When I first completed this game after about 12 hours, I discovered that the "true ending" required a second playthrough. I was disappointed because while I really enjoyed the game, I didn't think I wanted to play it all again, so I just watched the ending on youtube and went to bed. And I could not stop thinking about this damn game. Long story short, 50 hours later (I occasionally left it running while paused) I have played it through I think 7 times and gotten all of the achievements, which I very rarely do. In fact I so rarely get invested enough to dedicate the time to mastering games that I've only done it one other time, which was Amnesia the Bunker, amusingly a similar game in many ways (damn rats!). Mastering both of these games is something I'm quite proud of. I'm not going to pretend this game is perfect, and I recommend you read some other reviews if it's important to you to have plenty of details before you buy or not, just keep in mind that the dev put out a couple big patches after release that helped with most of the significant complaints. Though I'd argue the 94% positive rating speaks for itself. I personally think the first chapter is a poor introduction to what the majority of the game actually is, so just stick with it until chapter 2 and see how you like it from there. The combat gameplay especially is much more fun in the middle and end of the playthrough. I've bought both the cosmetic pack and the soundtrack (and also wrote my first real review lol) because I would love to see the game be expanded and I want to support the dev (that's right, (mostly) just one developer!) because he's done something great, imho. PS: If you are also a huge WW1 buff the historical themeing of this game is obviously cool and the environment and story are very authentic in their own pixellated way lol.

This game was carried by its style, not its gameplay. Would've benefited from less time spent running around due to maze like levels, item running due to restricted inventory space and having enemies die from fewer hits but be otherwise more dangerous. Once you progress opening up new paths in the levels, gain more inventory space and upgrade your guns to require less kiting in battles, things improve, atmosphere shines through and the game is at its best. I don't get why "inventory management" is so romanticized in these games. I've never heard anyone say "Silent Hill would've been so much better with restricted inventory". You can withdraw from almost any situation, so any poor choices of what to carry it will only result in backtracking time, which there is already so much of. It doesn't create impactful choices, only chores. Being able to infinitely reset each encounter by running out of the room and back in nearly kills all of the tension. Gripping and atmospheric to the bitter end despite its shortcomings.

Scratches both the WW1 and old school survival horror itches! Im actually stunned that a first time developer made this, whatever you were doing before Jordan, ignore that and focus on game development. This is your calling Elements that make it stand out from other attempts in the SH genre are things such as its level design and balancing. Both are pretty much spot on, aside from one or two long moments, I felt like it had been meticulously thought out and therefore was worth my time (Which is the biggest commodity these days). Take some of the later SIlent Hill or Resi games and they lost their way on this so its very refreshing to be able to see it again. One other really niche point I liked was that you still interacted with other french soldiers throughout the game, rather than being all by yourself during the "aftermath" of the event like in Resi 2. Also being a fellow WW1 nerd I appreciated all the factual touches and locations. Fort Vaux gave me Battlefield 1 flashbacks so was nice to see! In a nutshell; Positives: Superb atmosphere Faithful WW1 setting Great resource balancing Art design Creepy soundtrack Great well thought out level design Very functional combat Excellent pacing Some excellent well used emotional hooks with the photographs on the soldiers Good difficulty management, doesnt do unnecessary spikes or leave you in the cold if you missed an item earlier Negatives; Slightly too long (Seems to want to end and then goes on for another level) Rats (Already discussed, too fast and dont die that easily so are more grief than the soliders) Some long winded backtracking in later chapters (Essentially having to go the LONG way around for something got a bit tedious at times, a few more shortcuts would of been appreciated) Outdoor level design. It wasn't particularly clear what elements of the countryside I could walk around and what I couldnt so spent a lot of time getting stuck or caught by the rats on a puddle that was similar to one I walked over earlier Performance was largely excellent, aside from a hard crash when repairing an item when your inventory was full and some frame drops in the last few scenes, also this random issue where the game window didnt quite fill the screen properly when first loaded (Resolved when going to a new room or loading a save) Suggestions; No map indicator if there are items left inside a room (This was a later edition to the resi remakes but I always felt like it was an improvement to know whether you had cleared a room or not) Blocked routes not being largely shown on the map. Would of been nice for that blocked marker to appear on areas that were now or temporarily blocked, this appeared sometimes but not all so would of helped with route management Thanks very much Jordan, I look forward to Conscript 2!

I was highly anticipating Conscript and it didnt disappoint. This is a hardcore, harrowing and relentlessly bleak game set in the absolute meat grinder of Verdun, where classic survival horror game tropes get masterfully assimilated into a historical setting. By far the most unique aspect of the game is the total lack of supernatural elements, nearly everything you see in this game has this amazing air of plausibility and authenticity that really amps up the grim atmosphere that hangs around every minute of the game. While the game has some welcoming options assisting players who are not as valiant, the game absolutely shines when saves are limited, every injury hurts, and you're resource starved. This makes the stop and pop shooting, the very risky but punchy melee, and those goddamn rats to be as undesirable as possible. Maybe I'm just a masochist, but I really enjoyed how brutal and clunky the combat was, even if I can understand someone being very turned off by how slow and difficult it is. That all said, I have two grievances - the rats can be a bit too punishing (there will be a small nerf soon) and I find the amazing visual style can at times hide essential paths needed to progress due to the murkiness, which got me lost a few times. However, if the idea of surviving the trench warfare sounds interesting to you, or you just want a great game to play, pick this one up right now. Few horror titles have been as unique and engrossing as this one in recent memory.
