Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate delves into a rich narrative tapestry, expanding upon the lore established in its predecessor, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The story is a complex tale of family, betrayal, and the cyclical nature of good versus evil. A Legacy of Vengeance: The game primarily follows the journeys of Simon Belmont, Alucard, and Trevor Belmont, all descendants of the legendary Belmont clan. Each character's storyline is interwoven, revealing their personal motivations and connections to the overarching conflict against Dracula. Simon Belmont's Quest: Simon's narrative arc is one of a young warrior seeking vengeance for the death of his mother at the hands of Dracula. His journey is marked by a growing understanding of his family's legacy and the immense power he wields. He grapples with the burden of his destiny, often finding himself manipulated by darker forces. Alucard's Burden: Alucard, Dracula's son, carries a heavy burden of his own. Torn between his father's darkness and his own desire for peace, Alucard acts as a mysterious protector, often intervening in the lives of the Belmonts. His story explores themes of self-acceptance and the struggle against one's own nature. Trevor Belmont's Role: Trevor, Simon's father, plays a crucial role in guiding Simon and confronting Dracula. His story is one of sacrifice and the enduring fight against the forces of darkness, even when faced with overwhelming odds.

if you can get past the character faces and sometimes animation being kinda uggo this is telling an absolutely wild and fascinating story. A story of what betrayal will do to men, to families, to their very souls. How easily losing sight of culpability becomes when there are people pulling strings in the background. It does a magnificent job of laying a foundation for complex character motivation and interaction and giving you plenty to mentally chew on once done. I have played it immediately following finishing Lords of Shadow 1 -- I'm not sure how much is addressed in 2. Gameplay-wise, it is quite linear, with few secret pathways and limited expansion of traversal options. There's a pretty clear reason for this -- MoF's priority is storytelling. Each ability and traversal tool has story-related reasons for being there (except the magnetic rail, I'd say). The final chapter makes and explicit point of this, because Trevor obtains all of Gabriel's original abilities in Lords of Shadow, and their clash at the end mirrors the same clash Gabriel had with Satan. It's taking great pains to emphasize that Trevor could never win the fight with Dracula at the end of Act 3, because while Trevor is now the Brotherhood's greatest fighter, Dracula was once the same, and now has even greater power than that. The environment also ties into this, as much of the castle's interior is directly recognisable from LoS, or links into MoF's efforts to build out Dracula's plans without explicitly stating his full intent. Personally I think this emphasis on diegetic gameplay and the ludonarrative experience is why it has engaged me more than other Metroidvanias I've played. Its cutscene pacing was enough to keep me wanting more but not too much to bog down my play experience. If you're seeking a more 'pure' Metroidvania experience this is probably not your bag, but if you've wish there was more storytelling in them, MoF does a fine job of it. In terms of its minute-to-minute gameplay, it improves on the level of interruption you'd encounter in LoS fights and makes skill progression linear via experience points. Your best abilities ARE indeed locked behind the highest level tiers, but overall the experience feels tighter, especially rolling from the absolute sh*tshow that was LoS's final DLC fight. Enemies are using unblockable attacks more frequently, with the ones you do block interrupting enemy combos and giving you a window of opportunity. You are transitioned from a pure block ability, to a healing dodge, to a healing attack throughout the course of the game, with the game trying to teach you how to dodge efficiently through this method. The game wants you to be using your sidearms and maintaining distance as much as possible, though there are times the game makes a frankly silly call and locks you into a tiny arena. Most of the time, this is during Alucard's route, and you are expected to be using Mist Form to give yourself manoeuvrability. It's not ideal, but the intention reads quite clearly. Enemies also block with a lot more frequency and the 2D play space this difficult to counter at times, but you do get tools to get past this (Tremor and Earthquake punch break blocks, not sure if they did that in LoS as well). The game's checkpoints are generous in Normal, so you can play without fear of failure, and going into a fight without full ammunition will not end your run (on Normal at least.) Health and Magic fonts are also paced reasonably well and readily accessible. For OG Castlevania fans this game may come across as 'sacrilege' in terms of its storytelling angle but, just go with it. It adds a fun (and tragic) spin on the characters, and keeps our dearest Dracula in the forefront of our minds. We know why he's there, and why he must be stopped. (BUT, tbf, TBF, UNDERSTANDABLE CRASHOUT. Like reasonable no but absolutely understandable after having the Worst Week of Existence Ever and then the organisation that conspired to turn you into the monster you are now sends your secret kid into a fight THEY KNEW HE'D LOSE. )

if you are not castlevania fan or you don't like QTE games don't buy & play this game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD is a bold experiment that mostly succeeds. It doesn't reach the heights of Symphony of the Night or the tight action of Aria of Sorrow, but it offers something different: a character-driven saga with modern combat mechanics in a classic 2D framework. For fans of the franchise, especially those invested in the Lords of Shadow continuity, this entry is well worth experiencing—warts and all.

An old school style game which brings the nostlagic feeling regarding previous games released from this franchise. Improved with some current resources like the QTE and HD graphics. Plus, unveil a new and, until then, untold chapter of Belmont's family. Chronologically this game takes place between Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 1 and 2.
