UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER: THE FEAST OF THE WOLVES – REVIEW For starters, I am a huge Go Nagai fan, and Grendizer is one of my favorite series ever. Even though it is not canon to Mazinger Z or Great Mazinger (and honestly, I wish they would make games for those franchises too), I can say that this game is still a very enjoyable experience, especially for fans. Story The story of the game adapts roughly episodes 1 to 7 of the original Grendizer anime, with some minor changes and additional details to make it work better as a game. Interestingly, the title of the game, The Feast of the Wolves, is basically the title of episode 7 from the anime. So the game is clearly focused on adapting the very early arc of the series. For fans of the anime, it is really nice to see these moments recreated in game form, even if the story itself is relatively short. Graphics and Performance One strange thing about this game is that it really feels like a PS2-era title in terms of design and structure. However, the PC specifications needed to run it properly are surprisingly high for a game with this kind of art style. For example, on my old PC I can run Kingdom Hearts 3 on medium settings without any stutter or lag. But this game runs at around 15–25 FPS and becomes almost unplayable, with several bugs appearing during gameplay. Visually, the game uses a very cartoony style inspired by the anime, which actually helps it stand out. Unfortunately, if you play the game on low graphics settings, it honestly looks pretty bad. However, if your PC is strong enough to run the game at maximum settings, the visual style becomes much more enjoyable and you can really appreciate the art direction. Gameplay The gameplay itself is very simple. Yes, it can feel repetitive at times, but this is very much a “break time” game. It is perfect for people who are busy, since the whole game only takes around 7 hours to finish. The combat system is easy to understand, but it can still be fun. Occasionally, you will encounter enemies that have special shields which cannot be destroyed immediately. You need to deal with them in a specific way before breaking the shield, and this mechanic helps prevent the combat from feeling too boring. Another nice variation appears at the beginning of many stages. Usually, you start by controlling Grendizer while it is inside the Spazer. These sections play very differently compared to the ground combat, with gameplay similar to Star Fox or the Gummi Ship sections in Kingdom Hearts. There are also moments where you play as Kabuto Koji using his UFO in a bullet hell-style segment, which adds some extra variety to the gameplay. Missions Most missions follow a similar structure: Talk with residents in the area Escort them to a destination while protecting them from enemies This formula is used quite frequently throughout the game. However, some locations include exclusive missions, which is a nice touch and helps add a bit more variety. Boss Battles Boss battles are actually one of the more enjoyable parts of the game. The bosses have more varied movements and attacks, which makes them more interesting compared to regular enemies. However, the overall formula is always the same. Each boss has two phases. The first phase is usually manageable, while the second phase activates a sort of “berserk mode,” making them faster, more aggressive, and harder to defeat. Throughout the game, you can also collect items and treasures to upgrade Grendizer. Music Music… oh boy. This is honestly one of the main reasons why I kept playing the game. The soundtrack feels very refreshing and really captures the spirit of the anime. In my opinion, this is one of the freshest anime game adaptations I have played in terms of atmosphere. Final Thoughts To be honest, this is still a pretty mid-tier game overall. The gameplay can feel repetitive, and the performance issues can be frustrating. However, considering that the price is not too expensive, I would still say the game is worth it—especially if you are a big fan of Go Nagai or Grendizer. That said, I would personally recommend buying it when it is on sale. Final Rating: 6.8 / 10

A solid AA, PS2-era action game featuring a classic Japanese mecha. I love how this game introduces the concepts and story of Grendizer for those who have not watched the show. It is not mindblowing, it is not flawless, and I would even say it is clunky at times, but there is an undeniable charm to this game that is unmatched. I want to see more games like these about other mecha franchises that are not tactics games. Give us Mazinger, Devilman, Steel Jeeg, Raideen, I want to see them all!!!

