Competent little game. Good art direction, tight but flowy controls, poignant metaphor. Would have preferred if it didn't reveal it's hand right at the beginning, my favourite thing about metroidvanias is unraveling the world. Also would have preferred if every ability was mandatory for progression. Accidentally beat the game without two abilities.
Constance is a metroidvania that I found a few high points along the way, but felt shallow at many other points. It's a good game, just one that's held back from being great. I really appreciated the messaging of Constance, the story is about a struggling artist whose mental health is declining, and she gets thrown into another world that manifests a lot of her struggles and fears. There are some flashbacks shown through simplistic mini-games that I felt captured feelings of anxiety and self-doubt really well, while these were short glimpses into Constance's life they were heavy hitting. The gameplay centers around the usage of a paintbrush for attacking and traversal. There's an interesting mechanic where if her attacks or moves are spammed it puts her in a vulnerable state that will damage her if she continues to use those moves, meaning that thought has to be put into approaching combat and movement. However I felt the game was shallow in terms of exploration, I never felt compelled to explore the entire map or even do any of the side quests. A part of why is that the game was on the easier side in terms of metroidvanias; still punishing, but I progressed through the entire game with minimal upgrades. The map was pretty barebones and was hard to get a sense of where I should be going next. A picture mechanic was included to save points of interest but backtracking rarely felt worth it to me, I never felt underprepared for a fight. I still enjoyed Constance of course, there were a few boss battles I genuinely enjoyed, and the last few parkour sections that demand using multiple different abilities at a time made me feel like I had a mastery over the game, but I still just can't help but feel that this game could've been a lot more.
Yes, I finished the game and had a lot of fun doing it. I would recommend. Pros: worth 20 dollars Amazing art Amazing story Fun combat Unique boss designs and fights No bugs or game breaking problems i came across No annoying runbacks The game soundtrack is amazing Cons: Getting upgrades to your character aka extra health and extra paint usage feels optional. The movement or upgrades feel really region specific. I used the clone ability 2 times the entire playthrough. the wall jump ability does not work on almost any of the normal areas besides the place you get it. all of the bosses are really easy. the most i ever died to a boss is 6 times and it was on the joker card fella. once you memorize every attack its just a cakewalk. there is no good way to traverse the map. yes there is the fast travel but sometimes you need to go someplace to do a quest and it takes forever to get there. overall I feel like the map is good, but needs work. characters have not much dialogue, I liked some of the characters but they felt dead when reading the text. they don't really have an identity behind the design or the sounds they make when they talk. Overall the game is totally worth the 20 dollars, just some small problems that I found. I wish there were some changes to the map and the characters but other then that amazing game. Would definitely play again for fun.
I initially left a bad review, but it was rife with frustration. Ultimately, this is a very good game. However, in order to get some of the best powerups, it has an insanely frustrating gacha game as a side quest, and you must spend far FAR too much currency on this gacha game to get the rewards. A great many things in this game are frustrating like that, but overall, the game is very fun to play and incredibly insightful in its story.
