thoroughly enjoyed my stay in creature kitchen. it looks spookier than it is -- there's no jumpscares, and yeah the atmosphere is a little creepy but it's 150% more endearing than actually frightening. there's a real tenderness to the way this game is crafted, with attention paid to many little details that really fill out the experience. there's heart here, true heart, and that is a rarity in games. thanks for letting me help tend to the creatures.

The critters eat, and stuff. And you make what they eat. And sometimes they like it. If they don't like it, you check what they like. Then you feed the critters. And the critters eat.

You know how some games start out seemingly all cute and fluffy but then the more you play the more you realize it's actually a horror game? This game is basically the opposite. It starts out eerie and unsettilng and you think you might be in for something really scary, but the more you play, the more wholesome it gets. The creatures in this game can be creepy, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of them or that you can't bond with them over gourmet dishes. A short but sweet game that presents just the right amount of cozy and just the right amount of spooky as you serve food to the weird and wonderful creatures of the night.

So first of all, I need to say this: do not let the "horror" tag make you believe this is going to be anything scary - it's not. Out of all the games I've played in my lifetime, Creature Kitchen most accurately embodies the idea that the unknown, unusual, or weird doesn't have to be scary or malicious. Your goal in this game is to cook meals, solve puzzles, and find your way around a mysterious home. While you start off feeding ordinary creatures such as raccoons and crows, monsters and cryptids start appearing with their own preferred foods. There is no danger present in this game, and at most the only thing you might find unsettling is the atmosphere itself. If you are a veteran of the horror genre, the low-poly graphics and dark atmosphere is reminiscent of some classics of the PS1 era. The challenge mainly comes from figuring out the puzzles. You will have to look for clues as well as the documentation on the recipes and creatures for hints on what to do. Oh, and the frying minigame as well - that was quite challenging. I have played this on both the steam deck and PC, and it ran well on both. Anyways, highly recommend this game. I can't stress enough how special it is.

One of those games where you beat it and go 'awww it's over?', it was short and sweet, creepy and cozy, the perfect lil gem to tuck into for one evening. I do wish there was more reason to make every recipe, and perhaps more family members, but that's just because I enjoyed it and want more. The atmosphere was nostalgic and supremely comfy.
