This is definitely a hidden gem among metroidvanias. It's got beautiful visuals across diverse biomes, an atmospheric soundtrack, and satisfying platforming and puzzles. It's got a ton of boss fights and generally avoids having too many regular enemies, which I actually enjoyed for a change as I could focus on soaking up the atmosphere as I coursed through the world. The puzzles are pretty average, and the atmosphere and platforming are what I enjoyed the most. There are plenty of difficulty options, and there's always a save point before every boss. The map is also great and it shows the locations of areas where there's still something left to collect (except scrolls), and if there's an adjacent room you're yet to discover. It's only got a couple of minor flaws. One is that the boss rush is locked behind 100% completion, and there's no item/ability that shows you where you can find scrolls. I missed one somehow and it'll be a slog to track it down. Another minor issue is the endlag after your dash, which stops you dead in your tracks for a moment after executing it. You can circumvent this by immediately jumping to preserve your momentum, so why even bother including the endlag? It just makes it more annoying because now you have to hit two buttons for every dash to maintain the flow.

This game really opens up once you get past the demo's area and the first act. I really enjoy the mix of puzzle-solving and duels that make up the majority of the game, and they all feel fair. The minimap is also very helpful for tracking rooms you need to return to later, which is great once you get a means of fast travel.

This is a beautiful game in every regard. The atmosphere, even though it is in pixel art, was actually quite immersive and and often breathtakingly beautiful. There is really no non-sense here either, and by that I mean the story is to-the-point, the combat is not overly complicated but still satisfying, and the are no fetch quests/NPCs to deal with. The only thing that is close are optional platforming puzzles that give you coins that unlock some alternate paths. There was a decent amount of backtracking but it never felt annoying and there was always a checkpoint near the boss battles. I will think back to this experience with fond memories and I am sure at some point down the road, I will play it again.

Had a good time with it, but the controls definitely hold it back. You can remap the basic buttons, but all the actual abilities use fixed combos of those buttons, so you end up doing a bunch of awkward multi-press/hold inputs you can’t change. Fun game under it all — just super weird controls.
