Game Dev Tycoon on steroids. If you liked that game you'll probably love this. If you've never played GDT, this game has a very similar gameplay loop: Progress from the 1970's to the 2020's and beyond as a video game company by developing and/or publishing games, with an emphasis on choosing the appropriate combinations of genre, theme, platform, and age rating. During each period of game development you adjust sliders for how much work you want your employees to put into different gameplay aspects. For example you're going to want to have a much higher percentage go towards the story in an RPG than a puzzle game. Your game devs will contribute points towards the game's development during each phase, and the final number of points is the biggest factor in determining the game's final score on a 0-100 scale (which can actually be broken if the game is good enough). As you develop games and perform post-mortems on them you'll slowly hone in on the perfect percentage number for each slider relative to each genre, which in turn increases the overall quality rating of the game, which in turn obviously influences overall profits and popularity. You'll also need to make sure that your genre/theme combination makes sense, and that the platform/console you choose is popular for that genre (e.g. casual games will sell much better on a GameBoy than a Linux PC and vice versa with sim games). Of course, all of this is subjective, and while in real life a talented game dev/studio can theoretically combine any genre and theme to make a good game, CGS is limited in that regard. Then again it's a video game, and the challenge of choosing the right combinations of everything is kind of the point. One thing that I'm not totally a big fan of is the utilization of game engine features. With every engine there are features that you can choose to use or not use, with each feature costing a certain number of points in at least one of two categories (computing and graphics). Each platform has a certain respective point limit for these two categories, so you're likely not going to use all the features in a particular engine by the mid-game. That's because these features cover virtually every aspect of a video game you can think of: stuff like 2D or 3D graphics (and how many bits), controller support, animations, dialog, save formats, etc., and eventually there's just *a lot* of them to choose from. That's actually not a huge deal (more is good with stuff like this), my issue is that using one particular feature over another doesn't really matter. Eventually it just comes down to maximizing the number of computing and graphics points that the console will allow, since only that affects the final rating. It'd be nice if, say, my RPG game got a little boost if I decided to include better dialog instead of better animations, kind of like the priority sliders mechanic. In the game's current state it basically just makes all those features flavor text and numbers to be added together, which is a bit of a bummer. In addition to publishing your own games there are other ways to make money and grow, including creating your own game engines, taking freelance contract/publishing deals, and even building your own game console. The game takes place in a city (surprise) where you can rent, buy, or build studio spaces (and later your own game dev universities and convention buildings). You can have many different studios going at once as you want, and automate them as much or as little as you prefer. An automated studio can be only for porting and/or updating old games, collaborating with other studios on works in progress, or even creating their own games from scratch going by guidelines (if any) that you set for studio directors. In addition to hiring game devs you can hire producers, accountants, HR, marketing, studio directors, and network admins who influence profits, efficiency, happiness, and/or popularity. You furnish your studios yourself (a welcome improvement over Game Dev Tycoon's static studios), and you can either plop down office items and decorations yourself or let the game auto-decorate for you. I'm not a huge fan of the auto-decorating because it seems to waste space and sometimes the overall layout looks wonky, but it's there if you want it. I really wish there were more options as far as decorations. There's no color customization for items, so for example if you want a couch it's either black, white, or red. There's also just not a lot of items in general, so studios tend to start looking kinda samey unless you change up the walls/floors. Each object affects a studio's happiness and/or productivity ratings, but some of the balancing is weird. For instance, upgrading an employee's desk increases productivity, but for some reason also decreases their happiness. That just doesn't make any sense to me except trying to keep the game balanced at the cost of realism. I do however really appreciate the fact that adding an office printer decreases happiness. That part is EXTREMELY realistic. This game is also in desperate need of some kind of copy-paste feature, because plopping down sometimes 120+ desks into one gigantic studio can be extremely tedious. There is a sort of layout-saving feature that can be transferred from studio to studio within the same save file, but if your studios are different sizes it can lead to some problems. I think my favorite thing about this game is the continual, thorough support by the devs. (EDIT: I just found out that Binogure is a one-person studio!) This game's been out for over four years now and there are still regular updates that improve gameplay mechanics and introduce new ones. Binogure is also extremely active on social media and welcomely responsive to players. For example, there was an update yesterday that caused a weird bug in my new game today. I made a thread about it on the forums here and less than an hour later not only had he responded to my post but also found the bug and fixed it. Again, in less than an hour. That's really amazing and such a nice departure from most studios these days. Reading Binogure's responses to negative reviews are such a breath of fresh air. They are thoughtful, humble, and remarkably considerate. He never takes criticism personally and always uses it constructively to improve the game. I got this game on sale but it is absolutely worth the 20 bucks if you enjoy this genre of games. Keep up the good work, Binogure!

