Came for the Blast, stayed for the Ball. More specifically the Punchball, but ball is ball. We LOVE this game's presentation. A mix of Smash 64's UI and Game Boy Advance Mario Bros. is such a wild combination, but it just kinda works, and we LOVE the weird GBA-esque audio the whole way through. Literally the only reason this game couldn't fit on a GBA is that it's widescreen--this game's resolution is actually shorter than a GBA game's is. Out of the two campaigns--Antonball and Punchball, we have to say that we liked the titular Antonball... Less, honestly? It's mostly the mix of difficulty spike, and the fact that wow when this continue system is unforgiving, it's REALLY unforgiving. It's kinda wild going back here from ANTONBLAST, a game with not only no continue system, but no lives either; there, if you die, it's just back to the most recent checkpoint, no matter what. There is no such mercy here, and Phase 29 in particular is going to kick your ass. Slingshotting through those bricks in BLAST is gonna feel a lot more cathartic after the trouble they gave us here, for sure. Punchball was a LOT smoother, mostly because the lives/continue system makes a LOT more sense in a Punch Ball Mario Bros. setting than it does a breakout setting. It's also great fun smashing shit with the Punchball. We're now retroactively VERY sad (not actually very) about the lack of Punchball in ANTONBLAST beyond the enemies all making comebacks. Though, it is weird it doesn't end with a proper boss fight like Antonball does... What, you couldn't have us slam Danton in the face? We guess beating him up was a BLAST invention. Also, we're very curious how 2-player co-op in this mode feels; we SAW that 2-player score in the HUD there!

Excellent minigame collection that rocks in the oldschool presentation and provides some honestly pretty satisfying gameplay moments. It also has just the right amount of the rage-inducing difficulty of arcade games from way back in the day that make it feel very nostalgic as well as very fun! I have some gripes with some small mechanics here and there (like the instakill mechanics in Antonball), but those are minor issues that I can easily look past after the enjoyment I had 100%'ing this title. Furthermore, this totally convinced me to look forward to ANTONBLAST! Highly recommend!
