Inside your games config file (Documents\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config\PecanEngine.ini) is the following line of code : ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather Im sure you'll notice the spelling mistake ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTether If you fix it to look like the above and then play the game, the difference is pretty crazy!

As you can probably see, I have played this game quite a bit and believe myself to be familiar enough with the base game, DLC, mods, and community to really give a review for those of you who may be considering this game in 2025 or later. First and foremost, the base game is pretty...bad. The guns are inaccurate, as in when you aim down the sites, you can literally see the bullets hitting AROUND your site, not on it. The AI is bad, the voice acting is bad, the dialogue is bad, the story is bad, just a dumpster-fire overall of a campaign. The campaign was so bad that I actually haven't played the 'Stasis Interrupted' DLC campaign because I'm not a masochist and didn't want to subject myself to anymore torture. The multiplayer is supposedly fun, or at least that's what I'm told as I have never been able to play a single online game since purchasing in 2018. And this is an utter crime as there are so many movie maps from locations in the franchise that are absolutely beautiful in their level design. There's even a "Processor" map of the hive where the Marines get ambushed in "Aliens". It is such an awesome and eerie feeling walking around and seeing all of the locations from that scene in the film. But unfortunately, the map is useless because it is only available in the dead multiplayer modes. There are several other movie maps like this (Nostromo from 'Alien'/Fury 161 from 'Alien 3') that are completely unplayable because of them being locked behind multiplayer game modes only. The only thing you can do on these maps is explore them in offline mode by yourself. Now, if there were one reason why you should consider purchasing this game, it would be for BUG HUNT. Without a doubt the best game mode and the only thing worth it in this game. Bug Hunt is the games "Horde" mode, like CoD Zombies, where you just fight waves of Aliens and survive for as long as you can. Oddly though, there are also Weyland-Yutani Mercenaries in this mode which is silly. Supposedly Gearbox wanted the game to be more "CoD" like, which is the exact opposite purpose of the game. But still fun. Though there are only three maps in Bug Hunt mode, unfortunately, and I think only one of them is of any interest being "Tribute" which is Hadley's Hope. Although, luckily, you can improve the game greatly through mods from moddb. First and foremost, the one that everyone has to have with this game is Templar_GFX's Overhaul Mod. This mod drastically improves almost everything about the gameplay such as fixing the enemy AI, fixing the aim accuracy, the colors/atmosphere and overall look of the game. This is a must have. But there are also a bunch of mods out there, and with a little bit of effort, you can actually learn how to mod this game quite easily yourself once you have the right tools and know how to use them. For example, in the Hadley's Hope map for Bug Hunt, there are several locations that are inaccessible unless you pay for them, and a lot of the prices are quite steep so there was a lot of the map I had never even seen due to the fact that I was unable to purchase their respected gates. I was able to mod the game to where all of the doors are free so I could use the full Hadley's Hope map from the beginning of a game. I was also able to remove the Mercenaries and replaced them with Xeno's, then I also changed all Xeno's to the 'Warrior' class to make it much more accurate to the 'Aliens' movie as that was the only Xeno type in the film. The online community? There is none. I'm in several A:CM discords and no one ever plays it anymore so chances are you'll never get to experience the full game, which is understandable as it is a 12 year old, mediocre game. But the most frustrating thing about this game, though, is the potential it has to be great. There are so many things that have drastically improved the experience, but there's also so many things that are RIGHT THERE out of reach to make it even better. All Gearbox needs to do is give the community the tools to do so. For example, theoretically, it's possible to add bots to the offline multiplayer game modes using the games fixed AI system which would enable the multiplayer maps useful again. There is also the possibility of turning these maps into "Bug Hunt" Maps if Gearbox gave the Original Unity Map Projects to the community which would allow modders to customize the maps and use them more liberally. The only reason why this game has any sort of following is because of the modding community, so I am begging Gearbox to release the original projects for them. Underneath this awful game is an amazing one just dying to come out like a chestburster. So, would I recommend this game? If you're a big fan of the franchise and would love the hunt Xeno's on Hadley's Hope, then sure. Although I do think the price is steep at $15 considering the only useful mode being Bug Hunt, it's still worth it as a fan. For everyone else? No. Not unless Gearbox releases the base projects for the modding community. If you're not a GIANT Alien franchise fan, this game would be a complete waste of money at its base model.

Let’s start with the obvious: Aliens: Colonial Marines is far from perfect. It launched with a lot of criticism — some deserved, some a little harsh. But after revisiting the game and reflecting on what it did offer, there’s more to appreciate than most give it credit for. The campaign is surprisingly lengthy and supports up to four-player co-op, which adds a layer of fun and replayability. Sure, it’s not a groundbreaking story, but it stays true to the Aliens universe and delivers fast-paced action that fans of the franchise will enjoy. You’re not just running down corridors — you’re surviving against both Xenomorphs and enemy factions in a chaotic battlefield. Multiplayer is where the game truly shined, at least when it was active. It featured a wide range of game modes — from classic team deathmatch to an endless wave survival mode — and honestly, the variety was impressive. One of the biggest strengths is its deep customization system. You can tweak your weapons, your Marine loadout, and even customize Xenomorph classes. In my opinion, this game has one of the best reward and customization systems in any Aliens title. While newer games like Aliens: Fireteam Elite offer decent cosmetics, many are locked behind microtransactions, which takes away from the satisfaction of unlocking things through gameplay. Colonial Marines, on the other hand, made you earn your gear — a big plus in my book. Unfortunately, the multiplayer is mostly dead today, so if you’re buying this strictly for online play, make sure you’ve got friends ready to squad up — or be prepared to dig around for a community. That said, the single-player/co-op campaign is still enjoyable if you approach it with the right expectations. I’ve always thought that if this game got a proper remaster with updated graphics and some polish, it could be something really special. Imagine combining the atmosphere of Aliens vs Predator with the progression and customization of Colonial Marines — that would be a dream come true for fans. Finally, let’s give some credit to the developers: creating a game with three competing factions, solo or multiplayer, and keeping it all somewhat balanced must have been a huge challenge. In short: if you’re an Aliens fan, or just someone looking for an action-packed sci-fi shooter with a strong co-op element and great customization, Aliens: Colonial Marines deserves a second look. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s better than its reputation suggests. Aliens: Colonial Marines isn’t perfect, but it’s fun. Great co-op, deep customization, solid campaign, and underrated multiplayer. Flawed, yes—but worth playing? also a yes-yes. Disclaimer: This review assumes you have applied the AI tether fix. See here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/49540/discussions/0/3832042807502714513/ It's actually a pretty decent game. Just a fun co-op shooter with lots of guns, some progression mechanics, a co-op campaign, and a wave based survival mode. Worth grabbing during a sale and playing with a friend or two.

Search online for "classremapping tether fix for Aliens Colonial Marines" There's a typo in the game engine ini file, the word "tether" is spelled wrong. This one typo broke the AI's pathfinding. If you fix the typo, the game goes from being a 4/10 to a 9/10. It goes from being laughable to one of the best Alien FPS I've played. crazy how a single letter typo caused a game to get terrible reviews for like a decade.