I have mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, it gets many things right; the voice-acting (I played with Japanese dub), the artstyle, the sound-design, it is all very on-point. You are playing a few episodes of the old UFO Robo Grendizer, and you can tell the game designers are people who loved the show. That being said, this game is a bloody rip-off. I have 15 hours on this. That is 15 hours with like half of them spent running around looking for collectibles. The actual game is like 8 hours? Maybe 10? With 0 replayability. No New Game+, no new difficulty, no Boss Rush mode. Super bane-bones. If it was like 15-20 euros (which is how much I paid on a discount) I'd say it is alright - but 40 euros?! On top of other DLC?! Hell no! Wait for a discount. Most easter-eggs are useless by the way. You get nothing for getting everything. No concept art (which I usually do not care much for) which...how cool would it be, to get concept art of Grendizer and all the Saucer Beasts?! But no. No unlockables. Not even achievements. Not even acknowledgement from the characters! Pointless. Just get what you need to unlock the alternate skins for Grendizer (if you even care) and ignore everything else. Do NOT bother looking around for every last Tori Gate or Gren-Diner and such. There are some stages where you play as Koji in his TFO (Terrestrial Flying Object). Those are basically just very cheap, very basic arcade space-shooters. The game even lets you skip them, on your FIRST playthrough. That is how little they matter. In-between missions, you have a small hub; the ranch and the lab. They are pointless and just waste your time. Nobody has much to say. A simple menu would've sufficed, with actual cut-scenes in-between. Heck, how cool would it be if we had proper animation? This is a game catered to ANIME fans. We would 100% watch some original footage. We'd consider ourselves lucky too. We get to play Grendizer AND watch new episodes of Grendizer, over 40 years later? Yes please! But no. So....what IS good? The gameplay. If you've played Transformers: Devastation on the Playstation....it is very similar. You cannot dock on the Spazer unfortunately, and you do not get any of the other Spazers either. Would've been nice if it could've been included in finishers, or if you could fly around the stages - but no. Only in cutscenes and on rail-roaded space-shooter sections. But fighting on-ground is pretty great. Dodge, block, roll, weave and hit hard. Use all of Grendizer's arsenal (but again, no Spazers); Shoulder Boomerangs, Hand Beam, Screw Punch, Screw-Cruser Punch, Gravity Storm, everything is there! And the voice-actors will hammily shout the names of your attacks every single time. It is great. Ultimately, this game has its heart in the right place - but it does not do enough to warrant its price. It just needed....more. More hours, more story, more fanservice, more variety. You can't go in this expecting something spectacular. This won't change anyone's minds. This is only for Grendizer fans, and Super Robot anime fans in general. So if you want this....get it on a discount. anywhere from 10 to 20 euros is a fair price. You will have a few hours of fun, indulge your nostalgia....then uninstall and probably never touch it again. Which is fine. But I wish we got something more for the King of Space, and for non-Gundam mecha games in general. Alas.

Being a fan of Mazinger Z and it's spin offish series "Mazin Wars" A friend showed me this and said I would like it and after seeing the trailer and a couple videos I was sold. UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER is if mazinger Z was a interactive world game (I am familiar with the Sega Genesis game "Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter"...that was a beat em up with awesome animation!) you feel like you are PLAYING the show, it's a breath of fresh air with all the samey games we've been seeing lately. Has the music, dub and little things that make this title oozing with charm of Mazinger Z. You beat robots up, Cool boss monsters that are intimating and huge and it looks, plays great. One gripe and it's minor. The game seems jittery in 4K for me, but if I put it on 1080P it runs flawless. If you like the old style japan shows like mazinger Z or Ultraman You really should play this, it's a surprise and lots of fun!

It was a super fun little mecha game! If you are a big Grendizer fan/fan of the Mazinger series then definitely give this game a play. It has everything that a 70s mecha could basically ask for in a single game with it's music, stages, exploring, boss fights, etc. It's straightforward and faithful to the series and I love it! Although fair warning, it does have framerate issues here and there, but I was loving the game too much that it didn't bug me much at all!
