing though FYI. Like other people have pointed out, the last 1/3 of the game has some pretty ridiculous difficulty spikes, but they have fixed the sword sticking into the wall aspect of it. So at least that is manageable. I also thought the graphics were gorgeous! The bosses are also sponges, which is something to take into account. All-in-all I quite enjoyed my time with this game and would play a sequel.
Exorcist Fairy or 玄女（Xuan Nu） is a very fun game that is sort of like a cross between Momodora and Hollow knight. Xuan Nu finds abilities like air dash and wall cling to help her reach new areas. This game does have some neat mechanics such as freezing fireballs which allows you to temporarily use them as platforms. Xuan Nu also uses an amulets system which functions similar to the charms system in Hollow Knight. Visually I think this game does a pretty good job. Xuan Nu’s charter design is very cute and likeable. The enemy sprites also fit well into the game’s art style and environment. I will say get use to extremely short invulnerability times until you find amulet to lengthen them. A downside to the game would be some of the translation. While most of the translations in this game is okay for the most part. There are some spots where it is just not translated at all. Ex: The tutorial commands are not translated but are easy to figure out since they show you which buttons to press. Unfortunately, there are 4 amulets that are not translated as well as they could be. 2 of them hint at what they do and the other two just don’t have a description. The rest of the amulets are translated just fine. There are also orbs in the game that increase your maximum mana. This is only a problem because there are not any UI changes depicting the mana increase. That said, I still had a TON of FUN with this game and would very much recommend. I also hope the game developers consider making a sequel to this game with our same lovable heroin 玄女.
This is a fun, search action game. It's on the shorter side, taking me 9 hours for 100% completion. Mechanically, it is pretty fun. The areas are challenging enough, and the level design is interesting enough to make traversal engaging. The boss difficulty is a bit erratic. Most of the bosses are very easy, but there are a few that challenged me. The story and music are adequate but forgettable. I like the art style, and while animations are basic, they communicate what they need to about incoming attacks and so on. Be warned, the English translation is poor and incomplete. The dialogue is understandable. Some UI elements are not translated, but I was able to make my way through the whole thing despite that, so it's not a big obstacle. Despite the translation, I think it's very much worth playing. I had a lot of fun during those 9 hours.
