I am Batman. I leap from rooftops, punch bad guys, and dramatically disappear into the shadows with epic music playing. But what do I actually spend my time doing? Collecting RIDDLER TROPHIES . There are more of those damn things than there are criminals in Gotham! The Main Game Arkham City is like a Netflix show: at first, you're blown away by the plot twists, villains, and drama . And then, somehow, you find yourself stuck in a basement solving yet another one of Riddler's puzzles, asking, " Why am I still doing this? " When you're not chasing after green question marks, the game is absolutely brilliant: [*]Run away from Harley Quinn, who's basically that ex that just won't let go. [*]Fight the Joker, who’s having the time of his life while Gotham burns. [*]Crack skulls with combat so fluid it feels like you're starring in your own action movie. Combat Punch, counter, punch again. It’s a ballet of violence, but instead of fancy footwork, it’s fancy face-punching. Every hit feels satisfying, and somehow, you’re always the coolest guy in the room – even surrounded by 20 dudes with bats. Gotham City The city is dark, atmospheric, and filled with thugs who ALL magically know martial arts. You can’t take three steps without bumping into a gang that apparently graduated from the League of Shadows School of Street Fighting. DLC Highlights Harley Quinn's Revenge : Think Harley is done with you? Nope. This DLC is like she texted you at 3 AM saying, “Come over, we need to talk,” except her idea of talking involves henchmen and explosives. Bonus: you play as Robin, who tries REALLY hard to be cool, but let’s face it, he doesn’t even have a cape. Catwoman Episodes : Playing as Catwoman is like switching from detective mode to "steal everything that isn’t nailed down" mode. You’re faster, sneakier, and let’s be honest - you’ll spend 80% of the time enjoying her dramatic walk animations. Conclusion Batman: Arkham City is the ultimate superhero simulator. You’ll save Gotham, break jaws, and question your sanity while hunting down hundreds of trophies. It’s dark, it’s epic, and it’s absolutely worth it - even if you end up spending more time solving puzzles than fighting villains.

The first time I set foot in Arkham Asylum, it was like walking straight into Batman’s own therapy session: claustrophobic halls, shadows that felt like they were watching you, and this constant, gnawing sense that something awful was waiting just around the corner. But then Arkham City rolls out and, dude, it’s chaos on steroids. Suddenly, you’re not boxed in anymore. Gotham’s nastiest creeps get their own sprawling playground, five blocks of pure, unfiltered mayhem. Arkham City doesn’t just up the ante, it blows the whole damn table away. Game of the Year Edition is the one you want. Seriously, it’s like the director’s cut with all the bells and whistles, Catwoman’s sneaky escapades, Nightwing and Robin flexing in their own crazy challenge maps, and Harley Quinn’s last hurrah that somehow gets you right in the feels. If the original game was a museum piece, this is the entire gallery tour, audio guide and all. The first time I dove off Ace Chemicals, cape whipping in the wind, I felt like a total boss. The city’s not just background noise, it’s alive. Frozen, sure, but still buzzing with secrets, ambushes, and little stories that just kinda pop up when you least expect them. One minute I’m breaking up a gang beating on some poor sap, next I’m knee-deep in Riddler puzzles that practically taunt you. It’s not just playing Batman, it’s living inside his nightmares and dreams all at once. What really gets me? Arkham City’s tight. Yeah, it’s massive compared to Asylum, but there’s zero filler. Every alley matters. Every hidden nook is hiding something, usually trouble. Whether I’m clinging to the side of Wonder Tower or poking around in a sketchy morgue, I never feel like I’m just wasting time. Fighting is still the gold standard. That free-flow combat is just... a chef’s kiss. Once you get in the groove with counters and gadgets, it’s like you’re choreographing a street brawl with ballet moves. Addictive as hell, too. Most games wish they could make you feel this slick and deadly. Let's not forget the toys, because Bat’s got a bag of tricks that’s actually useful, not just fluff. Disruptors that short out guns, freeze bombs opening new routes, all that. Gliding over Gotham and swinging from rooftops? Never gets old. Honestly, feels more Batman than half the movies. But here’s the secret sauce: the villains. They’re not just roadblocks, they’re legends with baggage. Joker’s unraveling, Freeze is heartbreak in a cold suit, Hugo Strange is just next-level creepy. They all bounce off Batman’s own broken psyche, and it’s wild watching those stories crash together. That Batman-Joker relationship is straight-up Shakespearean. Every run-in oozes history and this weird, twisted respect/hate thing. The writing’s razor-sharp, the dialogue snaps, and the voice actors, man, Conroy and Hamill are on another level. Every scene just lands. And that ending. No spoilers, promise, but damn, it floored me. Not because it was huge and flashy, but because it felt right. Like the whole game was building to that exact moment, and it paid off big time. DLC? Harley Quinn’s Revenge is a gut-punch. The challenge maps and all the extra skins keep you coming back, but honestly, the main story is where it’s at. That’s the ride. That’s the legend. Arkham City is the top dog. Superhero games wish they could touch this. It’s gritty, thrilling, tragic, and unforgettable.

