Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a game I loved playing as a child. Almost two decades ago, I used to try running through it - only usually getting as far as the Orb boss in the crypts before eventually being no longer allowed to play due to my dad kicking me off of the PS2. Despite him also being a big fan of this game, he never elected to play with me, which is a shame because replaying this game has made it very clear that it was balanced with the idea of there being two players playing at once. Dark Alliance is not a well-balanced game. Enemies, even on normal, are brutal, fast and vicious - tearing chunks off of your health in an instant. People used to things like immunity frames or strategy will be sent reeling as the game elects to show you that "hack and slash" is often "hacking and slashing you into bloody ribbons". Playing as the Dwarf is a trap, as being in melee of enemies is exactly how you become exalted with the floor, and Armor in this game becomes all but useless on higher difficulties due to the hit chance reduction being overwhelmed by the enemies sheer chance to hit you. There is no mitigation, save healing potions, and no defense save luck, and running in circles. in addition to this, Dark Alliance is surprsingly short, taking only about 9ish hours to complete - and that's with me spending an hour in two or three locations due to being repeatedly killed. Enemy drops, up until the last area, are pitifully weak, quests are almost non-existent past the middle of the second act, and exploration is often pointless and unrewarding. In spite of all of that, I had fun playing through this game again after so long. That being said, a good portion of that is my own nostalgia, and the rest is the satisfaction of being able to overcome the adversity and absolutely wreck house with my character - even eschewing the expected Final Boss Bane weapon because it was a one handed sword, and I had decided that my dwarf thought one-handed weapons were cringe. Dark Alliance is short, brutal, and not amazingly deep - but, if you enjoy challenging adversity, and don't mind waiting for a good sale, then it's certainly worth a purchase. Whatever you do though, even if you love titles like this, don't pay £30 for it. No matter how fond it is in my heart, I can't in good concsience recommend it at that price. I've heard good things about this game's sequel being both better and significantly less brutal on the player, so that might be worth checking out first instead of this one.

This was one of my favorite games on the PS2, alongside its sequel and the Champions of Norrath games. This is an ok version of that experience. The graphics are much sharper than on original hardware or even on an upscaled emulator, but it’s not very updated otherwise. The physics, animation, and gameplay are heavily tied to framerate (an artifact of consoles from the time), and so you’ll want to lock the framerate to 60 FPS. Anything higher or lower will affect the gameplay and introduce some audio glitching. According to the Steam page it supports cloud saves, but I haven’t been able to get it to work. Overall, it’s a decent but somewhat low-effort port of the game. If you can get it on sale and temper your expectations, it’s a fun experience, especially if you have heavy nostalgia for action RPGs from the PS2 era. I wouldn’t pay full price for it though.

I remember I really liked this game as a kid, I was quickly reminded why when I spoke with the bartender 1 minute into the game. This game is deceivingly difficult at times, it's very simple but it brings a lot of challenge. I'm a big fan of ARPGs and just mindless killing monsters, this has a lot of that. It has the standard "go deeper in the dungeon and kill stronger monsters for better loot" formula, and it's tied together with a D&D story taking place in Baldur's Gate. If you like D&D or simple ARPGs this is great.

This game is just about nostalgia, i was playing it every week-ends on Play Station 2, days and nights long with my friend when we were young. What a great surprise to see it coming on computer, i finished it again, alone and with my girlfriend and that was great fun. My only regret to be honest is that 20 years later, it is not a remaster, an enhanced or whatever improved version you would call, it is just... a port... At a 30 euros price tag, to me it feels like a deception, and only fans of the first hours looking for nostalgia might find it worth it. It would have been greatly appreciated to see a full remaster or even a remake of this masterpiece, but i could not complain, i was happy to venture once again through this awesome title !