I see everyone loving it, and while i see some features that i like in these kind of games, and can tell the game is polished. Just doesn't hit for me. Its not complicated enough and i feel like im just clicking and adding stuff without changing much, and that the more teams i make just the better it'll get. Most likely i haven't explore the game fully yet. But after some hours i got a little bored and couldn't think of a very exciting continuation of the game. It has a lot of features, but somethings just didn't clicked enough for me. I come from playing software inc, and that game is just Too good to be compared i guess, and even if this game scratches some of the features, i just don't feel enough the strugle a developer has, and feel more like click to success. It can use some of your brain, and there things to design etc. But unfortunately i didn't get that amazing feeling other people felt with this game, i even like mad games tycoon a little more. Maybe, i have to just give it one other shot at some point. But i really just made a fortune on my first games, bought many offices and populated them, then i started not doing very good and lost interest. I tried to think again and again, what is that i didn't like really, because im a mad fan of these games. And im not really sure. I think i want more focus on the building, and more guidance on how to build nicely and what is needed for an office. Enchance the feeling that you building your company, because really at the early game, i felt nothing, i purchased empoyees like they were slaves :p ~Edit~ Completed the game twice on harder difficulty. Look the game is very nice with a lot of polish and the features are there. Its fast though if you know what you doing, killing the replayability a little, i can see my self wanna play it again. But the Director, needs to be expanded a little to be able to handle some more stuff but also maybe the whole game should slow down a little. it advances a little bit fast, and you as well are able to just imporve constantly, i think it should take some more time between the years and the AI should be a little bit more competitive. Then i loved the whole interface the UI the whole game, but falls short on some stuff. If the difficulty and time for tasks adjust a little, and with some expansion on the details and statistics we can see on the AI teams and the actions we can take with them. This game might be a very solid game. So far, i found it a bit easy and quick, not a lot to do with the companies you buy really and even though they managed to launch a better game than me, i bought them and they had 5 developers? So the AI doesn't really represent their success and stock i suppose. If the simulation was a little bit more real and we could see and work on these statistics, and had a little bit more time between seasons. I give it 9.5/10. Currently, 7/10. Its good better than some others ;)

In my opinion, City Game Studio is a slightly better Game Dev Tycoon, but it also has it's own set of issues. I find the studio competitor gameplay mechanic to become tedious and it falls flat, and your studios eventually balloon to unmanageable size where it just isn't fun to play anymore. That is main problem for me, as your playthrough gets pretty boring after a few hours. The campaigns are also much longer than Game Dev Tycoon, which I would have liked, if it wasn't for this issue. On the positive, every other gameplay mechanic ripped from Game Dev is here, but expanded upon, and it does feel much less RNG. That being said, with mods, Game Dev Tycoon still comes out on top for me. However, if you're looking for a purely vanilla experience, pick up City Game Studio instead.

I have never seen a game developer more dedicated to his game than this one. Throwing out updates week after week, still improving the game which was released 4 years ago. Kudos, Xavier!

Great and updated alternative to Game Dev Tycoon. My only problem with this game is how outdated the UI looks and feels.
