It's like someone watched a spaghetti Western, drank six espressos, and said, ‘Let’s make this into a game with parkour and Bible quotes.’ art at its finest.

Call of Juarez is a Western-themed first-person shooter that attempts to capture the grit, drama, and dusty thrill of classic frontier tales. Set in the American West, it follows two very different protagonists: Billy, a young outcast wrongly accused of murder, and Reverend Ray, a gunslinging preacher who sees himself as judge, jury, and executioner. The narrative switches between their perspectives, providing a contrast between stealth-based traversal and all-out shootouts. It’s a compelling idea, and at times, it works remarkably well. Visually, the game captures the Western aesthetic nicely—sun-bleached towns, rocky canyons, and golden plains are all here, rendered with a respectable level of detail for the time. The soundtrack also deserves credit for its atmospheric guitar riffs and harmonica cues that add to the tension and tone. The voice acting is solid for the most part, with Ray’s grizzled delivery standing out as a highlight. Gameplay-wise, there’s an interesting mix of styles depending on who you’re playing as. Ray’s levels often involve storming into towns, fanning revolvers and using biblical quotes as a kind of dark comedic flair. Billy’s missions are quieter, slower, and sometimes involve platforming, stealth, or puzzle-like exploration—though these sections tend to be more hit-or-miss in quality and pacing. The biggest issue—and the one that significantly brought down my enjoyment—is the save system. Call of Juarez relies on a combination of sparse checkpoints and an inconsistent auto-save mechanic that often fails to trigger at logical points. There were many moments where I’d progress through a difficult section, only to die and be thrown back much further than expected, forcing me to replay chunks of the level over and over. It got to the point where I felt compelled to quick-save constantly after every minor victory, just to avoid losing progress. This isn’t tension—it’s tedium. And for a game with trial-and-error stealth sections or combat set pieces that can quickly turn chaotic, poor saving structure becomes a real source of frustration. Combat can also feel a bit clunky. Gunplay lacks the weight and responsiveness seen in more polished shooters, and hit detection occasionally feels off. Some enemy AI patterns are questionable, with foes either being eagle-eyed snipers from across the map or clueless mannequins you can walk right past. The level design is decent but unremarkable, and Billy’s platforming segments are particularly awkward due to floaty movement and inconsistent ledge-grabbing. That being said, Call of Juarez has moments of genuine charm. When everything aligns—when Ray storms a saloon or Billy narrowly escapes a posse—the game nails the Western vibe. The dual-protagonist approach was ambitious for its time, and the story does a good job of weaving their fates together into a tense, character-driven plot. Verdict: 6.5/10 Call of Juarez is a game with vision, but one that’s held back by frustrating design decisions, especially the poor checkpoint system. For players with patience and a love for the Western genre, there's something here worth experiencing—but expect to manually save often and push through a few rough edges. It’s a flawed but occasionally entertaining ride through the Old West.

Call of Juarez tries many things to avoid being an ordinary western FPS and often fails in the process. The gameplay flow constantly changes from episode to episode. One moment, you're the badass Reverend Ray who believes he's the hand of God, and the next, you're just an ordinary kid named Bill. As Reverend Ray, you are always in a gunfight. You can dual-wield two revolvers alongside a shotgun or rifle if you want. The gunplay feels good and dynamic thanks to the physics engine. 80% of the objects can interact with bullets, so you can't hide behind cover forever. The body ragdolls feel satisfying when you kill enemies. Ray’s voice actor makes him feel so alive. It’s a very dramatic and theatrical performance, but it fits the character because Ray’s mental health is messed up. And as Bill, that’s where the game gets boring. You can use guns as Bill too, but most of the time, the game won’t let you. It forces you into stealth sections or different things like hunting rabbits, climbing a mountain, running from someone, or searching for something in lifeless places. And because of the clunkiness of the game, these sections feel boring. Stealth mechanics are just crouching and walking. You can’t knock out anyone to make the mission a little easier, and since enemies can spot you from a distance, you'll have to do everything again from the last save point or quicksave. I think Call of Juarez is a divisive and experimental game from Techland, even though it becomes boring and unbearable because of Bill’s episodes. If you are interested in the western theme, you should give it a chance.

That game was WAY ahead of it's time, and still holds up. Honestly this is closer to Half Life 2 than most people care to admit. + very good voice acting and writing + great, edgy story + 2 completely voiced protagonists + DX10 graphics still hold up with decent glass, water, dynamic shadows, ok textures and models + destructible covers + ability to shoot through some walls like thin wood + ability to pick up and stack objects + physics based puzzles + weapons wear out and break + a few variants for each weapon type + slow motion shootout mode + you can kick open weak doors + great bow and arrow combat (maybe a bit OP) + ability to pick up arrows you shot, take them out of enemy bodies etc. + 1 shot kills when hitting head or heart! + dual wielding pistols + weapon fire modes + whip that can be used for traversal and swinging over ledges + you can equip bible in one hand and the gun in another and read verses out loud while shooting fools in the head! There is certainly more, but how many games nowadays have even half of those systems in place? Not to mention in 2006 ... Cons : - Can freeze on occasion - There is a bit of jank here and there, but pros way outshine the faults This game really should be a cult classic!
