This is an amazing concept, but may be overly ambitious. I'm going to recommend it; but with caveats. Ever watch the army/Umbrella Corp lose in a zombie movie and think "I could do better!" Here is your chance. Command the government/evil corporation's response to an outbreak. Evac, sterilise, patrol. Set up forward bases, perimeters. Helo sniper teams onto rooftops. Fire SAWs from the skids of a Little Bird. Cleanse with fire. Recover data from infected. Call in not-so-surgical airstrikes. It's obviously a labour of love, and the opposite of generic EA/Ubi shovelware. It's also the opposite of smooth and polished. If you ask "I saw x in a zombie movie, can I do this in Cepheus Protocol?" the answer is probably "yes." Resident Evil juggernaut vs LAV? Infected crows? Zombie sandworms? Yup. The ambition and effort is also its shortfall. The game is not sure what it is trying to be; a small scale squad game like Jagged Alliance where you control a small team or a large scale RTS with more units than Company of Heroes? It does neither well. The endgame (clearing out infected nests) is a bit of a repetitious chore and is what deters me from more playthroughs. Like Men At War Assault squad it struggles with micro; while it is very cool IDEA to play in FPS mode, turning on and off individual flashlights and tracking individual ammo seems a bit excessive if you are managing 80 units including helos and vehicles as well as multiple bases. It's trying to do too much; it should be either a more streamlined large-scale tower defence RTS managing resources and evac routes; or a more small scale squad/semi FPS/RPG, but in trying to do everything it is a janky micromanagement mess. If it was two separate, more focussed, polished games, I'd buy both. Cepheus Protocol is a glorious, well intentioned mess, but a mess. I recommend, but buy with reasonable expectations. Before anyone says: bUt EaRly aCcEsS! may I point out it's been in early access since 2020. That's 5 years of charging cash for a product.

Old negative review: "No updates for months now. It was a very promising game but seems to have been abandoned by devs." Sorry guys, i posted my review after checking the experimental branch page of the game where no news showed in the last months. I have seen all the updates from the previous weeks. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for taking the time to answer my review.

Im giving this a thumbs up because the devs are trying and they have communicated as well as they can but this game - 4.5 years in dev - is not in a good state. 2.5 years ago, as others have said, it was more fun. Its not that any of the ideas are bad. Its how many ideas they have and the layers of jank after each idea is implemented. And, now, nothing is done well. Coffee Stain went to UE5 1.5 years ago for Satisfactory and I was pretty worried it would mess up their game. And it did take them a LONG time to solve those issues. The guys here werent that lucky. The UE5 port appears to have just murdered this thing OR its the nail in the coffin on top of the layers of ideas, jank, bugs and also now, performance. Its a pity, this was a nice game 2 years ago and I have to agree its gone backwards. I have not enjoyed the replay - it was difficult - controls and ui are key there. Its too fast AND too slow and the game rhythm, APM and loop are not what they were. THumbs up for effort - this was really great. Hope you guys can get your mojo back.

The game is fun. It feels like playing Prototype as an RTS, and you're on the side of the squishy humans. Also, the people complaining about the "DLC" are crazy. It's literally an art book, a novella, a comic, and some two dollar skin packs that are explicitly for people who want to offer more money to support development. None of that is taking resources away from development to get money.

A janky ass game that's still got a long way to go, but I love it. The devs are very open and willing to listen to feedback, the game is very fun to play especially building up a massive fortress and saving civilians, fighting zombies, etc. But most of all, the game lets me live out my childhood dream of a game where you play as the military and fight zombies and save humanity. Somehow, very few games have attempted this.
