Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 is a confident and lovingly crafted sequel developed and published by INTI CREATES CO., LTD. that fully embraces its identity as a modern homage to classic 8-bit action platformers. Building directly on the foundations of the original Curse of the Moon, this sequel refines nearly every aspect of its design while expanding the scope, replay value, and character variety. Rather than attempting to modernize the genre beyond recognition, it doubles down on precision-based combat, deliberate movement, and punishing-but-fair challenge, appealing strongly to fans of old-school Castlevania-style gameplay. The game’s structure is episodic, with multiple campaigns that gradually unlock as you progress. While the narrative itself remains relatively minimal, it serves its purpose as a framework for the action, following Zangetsu and a diverse group of allies as they confront demonic forces across castles, laboratories, and nightmarish landscapes. Each episode introduces new twists on the formula, encouraging players to revisit stages under different conditions and character restrictions. This layered structure gives the game a sense of momentum and progression far beyond a single linear campaign, making the experience feel dense and rewarding. At the heart of the game is its tightly tuned gameplay. Movement and combat are intentionally deliberate, emphasizing careful positioning, enemy pattern recognition, and commitment to each action. Attacks have weight, jumps must be measured, and mistakes are punished quickly. This design philosophy stays true to the genre’s roots, where success comes from learning enemy behaviors and mastering level layouts rather than improvising on the fly. Despite its old-school sensibilities, the controls feel responsive and consistent, ensuring that failure almost always feels earned rather than arbitrary. A major strength of Curse of the Moon 2 lies in its expanded roster of playable characters. Each character brings a distinct playstyle that significantly alters how stages are approached. Zangetsu serves as the balanced core, wielding a sword and traditional sub-weapons, while other characters introduce long-range firearms, extended melee reach, mobility-focused abilities, and even unconventional support mechanics. Switching between characters mid-stage adds a strategic layer, as certain obstacles and enemy placements clearly favor specific abilities. This variety encourages experimentation and replay, as revisiting levels with different party compositions can reveal new paths and solutions. Difficulty is a defining element of the experience, but it is handled with flexibility. The game offers multiple modes that cater to different audiences, ranging from a more forgiving setting that reduces frustration to a “Veteran” mode that fully embraces classic mechanics like knockback, limited lives, and harsher penalties for mistakes. Even on easier modes, the game maintains a firm challenge, while higher difficulties demand precision and patience. This balance allows newcomers to acclimate while still providing a deeply satisfying test for genre veterans. Visually, the game excels in its deliberate retro presentation. Pixel art is crisp and expressive, with detailed enemy designs, fluid animations, and environments that feel varied despite the constrained 8-bit aesthetic. Backgrounds are rich with gothic atmosphere, and visual effects add clarity to combat without cluttering the screen. The soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly, delivering energetic chiptune compositions that heighten tension during boss fights and reinforce the sense of classic adventure throughout each stage. Replayability is one of the game’s standout qualities. Multiple endings, hidden stages, branching paths, and unlockable episodes give players strong incentives to return long after the initial completion. Local co-op further enhances this longevity, allowing two players to tackle the campaign together and coordinate character abilities in creative ways. This cooperative option adds a fresh dynamic to familiar stages, making repeat playthroughs feel meaningfully different rather than routine. While the game does not radically reinvent the genre, that restraint works in its favor. Curse of the Moon 2 is clearly designed as a celebration and refinement of a specific style of action platformer, and its success lies in execution rather than innovation. Some players may find the difficulty spikes intimidating or the retro limitations restrictive, but for those who appreciate deliberate pacing and skill-driven gameplay, these elements are part of the appeal. Overall, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 stands as an excellent example of how to build upon a strong foundation without losing identity. It delivers tight mechanics, memorable stage design, and a wealth of content wrapped in a polished retro package. For fans of classic action platformers and the Bloodstained universe alike, it offers a deeply satisfying experience that rewards mastery, experimentation, and persistence, proving that traditional design principles can still shine when executed with care and confidence. A good Classicvania (2). It is much harder, larger, more replayable than the first one. And you can play it with a friend too. It might be a little frustrating at times, like NES Castlevanias, but with some patience and effort it is doable. Do not rush to complete the game and do remember to take little break if you find yourself stuck somewhere.

I don't usually do multiple playthroughs of the game, but this game made it worth it with it's true ending. Truly amazing game.

Fantastic game! Played this maybe a dozen times on console before buying it here. It's one of the most mechanically satisfying action platformers I've ever played. Hoping that with the announcement of the Scarlet Engagement they make a Curse of the Moon 3!

I gave up my 100% achievements run, like nope, this game is too much repetition or too much run needed in order to 100% it. if I review it for only casual game than of course, I think Bloodstained CotM2 is a great sequel that improve so many thing from the previous installment, but I wouldn't lie that there are too much hassle and side quest to finish the true ending and the difficulty curve at the final episode is too much for me. But I still recommend it for anyone who want classic Castlevania game, maybe specifically for like Rondo of Blood or Castlevania IV fans.
