An incredibly innovative game for 1992 that is also an incredible pain in the ass to play today. Alone in the Dark laid down so much of the groundwork for the survival horror games that followed, and exploring Derceto still has a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. The fixed cameras, puzzles, monsters, and cinematic presentation were genuinely groundbreaking. Unfortunately, actually controlling the damn thing on a modern PC can be an exercise in frustration. The controls are clunky, combat is awkward, and general early-’90s PC jank is everywhere. I still had fun with it and absolutely respect what it accomplished, but this is one where appreciating its historical importance sometimes has to carry you through actually playing it.
Alone in the Dark is a underrated hidden gem classic that was overshadowed by games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, people only know about this game because it was the first 3D horror game and the inspiration for future 3D horror games, but not many people have actually played it they most likely only seen videos of it or even worse, play the later games in the series such as AitD 2008, AitD: Illumination, or the recent remaster which are all later entries in the series that made the series worse, Alone in the Dark 1 is a game that all gamers, even if they’re not a fan of horror games, should all play this game once in their lifetime because it’s one of the most important video games ever developed, Alone in the Dark 1 is short and simple but brain dead and it’s a very fun game!
First playthrough review time. Alone in the Dark is one of the earliest survival horror games. It uses supernatural horror ideas and focuses more on mood than action. The graphics look very old now, but at the time the mix of 3D characters and pre-rendered backgrounds felt new. The game is mostly about moving through a large mansion, finding clues, and solving puzzles while staying away from danger. Supplies are limited, especially ammo, so using them without thinking can cause problems later. Fighting is not always needed, and many situations can be avoided. Sound and setting do most of the work during play. Overall, the game is about exploring a mansion, solving puzzles, and dealing with danger using limited resources. Obtuse Mechanics: Combat is clunky, and missing a single obscure interaction can leave you wandering in circles. Verdict: A legendary classic that every horror fan should respect. However, be prepared to battle the clunky controls and dated mechanics—you will likely need a guide if you want to finish the game without pulling your hair out.
Alone in the Dark is a straight up classic, no arguing that. This is one of the games that basically built survival horror before it even had a name. But playing it now? yeah… it’s more of a f*cking historical artifact than an actual game you sit down to enjoy for hours. The atmosphere is still there, you can see the ideas, the tension, the whole blueprint for stuff like Resident Evil. But the controls? pain. The movement feels like you’re wrestling a tank in slow motion, and half the time you’re fighting the game more than the enemies. Camera angles, clunky combat, weird pacing… it’s all part of that old school charm, sure, but let’s not pretend it hasn’t aged well in some areas. Still, you’ve gotta respect it.
