Buy it for the museum of pixel art and animations The game itself is a grind but I expected that it's a previously mobile game turned offline playable so 90% of the gameplay loop is gathering items to upgrade units. I enjoyed it got almost every achievement but one. My only gripe is the amount of anime waifu's that don't even fit the artstyle. You will eventually have to use a whole roster of them to do the extreme missions but it's still fun gameplay.
I didn't play the original, but I gotta say this was enjoyable for the first 15 hours. The pixel-art is amazing, and the different units are very cool and unique. I especially like the carnivorous plant that duplicates itself when using its special ability. My main problem lies with how economy is handled in a round. When you haven't upgraded your income much in the upgrades menu, the game has a much slower pace where you get to time your units' special abilities. As you get further and have a much faster income, the game instead forces you to spam units senselessly. In a game where the combat is so simple, you need the player's choices to matter and feel impactful. I rarely got that feeling after those first 15 hours, as all I could do is click deploy on all units I could afford without thinking. Overall, the game is still good enough to buy at a discount (like 60% or more) considering the staggering amount of attention to detail in the visuals.
It is the offline version of the former Metal Slug Attack gacha game. It is very good, being you can grind and get everything for free. No energy or paid currency. (Unlike Metal Slug Defense, which is a worse version of this game in almost every way). You are limited to certain units until you reach milestones, forcing some team building and grinding throughout. It has anime designed characters in it, but such is the mobile game genre. It has many old metal slug units to get, and a fair and rewarding upgrade system. All in all a solid game for fans of the IP, especially on a sale.
