Many good things to say about this one. 9 out of 10 The art and environment are so polished. The physics and puzzles are so fun. I died a bunch, but you lose so little progress that it doesn't feel like punishment(except the last level). This is going to win awards, but if you don't repost the demo then you will make less sales.

Bionic Bay is an exceptionally well designed physics based puzzle platformer with plenty parkour elements. You will run, jump, roll and skydive through the wonderful sci-fi environment in gorgeous pixel art. The playable character - while drawn in pixels - uses skeleton animation that looks a bit clumsy at times, but thankfully it's not too goofy to distract from the experience. The overly generous checkpoint system fights potential moments of frustration so that the difficulty is overall very forgiving. Multiple powerups are introduced during the campaign and have you manipulate your surroundings in various ways. One of the most prominent powers is swapping your position with an object that you previously marked, opening many curious puzzle situations. The main campaign is split into levels that use different variations of these Powerups, keeping the gameplay varied and interesting. The environment itself introduces various interactive elements and hazards such as rockets, electric cords and ice. The endless caves and foreign machineries set up a great atmosphere that is supported by a convincing ambient sound backdrop. Actual music tracks are played at several key points of cinematic nature - be that some intense action scene or a calm cinematic moment. Sound effects are performed exceptionally well and bring life to all your footsteps, explosions and freezing moments. The story is vague and leaves for interpretation with envorionmental storytelling occasionally interrupted by occasional brief intermissions. You're here for the journey and not for the ending - a common theme in these types of games. One of my biggest gripes with the game are the gravity spheres that make you walk like on a tiny planet. To move on such a sphere you have to press the literal direction on the screen instead of just pressing left/right to continuously move clockwise/counterclockwise. It's as if you'd have to rotate your stick in a loop-de-loop in Sonic the Hedgehog instead of just continuously pressing right. This also gives more room for errors and can get frustrating when you're being chased by hazards. Fortunately this issue has been forwarded to the devs so an alternative control scheme will hopefully get added at a later point. EDIT: The devs have already added the alternate control method as an option in the game menu. I tried it a bit and while it needs some improvement I appreciate their quick response to solving these kinds of issues. Kudos! Additionally there's an online challenge mode where you race against other players' ghosts. The missions are time limited and so far it seems like they're unique levels not found in the campaign. Definitely a fun way to add a little padding once you've completed the main campaign! Overall I'd highly recommend Bionic Bay for fans of platformers and pixelart who don't shy away from some challenging bits! Side note: I wanted to avoid the comparison to other games even though they are two very obvious candidates which also happen to be among my favorite games of all time: Limbo and INSIDE. These games have been cloned countless times, and while there are some quite good exceptions none would ever reach the quality of the originals, on the contrary. I don't want to reduce Bionic Bay to being another clone even though this game has a lot in common with them. But there is so much unique creative force and originality that Bionic Bay, for me personally, deserves a spot on the throne next to these other two favorites of mine.

Bionic Bay is a game built around an engine that has the most potential I have ever seen. Its movement is buttery smooth, the graphical capabilities are beautiful, and the game mechanics within it feel effortless to use. But this game refuses to go beyond the surface of what it can achieve. While the movement is incredible, the level design never allows it to shine. The few moments when you are pushed along a straight line, dodging lasers and obstacles at breakneck speed, were frustratingly only two 30-second-long portions of a 5-hour experience. Instead, most of the game is spent methodically climbing up jagged edges and across tiny platforms. If you are ever given a moment to run, it is soon cut short before any momentum can be built up. The number of mechanics introduced in this game is mind-boggling. Nearly every 10 minutes an entirely new object or mechanic gets used, then immediately thrown away, never to be seen again. Obstacles that jump when you do, pneumatic tubes, time-slowing light, anti-gravity fluid you can jump off of; just a few of the many mechanics that are introduced for 10-minute periods and then never touched again. Some lucky mechanics do come back: bouncing lasers and freeze rays are all frequent throughout each level by a certain point, but these are only two of the tens of mechanics that should build off of one another. All of these mechanics seem to be able to work with one another well, but Bionic Bay instead drops them the second they get interesting. Any reviews you see talking about how the game is "padded" are not because too few mechanics exist to fill the space but because they are simply just underutilized, leading to repetitive gameplay. The player’s abilities are amazing. The game is 90% about the swap mechanic, which is good! I’m glad they devoted enough time to fully explore what you can do with it. But Bionic Bay introduces 3 other abilities only used in 4 levels, and never all together. The ingenuity that the swap, gravity change, time stop, and power glove abilities could achieve if used all at once creates endless possibilities. Any talented level designer could create an incredible experience using any combination of the 4, but this game leaves no time for that, ending just as you have the chance to see how each ability could work together. The swap ability, time stop, and power glove specifically could do amazing things together, creating the greatest momentum-puzzle game ever. Finally, the story. It's good! The atmosphere and teaspoons of lore you get are incredibly intriguing. But I constantly just wanted moreeee. You can go hours in this game without encountering any actual story moments simply because they are spread so far apart from one another. With such an amazing basis, I wish every level had the scientists you find around the facility that give you that desperately wanted info. Also, the camera almost always refuses to zoom out. You get the sense you are in an area that is seemingly endless and fit for a giant, but the camera is only ever directly locked into your character. There were one or two moments where the camera zoomed out on a large set piece, but once again it was far too little for how much potential this game has to take advantage of the amazing art it has. Even when it did zoom out, it never did during gameplay. The second I moved, it came right back to me. Let me feel like an ant crawling up these mountains of machines! This game is good. Beyond all my complaints, I deeply enjoyed my experience. But this is a 6/10 game resting on the potential of GOTY. I deeply implore the devs to add a level editor of some kind. The pure puzzles or platforming challenges that could be made out of this engine are limitless. Leaving this engine trapped behind this game, good as it is, would simply be a disservice to the many full games that could be made on the back of this game. Play this game, enjoy it. Let yourself be lost in its atmosphere and tight controls. I fully recommend it, because it is good, but it could be incredible.

Very solid puzzle platformer with a fantastic audio/visual design. Will produce a lot of laughs if you enjoy your character getting blown up and rag-dolled into oblivion. One of those games where you'll die a lot but it's not an inherently difficult or demanding game. Only really downside for me was that the game overstays its welcome ever so slightly, there's just a bit too much space between new ideas/mechanics but this is very minor. Has a neat little online time trial mode for some extra replay value but otherwise this is likely a one and done type game for most people. Clean 8/10 video gaming

It's overly padded. Unlike similar games Limbo or Inside, the levels in Bionic Bay test the same skills repeatedly with too little variation or new ideas introduced. It's a good game and I'm glad I played it, but by the end I just wanted it to be over.
