March 2025
Someone on YouTube described this game as a lost Dreamcast game and that's exactly how it looks, sounds, and plays like - in the best way possible (and with modern day polish). The game is immediately enjoyable and intuitive in a way that feels great. The references in the game are clear, familiar, but with their own unique twist on it. You almost feel rewarded for having grown up with games of a certain era for being able to intrinsically "get" what this game is trying to do. It's like realizing you, the devs, and anyone else who loves this game come to understand you're all fluent in the same language. I feel like people assume the whole furry angle is a bigger part of the game than it actually is. There are anthropomorphic characters, yes. Some of them have huge jugs and fat booties, yes. You may also make your own anthropomorphic character and give them huge jugs and/or fat booty, too. Or not. How deeply you want to read into all that and how much it will matter to you, is really up to you. For me, I put this in the same category as Star Fox or even Bugs Bunny - they're just characters. I'm not a furry, but fun character design is fun character design. And for the furries out there who more deeply appreciate bunnies, cats, wolves, lizards, etc with huge jugs and fat booties, I am happy for them that they feel represented in a game. A game that is really, really fun, unique, and satisfying to play. Point is, don't let the anthropomorphic (furry) parts deter you from this game. It's loaded with huge jugs and fat booties, yes. But it's even more cram-packed with joys of gaming from a bygone era, and a hell of a lot of charm, attention to detail, and fun gameplay. It's that perfect and rare combination of familiarity and newness that so many game devs aim for to get those sweet, sweet, nostalgia junkie millennial dollars... but so few ever get the equation right. This game gets it. It feels like a game I would have spent hours during the summer break playing in my basement, except new. Actually new. With huge jugs and fat booties. I almost feel bad that I bought it on sale. Now if you'll excuse me, my huge-jugged-fat-booty'd lizard mage needs to get back to some serious dungeon crawling.

My "definitely not a furry" friend showed me the single-player itch.io demo and said it was extremely fun. I initially assumed they were just being a thicc furry mommy enjoyer and using the excuse of "its fun" to hide it. Now that I've played it in early access, I can confirm that my friend absolutely drooled over Angela this game is incredibly fun to play, furry bait be damned. I love FFXIV but I'm a nervous wreck and dread playing with randoms, so being able to play this game solo is perfect for me. I really hope this game is seen through to completion.

many will call out, "old school MMO! WoW classic!" and others will call out "furry sliders!" as if that has any bearing on the actual gameplay but only God's chosen recognize a true functional PSO styled retroclone when they see it. It's not an MMORPG. It's a Network ARPG, and that's Based.

On first glance, Atlyss might appear to be a generic furry game, but don't let the game's suspiciously well-endowed animal creatures fool you. This is a tight, highly polished game that's aiming to recreate some of the old-school MMORPG vibes you might have gotten from games like WoW Classic, or even older games than that. The art style is charming and lo-fi (I even intentionally turned on the 'bitcrushed' shader to give it that retro feel), and the music is funky and thematic. As a whole, Atlyss has a sort of mystical, ethereal vibe, and it just feels incredibly cozy to play. The animations are bouncy and fluid, and the combat -- at least for my chosen class, 'Bandit' -- feels really good, too. It's a highly-mobile class that emphasizes quick movement, dodging, and agility over face-tanking and blocking, and its abilities all support this 'dirty fighting' style. And the controls... Wow. I've played games that cost 7x the price with movement that doesn't feel half as good as Atlyss'. In Atlyss, you feel COMPLETELY in control of your character at all times. Whoever programmed the character controller here deserves more praise than I can convey within the character limits of a Steam review. It's immaculate. Every single input you can give your character feels tight and responsive; yet entirely fluid, too -- frequently, games have to make a trade-off between one or the other. RDR2, for example, leans hard into fluidity and immersive animations, whereas others might have janky-looking animations but really responsive controls. Atlyss has found a middle ground, and I think it's the perfect sweet spot. Atlyss biggest strength isn't in its gameplay or visuals or big boofa possum waifus, though. I'd give that accolade to the multiplayer. Atlyss really comes into its own when enjoyed with friends. Got a piece of loot you can't use? One of your buddies is probably the right class or level (or will be in the future), so toss it their way and they'll return the favor next time they get an off-class piece. Finding it difficult to survive a dungeon when you feel underleveled? Bring some friends who can take the aggro and heat off you for a few seconds while you shove a couple potions down your gullet. I'd say Atlyss' biggest drawbacks right now are related to its relative lack of content (15 hours in and I've experienced pretty much everything, including secrets), it's over-reliance on "run at your face" enemy types (I can only recall two ranged enemies), and a somewhat surprising lack of cool stuff to find while exploring. I want MORE secrets with cool cosmetic rewards aside from the bunny suit, I want additional small towns and villages (alternatively, I want to see our hub expand over time), and I want to feel some sort of connection to the world and its characters beyond an affinity for their designs. None of these are damning comments on the game, though. These are things I think can be fixed given enough time. TL;DR: If you like old-school MMORPG style games, have a few friends who don't mind the presence of tits and jiggle physics, and have $10 to spare, just give Atlyss a try. You'll know by the end of the Steam refund period whether or not you'll like it.
