This game falls into a kind of genre I like that I've come to call "Trapped Group". That alone is a big draw for me. I enjoy seeing how a cast of characters struggle between suspicion, self-interest, empathy, and teamwork. Buried Stars has some interesting potential deaths, enough uncertainty at points to keep it interesting. It explores questions of identity and perception while doing a great job of making social media frenzy part of the horror. I played it years ago and then liked it enough to come back to it to 100% the endings and collectibles. Even knowing the answers to mysteries, the atmosphere is enjoyable enough to spend time in again.
Amazing game, coming from someone who has an almost pathological obsession with murder mysteries. I came into this hoping to be entertained and intrigued, but it was so much more than your typical mystery VN. For one, the dynamics didn't fall into typical tropes. The characters actually had depth- you were endeared by them or annoyed, but they didn't feel like a walking stereotype that could be replicated anywhere. I especially loved the bond between Doyoon and Gyuhyuk, and how their story actually came full circle to the beginning. And one of the best parts is the replayability with Routes B and C. Instead of just a few changes, it's essentially a whole new storyline. It takes true passion and committed writers to craft something with this much heart. Had a blast playing it! Shoutout to Gyuhyuk for being the best and hot asf and for Doyoon for achieving the impossible which is to get me to actually love a main character in a visual novel instead of just barely tolerating them.
A rather solid VN. The gameplay is pretty meh, and the order of the optional dialogue can lead to a little wonkiness in the plot-required dialogue choices (e.g. character doesn't know something when they were just talking about it in an earlier optional dialogue scene). The choices can also be a little tough to differentiate, though I hear this is a translation issue. I recommend doing all the plot-required dialogue and then going through the ones you (as a player) find interesting... there's not much reason to 100% all of the optional dialogue IMO. It can get a little boring. Addl., the translation isn't unreadable but it doesn't flow well. It's just serviceable at best. The prose is sometimes clunky, the wording can be repetitive, the dialogue lacks character, and sometimes the translation switches the subject or perspective when it really shouldn't. If you can stand poorly translated webnovels/manhwa/etc. then you can stand this. It's just a disappointment that something so good is diluted by something so mediocre. That said, the gameplay and translation are easily the worst part of the game. The characters and plot are all well written, the KR voice acting is so emotive, and the themes are poignant and expanded on in a way that I'd never actually considered before. The start is a little slow, but the moment that-specific-plot-beat hits (you'll know it when you see it), the game really picks up. I'll say that the murder-mystery does drive the plot, but the cast being celebrities is what drives the themes, and it's good to keep that in mind while playing the game. It's more interested in solving "the truth behind the characters' personas" than it is in solving "the truth behind the murder," although the writers do a good job of tying them together rather neatly. Because of this, if you're unable to get behind the character writing, I don't think you'll enjoy it that much... I feel like this game is best played when you're willing to get wrapped up in the stories the writers have made up for the cast. Personally, I didn't find that very difficult, but YMMV. Another thing to keep in mind is that the names "B Route" and "C Route" are a bit of a misnomer. They're more like extra "what-ifs" than standalone routes. Don't expect catharsis along the lines of the A Route True Ending, and you'll have a good time with them. (The A Route True Ending is, of course, Peak.) Overall, I think this game is great! Solid characters, asks great questions, and very rarely pulls its punches. I'd recommend it, especially if it's on sale.
If you're wondering, if this one of these visual mystery novels where the characters start to suspect each other at some point, etc. etc. - Yes it is, and you're going to have to play it eventually. That said, the English text is an issue, and gets worse along the way, in part affecting gameplay. The controls are not perfect and can't be changed. And the skip button is not "smart" and does not tell you, when you are stumbling into new content. but these are minor issues. I got his on sale for 10 bucks, and it was well worth 20 and more.
I don't very often write reviews, but I felt compelled to write one after this game. I wish reviews began with a broader question than would you recommend this game? because I have very mixed feelings. For the most part, I enjoyed the game and there were bits of story that I found to be really engaging. It was fun to speculate what things being brought up may be relevant later. It was interesting to learn how to respond to specific characters (in the early game I lamented how many times I managed to pick the wrong choice for Seil from only 2 options!). The music and atmosphere could be good at times. There's quite a bit of voice acting - I couldn't tell you how much of that is full voice acted verses perhaps just saying a line in a character voice to give an impression of tone (like the Persona games or Danganronpa may do, as an example). The characters do have character and I liked the different character relationships to each other. I have a friend who is into the K-POP scene and has spoken to me about it before, I think that context helped me a lot - without, I may have found this harder to enjoy. So why am I torn? This game desperately needed another editing pass. I don't mean in the sense of mis-spellings etc, but things that are a result of the initial translation that I'm sure are not an issue in the original. Sometimes a male character becomes a she for a line. 3rd person v 1st person - I wondered at what point if this was supposed to be meaningful, than had a line that had both 3rd and 1st person in the same narration line. A reference that is clearly to a situation that happened to character A gets referred to as character B for a line (being vague here to prevent spoilers). Most of these are small and don't hinder much, but I found they felt quite concentrated at one point which was unfortunately along the true ending path. Other things matter more and are clearly matters of translation: A character makes an argument as to their whereabouts and when they met up with another. Later, that character "reiterates their story" (which is the intent: they tell the same thing), but it gets mistranslated the second time and refers to a different location and then you have to wonder which part is the mistranslation. There was another time where I thought I spotted a factual inaccuracy as the facts as the game explained them did not line up and this was just nothing, so again I assume it was translation. Some of the choice points seem functionally identical in the text you're given to make that decision - you can generally work out what it actually meant after picking that dialogue option. To be clear, I'm not saying this is every choice or every decision point, but translation shouldn't be creating these issues. Replayability to see alternate endings is hampered by the fact that this is a visual novel with a skip feature, but no feature to stop at new lines as far as I could find. So you either end up trawling through a lot of very familiar stuff with minor changes that you've just read, or you skip and probably miss out on new content and the nuances of what is different. I think this is really unfortunate as it feels no matter which way you choose, it's unsatisfactory in one way or another. So do I recommend this game? I do, with caveats. I think if you know what you're going into, you can find enough to enjoy this, and I hope people do.
