Fun game, only problem is the English translation. It seems machine translated so a lot of the dialogue is hard to understand.

Pretty much everything in this game is RNG. Even after you do the job minigames, your salary still depends on luck. Sure, you can mess with the RNG a bit using "karma cards", but it's still RNG at the end of the day. Leveling up your citizen rank takes way too much grinding, and it gets kinda boring after a while. I’m not too far into the story yet, but so far the lore seems pretty solid. Note: Some words aren’t translated yet.

Big Winner is an odd life sim game set in a very strange dystopian setting where everything in life is determined by two factors: Your social status, enumerated into a 9-tier system, and how lucky you are at scratch tickets. Getting paid for your work shift? Scratch tickets. Getting food from the grocery store? Scratch tickets. Buying clothing from a boutique? You better believe that's done through scratch tickets. On the other hand, what jobs you're allowed to get, what tickets you're allowed to purchase, and such things are determined by your social standing. You start as a lowly Tier 9 (T9) citizen, renting a cramped apartment in the most out of the way section of the city, barely able to do more than go to your shift screwing components in on an assembly line and keep that roof over your head. But an opportunity presents itself for you to start rising through the ranks and get a better life for yourself. Rising through the citizen ranks involves playing the "Battle of the Big Winner" against other citizens. This is a very odd variant of Poker in which each player starts with a certain number of chips, and each round they're dealt 3 cards, face down. Each player takes turn betting, raising, or folding, until one player pays in the chips necessary to finish the round by forcing a showdown to see who's hand is better, the winner taking the pot. You're allowed to look at your cards before doing this, but doing so doubles the amount of chips necessary to take any actions. Winning enough games of this will increase your citizen rank, unlocking new opportunities for you. Per the rules of the game, there is no changing out cards, so the best you can do is look at your hand and judge the probabilities of if your hand is likely to be better than your opponents. However, early into the game, you unlock "The power of Causality," which is where the real meat of the game starts to show itself. As mentioned earlier, many parts of the game's economy are handled through scratch off tickets, and every time you play a ticket, you keep the spent ticket as a type of currency. These spent tickets can be used to obtain "Karma Cards," which alter the rules of the game by giving you passive bonuses, or giving you new actions to take. For example, one may allow you to, once per round, mulligan your poker hand and get 3 fresh cards. Or swap out one card in particular. Or change the suit of one of your cards. These actions give you ways to actually strategize and get better results. Thus the main gameplay loop presents itself: You live your life, you play your scratch cards, you turn the spent cards into special bonuses to make various things easier for yourself, and you rise through the social ranks. The game also features a main story scenario that develops as you rise through the social ranks, and a relationship system where you can develop your bond with various characters. Unfortunately I'm unable to have too much of an opinion on these parts of the game because the English translation is very very bad. The UI interface and gameplay instructions are understandable enough, but spoken dialogue from the characters gets mangled to the point that it's very hard to understand what people are talking about half the time. I'm able to get the general vibe of most scenes, but the subtleties of the competing character motivations and conspiracies against each other are pretty lost on me. Multiple times a character has died and the intended impact was lost in a wave of "Wait is that supposed to be someone I'm familiar with?" Still, the main gameplay loop is charming enough to keep me playing for now. If the above feels like something you can live with / power through (or especially if you're just able to read Chinese and play the game in its original language), I'm happy enough to recommend it.

Luck in Chinese culture is more than just a matter of statistics. It's believed to be a very real force in your life, one you can attract and even cultivate. So, I'm quite entertained to see a Chinese work take it to its logical extreme with a world that runs entirely on gambling. Ignore the massive financial collapse and just think of this, as the game itself describes it, as an absurd world where everything runs on luck. You need luck to move up in life, you need luck to make money, you even need to rely on luck or the kindness of your betters to eat, if you get so unlucky that you can't afford or find food. Your legal rights and privileges run on staking your "citizen points". Your job opportunities are gated by necessary skills, yes, but more so than that, you need luck, especially since your boss or someone higher up than you needs to give a recommendation letter saying that you deserve to have the fortune of upward mobility. There is no earning a hard day's wage, either, you are paid in lottery tickets that may or may not payout. Ironically, I actually heavily dislike gambling. I can understand the appeal but the consistency of my efforts and results over a long period of time interests me more than the thrill and the rush of winning or losing big in a matter of minutes. So, you might ask: why the hell did you buy a game that's based almost entirely on gambling? One, I like these devs. I bought their previous game, River Town Factory, and enjoyed it greatly. Two, there's a "Casual" mode where you don't need to keep constantly gambling your rights to participate in society away. And three, these devs make really addicting core gameplay loops (gambling aside) and incredibly endearing, well-thought out characters and character stories. I don't want to spoil things, but my River Town Factory wife, Chai Feifei, had an incredible journey of a sheltered and mean princess growing up into an adult that would develop her own moral compass and the inner strength to follow through on her beliefs and what she believes is right, even if it means having to sever ties with almost everything and everyone that gives you comfort and opportunities. So you can imagine how happy I am that there is a reincarnated version of her, and one of her first introductory lines is accusing you of being some hired goon meant to bother her because clearly, you are not prestigious or rich enough to be a legit customer at her business. God, I love rich redheads insulting me to my face. Anyway, I'm early into the game, but I'm enjoying myself. I can see that same talent for engaging progression, core gameplay loops that hook you, and exciting and interesting human stories delving into characters that are more complex than their first impressions might give you. Outside of the gambling, there is a satisfaction in the mini games, the cooking, the challenges of keeping yourself fed, entertained, and rested, and just exploring the urban environment in all its pixel art beauty, and also the aforementioned reincarnated wife from another lifetime who's still basically the same. I find myself engrossed with the treadmill of trying to advance in life, seeing my privileges go up, looking forward to that next thing I can unlock and really feel like I'm a lowly corporate drone slowly rising to the top of the world through a mixture of hard work and luck. And as for the mandatory gambling? Well, I believe in the heart of the cards. That is, hope I get good hands as I commit psychological warfare on my opponents and use my supernatural powers to rig the game in my favor. Please, do consider getting this game. It's far from perfect, there are serious bugs at launch, and the English translation is incomplete and an obvious, admitted beta. But, it's like 10-15 bucks US, it's by indie devs with a lot of heart and soul, and the gameplay is fun, even if it doesn't give you a safe outlet to indulge your scratch card addiction or 1v1 poker compulsions.
