This game is simply incredible, from the themes of alchemy and existentialism, and some of the puzzles straight up reward you for understanding the basics of alchemy. the scary moments are effective and do not feel cheap and does not drag and the game does not use it as a crutch, which makes each moment of terror and tension feel unique, the game has been one hell of a ride for me, can't recommend it enough.
I'm surprised that I'm not seeing any discourse whatsoever about how Caput Mortum can be read as an allegory about AI. There's the hubris of men trying to make people, and those "people" making terrible imitations of art. There's the ouroboros imagery, which has its own relevant alchemical meanings but could also tie into AI's tendency to eat its own slop to generate more slop. I don't want to go too far with spoilers, but my point is that there is so much more here than spooky atmosphere and odd controls and it's surprising that other people don't seem to be talking about it. As you can infer from my playtime, I bounced off the gameplay and watched a walkthrough. This often happens to me with horror games. Cursed to be fascinated by the premises while put off by the gameplay. Please understand that this is a problem with me and not with the game.
A short yet extremely polished game with amazing atmosphere that not only looks like a classic horror game, but has a mechanic that ads to the classic feel by giving you separate control of your right hand for puzzles and monster encounters. For a short horror game Caput Mortum is one of the best in it's genre. Don't overlook this game.
