FOR CONTEXT: I'm a mid-40s dad who has precious little time and has never 100% a game. Very casual, but very experienced. Take that for what you will. I wasn't sold on this initially... I like city builders and roguelikes, but what I like about them are kind of at odds. I like the slow deliberate creativity of a city builder, and the quick progression and challenge of a roguelike. So... Combolands seemed weird. But for $8 during the Autumn Sale? I've wasted a lot more money on much longer bets. And yeah, I'm happy. This has the roguelike's steep(ish) learning curve, but the game eschews an overly detailed tutorial in favor of a 'it's a roguelike, failing is the point' approach, which I liked. Though it should be noted I won the first playthrough without much issue, and immediately unlocked the next faction. It was the SECOND (and third) playthroughs that I failed spectacularly. But it has that satisfying level of crunch- I figured out better combos, how to read the maps, etc. I'm now getting to better understand why you'd play factions and how they interact. On the city builder side... it doesn't really scratch that itch a whole lot. It's about 80% rogue and 20% city. But the 20% are the right pieces. There's no timer, so you can plot and consider the choices. There's interesting layers to this with factions and how they interact... you pick 2 of them per run, and that gives you more than enough depth to be satisfying. The building placements matter a lot, and the theming makes sense, which makes it fun to try. The developers had to draw a line somewhere, and I think they made the right call. This feels spiritually a bit like when someone makes a 'faster paced' 4x. It's extremely difficult to make them quicker without sacrificing what makes them worth it. Combolands threads the needle as well as it can be. If I'd paid $15 I still would consider it a fair price. For $8 I'm thrilled. (Also, if you're looking for a 'faster' 4x, the board game Last Light does it the best I've seen)
Almost bounced off with a refund with the first couple hours of the game being a bit frustrating/dull due to the pace of unlocks Really glad I didn't. After Unlocking a few Guilds an especially the store, it opens up immensely and is one of the best games I've played this year. Devs: The store unlock at the beginning is a big miss of a decision that makes the early runs feel like a chore. Definitely worth rethinking.
It's easy. Really easy. Even the highest difficulty provides almost no challenge if you have even the barest understanding of how to 'break' the buildings (*cough* ghost/wild paints *cough*). Most of the content comes from the sheer amount of combinations of guilds requiring needing to do a ton of runs just to complete them all, but most of the end gameplay does kinda get samey. Despite this, the rest of the game is very cleverly thought out and well designed. While some guilds are better or worse than others, most of them typically require the help of the other guilds to complement their synergy pieces and most combinations end up creating unique and interesting mixtures of buildings. The guilds blending so well together really drives a lot of the replayability and keeps you wondering if two 'seemingly incredibly discordant' factions actually have some sort of insane secret combo you hadn't thought of. my only wish is that there would be like, 10 more challenge tiers or something.