A classic Xbox 360 era game, it's still a MUST PLAY in 2025. if you change the values in the 'BmEngine.ini' file, you can play in whatever frame-rate you desire. Worth a re-play just to experience it in High FPS. (tested at 144fps) Easiest to recommend out of all 4 Batman Arkham Games. While i like Arkham Asylum's theme and style more, City feels better to play. Arkham Origins is cool, and Knight is a different beast entirely, but they're both built upon the mechanics in Arkham City. If you got the time, start with Asylum. If not, Arkham City is a tier above, do not skip. However, i do not recommend trying to 100% achievements, as there is some BS challenges especially with the Nightwing predator medals in the Riddler's Revenge DLC. its not impossible, but its a big time and sanity sink. Note: Nvidia PhysX 32-bit is no longer accelerated on 50-series GPUs, and will use CPU if turned on, leading to stuttering. That said, its feel like PhysX is more of a gimmick and maybe even immersion breaking at times, since some particles can look out of place.

Almost 13 years later, I finally played this game—and my only regret is not playing it sooner! Batman: Arkham City GOTY was an incredible experience, a true gem among superhero open-world action games. I had high expectations going in, and to my surprise, the game not only met but exceeded them (aside from a few small annoyances). Story & Characters – A Masterclass in Superhero Narrative The story is phenomenal, with Batman trying to save Arkham City from major threats like Hugo Strange and, most notably, Joker, who easily takes the crown as the best antagonist in the entire Arkham series. Mark Hamill delivers an outstanding performance as the Clown Prince of Crime, making every second of his voice acting an absolute treat. Joker constantly keeps the player on edge with his unpredictable nature, and his dynamic with Harley Quinn makes for an even greater threat to Gotham. A quick side note: Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC is a must-play. It perfectly captures Harley’s character as seen in Arkham Asylum, something that was unfortunately lost in Arkham Knight, Origins, and the disastrous Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, where she was reduced to being loud, annoying, and dumb just for the sake of being dumb. Heroes & Their Roles Batman is portrayed exceptionally well. Several moments force him to make tough choices—saving multiple lives at the cost of one, particularly in situations involving Talia and Joker. I do wish Alfred had a bigger role, but I still appreciated his presence, guiding Bruce and helping him navigate the moral dilemmas and stopping Protocol 10. Kevin Conroy delivers an outstanding performance, with some truly great lines, and his brilliance especially shines during Batman’s face-off with Penguin and Joker. In my opinion, he is the only true Batman, and his iconic voice will be deeply missed. Rest easy, legend. Robin’s cameo felt underwhelming, and I really wish he had been a playable character instead of Catwoman, who, while a great character, took up more spotlight than necessary. That said, I didn’t mind her missions being interwoven with Batman’s story since they created suspenseful cliffhangers, making me even more eager to see what happened next. My only complaint is that her final mission takes place after the game’s ending credits, at a point where I no longer cared as much about her story an plot that was mostly finished. It felt forced and sluggish to complete. Also, her climbing mechanics are frustrating and extremely unsatisfying. Gameplay & Atmosphere The combat system is greatly improved, adding much more depth to fights. Enemies now have new weapons, shields, and minibosses wielding hammers and other heavy weapons. Titans also make a return, and they are incredibly satisfying to defeat. These additions make battles feel more dynamic and force players to think more strategically rather than just button-mashing through encounters. The ending is pure cinema. The soundtrack throughout the entire game is phenomenal, but it really hits hard at the conclusion. Without spoiling anything, I was left in an abyss of thought, wondering: What’s next for Batman? I wanted to see more, to understand what was going through Bruce’s mind at that moment. The depth and foreshadowing in this game are incredible. The only thing that felt slightly lacking compared to Arkham Asylum was the atmosphere. While Arkham City is a fantastic open world, it didn’t quite capture the same eerie, claustrophobic tension that made the first game so special (not like it had to). Minor Issues & Logical Gaps One of the strangest moments was the Mr. Freeze boss fight. While it was mechanically creative, it felt somewhat forced, as if the game just needed to include a boss battle. Story-wise, it didn’t make much sense—Batman would have helped Freeze’s wife regardless, given everything that had happened before (rescuing Freeze’s suit, saving him from Penguin, etc.). Another oddity was the Hush side mission (Identity Thief). Somehow, Hush manages to escape Arkham City by trapping Batman in an apartment for, like, a minute. I refuse to believe that the same Batman who stops an entire city’s crime in one night just casually lets Hush walk free after a 60-second inconvenience. He even says, “I’ll hunt him down tomorrow,” yet it takes him nine months (canonically) to catch him in another game. 😂 Final Thoughts – Should You Play It? Despite these minor flaws, I absolutely loved playing Arkham City, and it’s a game I will always appreciate and recommend—to you, the reader, and to anyone who enjoys superhero games and action-packed combat. For me, Arkham Asylum is still my favorite due to its unforgettable atmosphere and the fact that it was my first Batman game. However, don’t let that stop you from playing this one—Arkham City is a massive, innovative upgrade over the first game and remains one of the best superhero stories ever told in gaming. Buy it on sale if you can, but even at full price, it’s worth every penny for the sheer amount of content you get.
