BAKERU is a delightful game presumably aimed at the "Shonen" audience of young boys, but which anyone of any age can enjoy. It makes for an excellent action-platformer collectathon generally, but is an explosion of pure "Japanese-ness" that weebs will especially adore. Boiling it down, there are basically 3 core things that make BAKERU stand out: 1) We Have Ganbare Goemon At Home: Basically, since it looks unlikely that Konami will never port their Goemon/Mystical Ninja collection to the global market, or make a new entry in that series, then BAKERU and its absolutely *extreme* level of practically hyper-nationalist celebration of Japanese culture, tradition, myth and iconography makes for a great replacement. It's led by the two head developers of that series (and the rough plot outline is pretty much the same as the first SNES Goemon game), and it absolutely carries on those vibes of 90's platform heroes in a wild and magical colorful pastiche of the IDEA of Japan, not any actual place that's ever existed. You don't NEED to have deep knowledge about Japanese culture to enjoy BAKERU, as most of what you encounter is explained in-game (a constant collectible is literally pieces of trivia - often about Japan - distributed from a chibi poop mascot that shows up in every level). But it'd certainly be better if you already know who Momotaro or Musashi are, and many other references beside. 2) Precision 3rd Person Action Tight as a Taiko Drum: Though the game never gets *truly* difficult, it has extremely tight, snappy action combat centered around quick melee striking complete with perfect frame blocking and dodging with counter-attacks that could handle a much tougher set of enemies and scenarios, and occasionally scratches into a harder zone. The hit boxes on character models are perfect and the jumping is just as precise, which makes for some excellent platforming as well. More interesting though, is the game's camera system, because it more follows an early N64-era mold as there's ZERO manual lock-on, which is rare for a game based around melee combat with combos. Rather, the game uses strong homing effects on attacks the player makes, which makes certain elements of combat easier, but also makes targeting trickier with the longer range attacks you gain from special forms. It's actually a bit refreshing, because lock-on cameras have become SO ubiquitous that playing BAKERU sort of feels like stepping into a world where they never caught on. However, it must be said that in light of the precise combat and platforming, the game does feature a large over-reliance on invisible walls and inconsistent collision on shared pieces of geometry (stuff like how you can jump over a small fence in section A but not in section B), and there are MANY parts of levels that feel arbitrarily lengthened and/or have less of a skill ceiling because of them, 3) BIG and varied adventure in a seemingly small package: After playing through the first couple levels, I quickly felt like this would be a short and simple experience, but BAKERU has a frankly surprising number of levels - over 60! - and the team at Good Feel goes out of their way to make sure the gameplay variety is extremely high. Each level is always adding at least one new idea or gimmick or you're getting a synthesis of prior elements that hasn't been put together yet. One level you're doing more exploration with a maze like structure, the next will put things more on rails, the next after that might have a Sonic The Hedghog like running fast focus and the next will be a SCHMUP and the one after will be a giant robot battle. This is gameplay variety iterating on a core set of systems on the scale of a proper Nintendo Mario game Level Novelty here, which is really the highest plaudit I can give an action platformer when it comes to variety of play. So yeah, if you miss the old school adventures of "Kid Ying and Dr. Yang," or the type of confident mascot hero action platformer experience that is just a constant charm to experience from the 90s and 00s, or you're just a gigantic WEEB who wants to perform the meme and do a "Game = I ; Game, Japan =D" then you should probably check out BAKERU.

I got this game because the studio behind it is the same one behind Mystical Ninja and I wanted to support their work. The first few minutes into the game kind of made me regret I got it but I powered through the first 6 levels (which were incredibly easy and almost braindead) and I'd say that's around the time the game starts growing on you. The resemblance between Goemon and Bakeru is uncany and the similarities pour into the game itself. I think I must be a little under half-way through but there's plenty of collectables in order to 100% this game. I don't think we will ever get a Goemon game for Steam in the western world (even though there is a release for Steam in Japan) but I think this game scratches that same itch.

Genuinely speaking, i did NOT expect this game to be THIS good. I came in expecting an ok platformer, and left with a fun as heck combat 3d platformer that reminds me of mario 3d world and dk bananza. The soundtrack SLAPS, and all the locations are unique and pretty to look at. If you were thinking of playing this game, PLEASE get it. Insanely underrated

I absolutely loved this game. I didn't want to review it until I completed all of the stages, partially because I was worried it'd ultimately peter out in some way. But, to me, it kept it up until the end. I'd probably say it makes me think most of a combination of Astro Bot and Goemon. It has such a great style to it and really the entire presentation is just fantastic. It's certainly a platformer, but the focus is often l less on crazy acrobatics than it is on general exploration. I also really liked the way it uses drum sticks as your main source of combat, with a really fun control style that lets you control each arm separately for combos. You eventually unlock more attacks and transformations which I enjoyed. It also has a pretty notable amount of content. It goes on longer than it might seem at first and there's quite a lot to collect. The stages are fun and varied. Everything is Japanese-inspired, so you travel to villages and onsens and mountains and everything in-between. Quite a few are open in a sense that I think some people won't like, but personally I found that setup enjoyable. Additionally, there are several stages that are racing or flying themed, which are actually fun and handled well (in so many platformers these are throwaways). The boss battles are also engaging and I particularly enjoyed the giant robot battles you wind up getting into. The game is never hard, but you could leverage that complaint at a lot of similar games. I don't think it's a problem here. Like a lot of games in the "mascot platforming" genre that I think this fits into, you can focus plenty of time on collecting everything and trying to get the achievements. If you instead want to just barrel through the levels, I suppose you could do that too, but personally I think you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. This dev worked on Epic Yarn and Wooly World on the 3DS and I think that shows -- you could say a lot of the same "negatives" about those games, but I see them as positives. I could tell I would enjoy this game, but I had no idea I'd keep coming back to it like I did. The fact that Good Feel has worked on so many Nintendo games is not at all surprising. Personally this hit a lot of right notes for me. I can't wait to see what they put out next.
