If Helldivers 2 and Left for Dead would've a baby, it would be CAST. Big open spaces to complete different objectives, decent amount of classes, weapons and upgrades to choose from (although there are some way more powerful classes / weapons than others). Gameplay is more about kiting and pushing your way to the objectives. There are some special enemies, but almost all of them are melee and can be easily outrunned. The only way to die mostly is when you complete objectives in a tight spaces where you can be overwhelmed. Every mission has main and side objectives. Side objectives are pretty straightforward, like to destroy towers, to place scans and so on. One thing that is more or less unique about objectives is the relic. When you pick up a relic, it applies immediately some negative effect on your team (may be hunting animal, who will track you down constantly, may be some global modificator debuff like darkness, radiation and so on). Although I think that on release, relics are pretty trivial. Before that, upon picking up a relic, relic bearer would be always hunted by a powerful creature which created tension and importance of this relic. Now, there are about 10 different relics, which are not really threatening at all, apart from the one invoking a stalking animal. So this thing is not as pressuring, as before. There are also modificators to the maps, like threats in Deep Rock Galactic or random modificators from Darktide, etc. For example, you can be debuffed with limited to 20m vision, constant radiation draining your HP, max health damage over time if you dont kill enemies, etc. It gives the game sense of kinda unpredictiveness. Overall, while gameplay loop (buy weapons / upgrades / perks -> go in raid to complete objectives and fight hordes of enemies -> return to try out new weapons / upgrades and perks) is satisfying, the game is clearly not finished. There are some cliffhangers about human faction which was never added, there is a huge town on the map which never gotten covered by current maps. The potential could be huge, but I suppose, sales were not that great. As for the negatives, map geometry sometimes is infuriating. Some maps (especially swamp) is just a cancer to complete objectives, cause it is easy to get stuck by the tree roots, a lot of narrow spaces can create easily a death trap for you and your teammates. Some maps are really hard to navigate and could use clearer markers or pathways or some organically placed visual tips for objectives (like caves and swamp). Although open-spaced maps are pleasure to play at. Also, the enemies are easily dodgeable which makes you mostly outrun the horde, lure it from the objectives and run back to complete it. Lack of significant enemies or mini-bosses who would pose real threat (especially ranged) is also an issue, cause hordes of enemies can be dodged easily, there is always a lot of room for positioning (except for tight spaces on some objectives or when you have Malignant Star as modificator preventing you from staying in light). It seems like the cultists were supposed to be in role of ranged support to the hordes but then again, they never came true in this game apart from side objective (airship). Also sound leveling is just not good. Some sounds are much louder than others, and, for example, if u hit multiple Ceramos Princes, you can just become def even on moderate volume cause of how loud his injury sound is. Overall very uneven sound effects, especially when the sounds from similar creatures layering onto each other creating unbearable volume. Happens not that often, but worth mentioning. Saying that, there are still some guys playing the game. Finding party in-game can be a little difficult, but in the evenings / on weekends more than possible. I would say, 20-30 hours is enough to see all content in the game and beating it at max difficulty solo. After that, there is not much to do. Good experimental game, but sadly unfinished. I hope to see some more stuff from Ascension Studio cause the title still looks promising and unique to me.

Warning: The devs announced in the game's Discord back in September that they currently have no plans to update the game. While I think there is some fun to be had (especially with friends) and has a great foundation to build, unfortunately that's all it seems it'll be for now. The game has some bugs, namely with map & collision issues. Really hoping they come back & give it some love.

Honestly one of the better games to come out recently. As other reviews have said its Helldivers 2 core gameplay (Drop into a large map with multiple objectives, 3 side objectives and 1 main objective, once the main is completed you can extract or stick around and do the side objectives if not already completed) with a different variety of monsters to face. Unique enemy ideas like these Root-zombie things that launch spike roots out of the ground and slow and damage you. Large difficulty scale. Today my lobby filled with 3 randoms and we just tore sh*t up and got all the way to difficulty 6 before I chose to hop off and do real life stuff. The graphic style of this game is awesome too, I love it. Community is very friendly so far. It's not completely perfect though don't get me wrong, There is limited maps but with the difficulty scaling each time entering feels different even if the maps are the same. For $7 though? Good luck beating this amount of fun Hoping for DLC, because I'll definitely purchase that as well. now time to get all my friends to spend $7 P.S. Due to my font my username shows up as "□□□□□□□" and if you ever see me online feel free to join! I don't care about lvl or experience playing, We can adjust difficulty to accommodate for everyone.

Helldiver's gameplay with PSX graphics. The only real downside is that there isn't a lot of content yet nor a big player base yet but IMO it's very worth it, especially for the price.
