Fantastic game, and an okay metroidvania, will definitely be doing multiple playthroughs on the higher difficulties at a later point. For now, I'm content with my purchase; combat was great, general exploration was fun, and the story was well told, if a bit simple. The pickups that make up the bulk of the metroidvania exploration rewards were fine, health upgrades, coins to access optional areas, etc. But most of the optional scrolls were kind of useless. Magic upgrades were fine, but the tiger knee combo input moves were ones I never found use for, and were finicky to activate with a controller. Overall, still great, especially because I was more interested in the gauntlets and bosses than the rewards anyway, and they were phenomenal. If the devs will be continuing with the genre, I'd recommend a better map, perhaps indicating what's needed to progress past certain room transitions (a coin symbol, a black or white barrier symbol, etc) so that you can more easily see what you unlock with each upgrade, I don't think this is unreasonable, given the amount of walk-through floors/walls/ceilings there are to provide more hidden secrets (maybe hide these on the map, and add an upgrade to see them so we can still discover them ourselves though?)
Really fantastic. I'd guess I'm around 1/2 to 3/4 through the game as of reviewing, and I've loved it so far. The movement is responsive and feels great, especially once you've unlocked several/all abilities. The boss fights tend toward a fair challenge on the difficulty I'm playing on, and many of the fights are inspired, varied, and really fun. The base parrying mechanic feels excellent. Timing is a *little* tight in some places, but it feels tuned very well dialed in. The art and music are beautiful, and the world is a joy to explore. I only have two complaints at this point. 1) The counter mechanic (I think it was in a hidden area?) uses a very strange combination of buttons, in down+square+triangle. If I could rebind it to L1 or something, I'd be using it all the time. Out of all the adjacent face buttons to combine, square+triangle is probably the most awkward to press, so I never even bother using it. Pretty dumb. 2) The animation that plays when you get a heart piece is around 7-8ish seconds long and stops you from moving entirely. It's a short amount of time, but when you're collecting so many of them, often within a minute of one another, it becomes tedious. This is pretty minor, admittedly. Overall, unless something dramatically shifts my POV by the end, this is an absolute recommend, and I think many fans of metroidvanias and side-scroller combat and platforming would love it.
