A cozy little puzzle game that turns organizing into something surprisingly intense. It looks calm and gentle, but once you start trying to shave a few cuts off, it quietly demands way more brainpower than you expect.

Bento Blocks is an aesthetically beautiful and intuitive puzzle game. The sound design and original soundtrack create a warm and cozy ambience that fits perfectly with the visual design. Each puzzle solving mechanic changes the manner in which the game is played and they are each introduced to the player in a manner that feels effortless and unforced. There are some puzzle games like Baba Is You that after passing a level has me feeling like I didn't understand how I solved it. These types of puzzle games can be fun in themselves, but in my mind what truly makes a puzzle game a rewarding experience is when it makes you feel like you're a genius for figuring a puzzle out. Games that do this really well are games like Animal Well, Fez, Tunic, Öoo, the list could go on. Bento Blocks fits right in among this list. Don't let Bento Blocks casual and cozy feeling fool you. As you progress deeper into the game the puzzles become more and more challenging, and some levels will take you a while to figure out. This is never a frustrating experience but rather very satisfying as you finally have one of those 'Aha!' moments. It can appear like such a simple puzzle yet you're left feeling like the solution is seemingly impossible. This, to me, is an indication of great puzzle design. I highly recommend this game to anyone who either enjoys a casual and relaxed gaming experience or a challenging puzzle game.

I am not going to lie...I got this because 'Inbento' is probably one of my favourite puzzle games and this looked similar. In this game you are trying to rearrange sushi pieces into the bento box. But instead of rotating pieces, you have to strategically rearaange them on the cutting board and chop away to create block pieces. The challenge comes in where you have a limited number of chops to achieve certain star levels. This game definetly feels more challenging than Inbento. Instead of focusing on just one puzzle, you are really working on 2 puzzles....the chopping board and the bento box. There is also a bit of variation, in terms of puzzle boxes food pieces. The loop music is fitting and the artwork is vibrant. It is a beautiful game to look at. But I do feel like it is a bit pricey for the experience. Although they aren't 100% compareable, I liked how Inbento had a story and characters weaved in. This added another layer. This game is more expensive and one dimensional, solely focusing on the puzzle aspect. Inbento felt more wholesome and cozy. If you are an avid puzzle player and MUST have them all, then by all means!! But I would honestly recommend it only on sale (given it is almost $20 here) because I feel like there are other games out there that give you more bang for your buck. Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable and relaxing experience (just a bit of a pricey one) >.>
