7.5/10 Mix feeling with this game, start strong then fell apart mostly because of the level design. Game need to be more polish. There's voice acting that don't even say what's written while saying 2 thing at the same time. When you get a new power up, you get attack at the base from weak enemies, then go for the next stage where they will explain your new power... so it's make every god damn attack on the base pointless, specially the 5th time. I collected all medal and rescue everyone, but most of the stuff just feel that they're there just to be there, not feeling accomplishment for doing all this. Getting worst for the ranking system. I don't know, there's no reward for doing it. It's a bit messy. Lot's of potential gone to waste mostly by the levels design. Power are useful only in the area where you are force to use them, beside that, lighting is the top notch and the power to go. Game would have been way better if more polish.

Solid 7/10 game. The inspirations are clear and it mostly executes well, just a few design decisions that bring the score down. Really didn't enjoy having to clear out the base for the nth time for... reasons? And as others have said, most of the powers don't feel as good to use outside of their specific niche for progressing through the level, but if you stick to the starting power for most of the time, movement and combat feels good. All in all a good game, but definitely felt like it started off stronger than it finished.

It's fine enough. It feels really good to move. It aped Copen's thing from Gunvolt pretty hard and I don't begrudge that one bit. Fighting stuff rules. But the level design is getting me down. Rather than surveying obstacles in front of me and deciding how I want to utilize my kit as one does in Mega Man, I'm switching weapons every three seconds to utilize some bespoke interaction that requires a specific weapon. This platform only moves with the fire ability, this wire is only grabbable with the ice ability. Better switch switch switch to navigate the premade line the level designer intended. That probably still sounds like a good time to someone reading this, and to you, I say this game deserves your support. There's something to be said about the flow state of reading the cues the stage is giving you and responding immediately. It's like speedrunning the stage before you've even properly played it. It's definitely a high quality product and deserves a positive rating. I just don't think it's for me.

I'm very mixed on Berserk Boy but I liked it enough to finish it. It is rough around the edges in a lot of ways but it still offers up some action platforming fun. I enjoyed the core gameplay and how much Kei's different forms changed your combat and mobility options. As far as what I didn't like: [*]The game plays very fast but how frequently you need to swap abilities in the latter half of the game slows things down noticeably. [*]Some encounters are repeated nearly 1 to 1 for padding. [*]Some attacks have voice lines and you can't mute them. Kei is going to shout "LIGHTNING JUSTICE" a lot. [*]The upgrade system makes you chose between "boring but useful" vs "fun" and is priced so aggressively that a significant amount was locked when I rolled credits. [*]I've played a ton of platformers in my life and some control choices were very odd. The two notable ones are pressing away from a wall while sliding makes you jump without you pressing the jump button and you need to hold up to grab horizontal bars while in a specific form. [*]You have to jump through some less than intuitive hoops to roll credits. I really don't understand going for this approach over giving us a stage select screen with the same blocker clearly listed [*]There's a glitch I hit at least twice where you lose ALL your lives upon death. This is not an issue on normal difficult but on classic you have to start the entire stage over again.

Berserk Boy is a wonderful Mega Man Zero/ZX clone with the gameplay gimmick borrowed from Luminous Avenger iX games where you have to dash into your enemies to tag them. However, I felt like this gimmick is underutilized in Berserk Boy since the stages barely have enough enemies to keep the combo flowing, but that’s like my personal wish while it’s quite obvious that the game isn’t designed around combo-ing onto enemies since the stages have different layouts that make use of different Berserk Orb abilities. There is, however, a way to keep the combo flowing and that is done by collecting energy orbs that are floating around that replenish your combo meter as well as your energy meter. On top of that, they add up to your score which determines your final rank at the end of the level. The energy meter depletes when you dash or use different Berserk Orb abilities and keeping it full is a crucial part of the gameplay. It fills back up if you wait around for like 2 seconds, though. Except for this energy meter, you have another meter called “Berserk Meter” that fills up when you hit enemies, then you can use it to unleash the ultimate attack of any Berserk Orb which is quite useful. As you progress through the game, you gain new forms through new Berserk Orbs you take from the bosses and each of them has their unique skill sets. You have to make use of their unique abilities to progress most of the time and that’s a good way of presenting their abilities to the player. You can also buy new skills for them from Quinn who is located in Resistance Base. The whole story revolves around these Berserk Orbs. There’s an antagonist who tries to harness their powers to attain his goals which usually come down to world domination and as you can easily guess, the story isn’t that mind-blowing. It comes down to a cliché story where you have to stop this guy from achieving his goal. The protagonist, Kei on the other hand has a special ability that can merge with Berserk Orbs without any force. There’s also a talking bird called Fiore that helps you along the way who also plays a huge role at the end. There’s also a counterpart of Roll from Mega Man called Dizzie who dons the role of navigator but also comes down to help you with combat too when the moment calls for it. Kei is originally a teleporter who can teleport anywhere but chooses to navigate through the stages for gameplay purposes, of course. You can rescue other Resistance members you find in stages, collect Berserk Medals to unlock the ending and go for S ranks for achievements. The stages are usually long and make good use of Berserk Orb's abilities which is a good design in my humble opinion. You also get to unlock EX Stages after rescuing every Resistance member in each stage. I personally don’t have any problems with the game itself, but my only complaint is that the sprites are a bit big and some of them look off, but nothing that will take your joy away. The soundtrack is wonderful and iconic, I immediately fell in love with it. And if you’re wondering about whether it’s metroidvania or not, no. Most of the stages are linear, but some of them require you to take different paths. You could say that some of them are semi-metroidvania. The ending sequence was also blood-pumping with that new form and QTE stuff! TL;DR A perfect Mega Man Zero/ZX clone with a great soundtrack and a wonderful level design with lots of forms to choose from! Some stages are semi-metroidvania, but most of them are linear. If you’re familiar with Luminous Avenger iX and Mega Man Zero/ZX games, Berserk Boy won’t disappoint!
