Bober Bros' 2024 debut titles seem to have come out of nowhere (for me, at least!)...and they're actually incredibly exciting. It's Just a Prank tells the tale of three young children in a somewhat unhealthy competition to outprank one another. What starts off with whoopie cushions on seats and throwing paper balls at teacher quickly spirals out of control...and, unfortunately, protagonist Filip has cried wolf too many times for the adults to believe his story. There are lots of facets to this short tale: coping with child abuse (all three children are from broken families, and Agatha's father is an abusive drunk), mental illness, and the cruelty humans can inflict on each other. Some chilling camera angles and plot beats really help it stand out for all the right reasons despite its gameplay limitations. Very entertaining and original.

Tragic horror game where everyone involved is a victim. The camera angles, facial expressions, and lighting used to convey mood and invoke emotions throughout various scenes work perfectly. This really is a tragic game that the developers mention contain stories that they experienced or heard about. If you've watched many crime documentaries, you're likely to be familiar with several of the game's themes. I watched a play-through and wanted to give the developers their proper due with this purchase and review.

This game fills the gaps that have been missing in the horror genre, evoking that emotional response of "wtf just happened?" It features the dynamic of little kids, including one severely sociopathic and mentally disturbed child. Typically, we get the cliché murderer/stalker story or just gore and monsters, so it was refreshing to experience something more unique and relatable, focusing on messed up pranks and accidents among kids. MILD SPOILERS My only nitpick is the whole Agatha vs. Johan storyline, which leads to deciding whose story we are going to tell her father. It builds suspense, but then there's no option to choose the character you want to side with. It would have been nice to have different paths, such as the original: Agatha getting beaten by her father. But it would be even better to have something worse happen to Johan if we were able to pick Agatha's side. This could have led into a bigger, more harrowing difference in end stories, while also giving the player more of a choice.

A disturbing little horror snack that doesn't waste your time. As a piece of outsider horror art, I think it really accomplishes everything it intends to do. Great for enjoying a bit of spookiness before bed.
