After 2 runs, I debated for a while whether I'd give this one a positive or a negative review. However, I decided that there's enough unique aspects to give it a tentative recommendation, even if it's far from the best in the genre. The Slay the Spire structure is there: go through three acts, building up your deck and other resources. There's 4 characters, though the card pool is shallower than in Slay the Spire. I don't just mean a lower card quantity: there are some cards that are just "better" than others. For example: one card gives two block, but blows up if held at the end of the turn. Another does the same, but doesn't blow up and can reflect damage back: and it's not even a rare! Events and relics face similar balance issues: one event in Act 2 essentially won me the run then and there. The theming is nice, but the poor translation and the clashing graphics do it no favors. But the "saving grace" of sorts that gives the game an identity beyond a STS bootleg is the "snowball" aspect of the game's design. At least in the early difficulties, you get absolutely bombarded with relics, card rewards. and other buffs. These can have some crazy buffs on their own, and the quantity at which you get them makes it quite satisfying when a run comes together. In conclusion, consider getting this one on sale if you really like the theming and the idea of an earlier deckbuilder.
Only 5 hours in, but it's really nice to see new devs morphing the original Slay the Spire formula and making great and unique adaptations to its core gameplay. Three Kingdoms is genuinely fun and implements several new mechanics that work well. The user interface makes the game easy to understand. Definitely a hidden gem in the ever expanding card battler ecosystem. A noticeable piece that needs some love is the English translation, where a few cards have some broken English, but they are still quite understandable, especially after you've actually played a few runs.
One of the best card battlers I've played. Clearly inspired by Slay the Spire; does a few things worse, but most of it is better than the inspiration, and that's very high praise. The card collection could be bigger, but also, it is sufficient for distinct builds for each character, all of them perfectly viable (a difficult balance to reach). And that's another thing. The characters feel so different to one another in a way very few games manage. Getting a "badass" skin for each after you beat half the game with them is a nice objective to chase at the beginning. The game is RNG heavy at first, but then, it depends on you to make coherent choices to make the best out of what is presented to you. If you lose past boss 2, that's on you. It feels fair. Enemy variety is there; the random enchantments they can get definitely spice up encounters, and getting warned on the boss of the chapter so you can adjust your deck accordingly is a good inheritance from Slay the Spire. Two things I don't like, that's it: some relics are way too powerful and warp the game around them. The bow that gives +4 Agility each time an arrow is spend is so much further behind anything else that they don't seem from the same game. And also, I'd appreciate a way to skip the animation every time you're given the choice to buff your enemies for money at the start of each chapter. Glowing review otherwise. Cheap, meaty game.
