Golly, I know I am not the most skilled gamer but this one stretched me to the gills for 27 hours. Chapters 19-23 probably took 80% of that time to get through them and but for walkthroughs I would still be stuck in there somewhere. That said, I really enjoyed the innovative mechanics of these puzzles, using the physics of gravity, time distortion, dimensions and teleporting to mix it up. Not really sure what a dog's snout at the end meant but the story was a sidelight for me. I was just trying to survive these "Twilight Zone-like" environments....though I died a thousand deaths in every level after #19.

General: I had fun with the game, even though some sections were frustrating and very inconsistent due to it being a "physics game". The developers advertise it as speedrunning-friendly, but I was not so sure after a random box sniped me out of the air with deadly precision, because it got accelerated by a moving platform situated somewhere in the rural area of Nebraska. The physics of this game are its blessing and a curse - a blurse - the reason you can "luck out" and solve a complex puzzle immediately or try the correct solution 30 times in a row and still not get it. Thankfully the game is generous with checkpoint placement. The tense sequence at the end where you have to put all of your platforming skills to use can end very abruptly due to bad RNG and is very frustrating to play through times and times over, killing you in the most random ways possible (usually not the impression you want to leave right at the end of something). Speaking about the end - I agree with other reviewers about it. Not a good ending, unfortunately, I felt borderline tricked. Just... don't put too much stock into the story, m'kay? Play for the mechanics. Movement: The movement feels extremely smooth and I had fun shmooving at 50 mph though the level. The "powers" you get are great, with no jank whatsoever (in my playthrough at least). The gravity switching mechanic felt surprisingly smooth (I usually hate it when games do that), but made the level design a bit confusing. It also cheapened the cinematic aspect, I think, since with no up or down there was no picture composition. Puzzles: As mentioned before, some puzzles are a dice roll. The actual puzzle design is good, brilliant even, BUT… But it has a problem with consistency. Good luck figuring out what is an explosive and what is not without dying to it first. Sometimes a piece of scenery is a progression-critical lever, sometimes it is a platform, but skip 4 levels and that platform decides to redecorate the environs using you as organic biodegradable paint. Is this a background element or can you climb on it? Will this block freeze you or is it frozen itself and therefore harmless? Take a leap of faith and find out. Now, mind that examples like this are rare, but they do happen. Learning by dying is a part of the experience, the game will never set you back far enough to make it feel TOO unfair. Art Direction/Story: As an artist I deeply respect how repeating assets make for levels with so much variety and identity. Very good pixel art, and the game can be described as essentially "built from lego bricks", since you will be encountering the same assets over and over, but presented freshly, mixed and matched, resized, squashed, squished, stretched etc. I think that's neat! Also got good colors, they scratch my brain nicely. Good reference material if you are looking for megastructure visuals. The story is... It's not there, I have to be honest. Which is a shame, because the developers could have definitely fit in some little bits and pieces given time. The project could have benefitted greatly from adding little bonus areas with extra logs that would immerse the player deeper into the world. There is no optional content at all, in fact, which is fine, but a shame. It goes as low as to insult its world with names like "The Incident" and "The Company", which would have been fine for an ironic or satiric piece of art, but, I believe, does not shine in this game, because Bay is very particular with its world, yet the worldbuilding is flat. The reason as to why is that it was simply not the focus when developing Bionic Bay, but oh man... The world is so meticulously crafted visually, it is almost sad there is nothing for a worldbuilding nut like me. Conclusion: As all things good in life, Bionic Bay is imperfect, but very enjoyable. Can definitely recommend it if you are looking for a good puzzle platformer. Despite all the negative bits it is a beautiful, snappy and very enjoyable game. Overstays its welcome slightly. Worth the price tag. 7/10 wiggling doohickeys, would wiggle again

Excellent trial and death game. Great atmosphere and music and interesting puzzles with ingenious mechanics. I strongly recommend this. You will die a lot but the restarts are instant and usually the deaths feel fair - there appears to be a bit of randomisation meaning some attempts will be easier than others and there are a few places where it's difficult to tell which platforms can be used but this is not really a problem because of the trial and error nature of the game.

I am a platformer junkie(Talking N++, Ori series, Metroidvanias and the like), but I also like athmospheric games. This game just ticks all the boxes. The world is beautiful. The scenery slowly changes with each level, but it keeps the overall atmosphere. During the game, you also unlock new abilities, and have to work out new puzzles, it keeps itself fresh. Mechanics are also really well thought out. Story telling is mostly through environments, and very rarely by text, but it never feels alien to the game itself :) I would say this is not a super hard game, but one which is well worth it to play. If you love oldschool platformers(OG Prince of Persia, Another world), you'll like this for sure!

I knew going into this game that it had gorgeous art. I knew it had interesting physics mechanics, and novel puzzles. What I didn't know is that the movement in this game controls like absolute silk. It's smoother than buttered glass. You have full analog movement, air dashing, wall climb, from about minute 2 of gameplay. Super meat boy could take some notes. Platforming challenges that would have thrown me for a loop in most games are trivial here, because the character goes exactly where I want him to go, every single time. I can land on point sized platforms, easily and reliably. This is now my new standard for "does your 2D platformer control well?" I would play Random Errand Simulator if the movement felt like this. Controller definitely required, I don't think I could beat this game without one. Oh, also, the game has incredibly frequent checkpoints, less than 60 seconds between them. And you're gonna need it, because you die a lot. However, they've counteracted the frustration by making the vast majority of your deaths *hilarious*. The ragdoll and gib physics are just inherently funny, every time.
