This game has a worse reputation than its predecessors, but from playing it, I disagree with that sentiment. At 10+ hours in and being an RPG fan who enjoys turn-based combat, I'm having a great time. The game's combat system and difficulty are better thought-out and more balanced than the previous games. You can't use the same tactics for every fight. Spamming strong moves sets you up for enemy counters, and even regular enemies can have counterattacks and resistances that require strategy. You need to pay attention to enemy weaknesses and especially to their counters. Equipment also has seen an overhaul, along with increased complexity. There's an encumbrance system, so you have to consider how much weight each class can manage when equipping gear. Equipment has a larger array of stats, including a new stat which dictates how likely enemies are to target each character with attacks. A note for returning players: abilities that raise or lower stats were very strong in the previous games. Though percentage wise they seem weaker in Bravely Default 2, my experience is that buffs and debuffs are still quite strong. Defense doesn't work in a linear fashion. Decreasing enemy defense by 25% can lead to a much larger than 25% gain in damage. In some cases, I've seen my damage jump up to 4x after just a 25% defense drop to the target. Enemies also have hidden resistances, so pay close attention to what works and what doesn't. In short, the combat system makes you think and is more difficult than the average RPG, which is fitting given that the Bravely Default series is more niche and targeted at RPG fans more so than a general audience. Beyond the gameplay and combat, the music is phenomenal, especially the music that plays when you use a special move in combat. However, the story and characters are fairly standard. Though I'm not far enough into the game to get to the meta twists that I know are coming with this series, I am more than 10 hours in and, so far, there hasn't been anything out of the ordinary. That said, to be completely fair to its predecessors, the twists and interesting parts of their stories did not show up until halfway through or more, so there may be more to come with Bravely Default 2. But I'm a fan of games leading with their best foot rather than expecting players to invest a lot of time before the good parts. And the story, as of 10 hours in, is inoffensive but is nothing spectacular. One thing I will say for Bravely Default 2 is that it's more mature than its predecessors. Bravely Default and Bravely Second were often silly. The chibi aesthetic combined with the characters not taking things very seriously meant that those games never felt like they had high stakes. That isn't the case with 2. This game is more mature, and its characters take the story very seriously. When someone dies, it's significant, which is interesting given that there is thus far a lot less death in this game than there was in Bravely Second where the party mercilessly kills every villain in their path with little remorse, but doesn't take it very seriously and will be cracking jokes moments later. In brief, the characters in Bravely Default 2 act a lot more like real human beings would. Again, given the target audience, I feel that this was the right choice. If you enjoy turn-based combat systems and building teams, and you want to be along for the ride on a fantasy adventure with a great soundtrack, I recommend this game. If you're looking for a deep and compelling story, like Final Fantasy 10 or Expedition 33, this probably is not it.

This game is probably a 6.5/7 out of 10. The story is a typical JRPG and weaker than the others in this series. The job system on the other hand is the reason I kept playing. The fun part for me was figuring out what was broken without looking anything up. I did manage to find some very broken builds but the amazing thing was after I beat it I did go look some stuff up and man people are creative and found builds I didn't even think of. For that reason alone I give the game the score i gave it. So I recommend playing it if you like turn based games with great job systems but if you are looking for a great story I would not say this is the game for you. Hope this review helps at least one person.

Great game and a decent buy on sale If you wondering about buying this game. Ask yourself these 3 questions. Do I like grinding out battles to level up my character/classes? Do I like challenging bosses? Do I like a battle system that is not perfect but allows me to do what I want? If you answered no, to any of these questions. Walk away, this game was not meant for you. It is a fun game if you like any of these aspects but mostly the first question. You will be grinding out a lot of levels for your classes. Every time you get a new one it starts at Lvl 1. The fun part is mixing and matching abilities from different classes and you're allowed to make some game breaking combos. I wouldn't have bought this game at full price but on sale its been great so far.

edit: It has come to my attention that this game was not made by the same studio that did Bravely, Second, and Octopath, but by a studio that made a mobile game. No wonder it's so different. finished the game in Hard mode and quite a bit of grinding, trying to get all the cards of NPCs i find and do all the trials, etc., and am writing this right after beating the game Note that I played Bravely Default 1 and Bravely Second: End Layer. ---- Reasons I find the game meh: 1. The lighting is really weird. When I first booted the game I thought it looked terrible. Combined with the upped graphics, it just looked like odd clay dolls in an animation Youtube channel. Took me a while to get used to, but if you're used to how much more blended the first two games were, this will be a bit jarring 2. I don't mind grinding, it's part of Bravely, and it's fun. What I DON'T LIKE is taking off the ability to save Party Sets into Favourites. WHAT THE FUCK MAN? IT'S LITERALLY IN THE FIRST TWO GAMES, WHY REMOVE IT? Grinding in Bravely is actually kinda fun, but switching sets manually every time you want to go from a Grinding Mode to a Story Progression mode is NOT fun. 3. Not much challenge once you're in late game. There are these things called trials which you can optionally do in the late game, and they are brutally difficult at first. But once you start grinding some job levels, you end up gaining actual EXP as well, causing you to be overleveled fast, and nothing in the late game scales to that. You just destroy everything, and that's a bummer. Would've liked some challenges scaled to Lv99. 4. No settings option to control whether to receive EXP or not. Again, the first two games have this. WHY NOT THIS ONE???? Yes I hate the fact they're now items you gain in later chapters. 5. The main character's name is Seth. Can games stop fucking shoehorning "this is your self-insert, you can name them anything!" when we can't even change their appearance or gender? It ruins immersion when the game itself won't speak our character's name. Should've made it like BD1 and BSecond's Tiz and Yew. 6. There is literally no connection to the other two Bravely games. I expected some sort of thread tying the world back to Luxendarc, but no. This game can be called literally anything else and I wouldn't bat an eye. I know Square Enix likes to do this kind of shit where it's all different worlds, but I thought Bravely would be an exception. Oh well. ++++ Reasons to play the game: 1. Bravely Default had great music imo, but Bravely Second's was... okay. In particular, BSecond's character Ultimate theme songs were absolute horse radish, and none of them were memorable. Thankfully, BD2's character themes are much better, and I really liked the cute throwback one of the final songs gave. Then again, Bravely Second had an entirely different composer, so maybe having Revo back is why it's so good 2. It's a fun jrpg, I like the combat 3. It was pretty satisfying to complete 4. I liked the story ==== While my negatives are blown out of proportion, it doesn't stop the fact that the game's still pretty fun and I enjoyed it, go play it! but you'll be a bit disappointed if you liked the previous two Bravely games.
