a gold star for you simply for considering playing this game crymachina is a little bit of a weird action rpg / visual novel hybrid. not terribly long on either count, but a drastic step up from crystar (which i will reference several times, don't really have much of a choice!) so what exactly is crymachina? the loop of the game is : relatively short action stage, story event, discussions at base. by all account, the story is rather short and not terribly verbose - it says what it wants to say and gets to it rather quick. the themes are much like crystar (family, humanity and love and what those mean), but the biggest difference is the gameplay. unlike crystar, crymachina does not waste your time with endless, absolutely mindless dungeon crawling, and that allows the game to shine. which also lets every other aspect of the game shine. great performances from the VAs also help elevate the whole package. the combat isn't on par with more "modern" combo games, but between the few moves you can pull off, it felt fun to me, and is not a button masher. if anything, button mashing will get you killed really quickly - the action stages are short and the focus is on bosses, and messing up on attacks means that half your health will simply disappear. to counter that, if you stay relatively on par with the level requirement and get a bit of gear, you will do equal damage and blast though the opposition. i was able to grind what i needed to beat the game within the 16 hours (with a bit of idling) it took me to beat this. it's relatively forgiving, which once again eased the burden compared to the ridiculous requirements crystar asked of you to beat the game. i fully expect the type of person to pick up this game to enjoy it, but it isn't going to convert people who only play AAA offerings. it's much better than crystar on the enjoyment front, thank god. if you crave more of the game, there's even a bit of post conclusion things to do! at the end of the day, this is a furyu game, which means ambition and passion meet lower budget so a more restrained game. i do think the price is a bit daunting for the average person (i picked it up on sale myself) but i had a fantastic time with this game and might come back to it eventually for the extra things i have not done. another gold star for you for reading this!

Great game but get it on sale Gold star for the story. While the way the story was told leaves a lot to be desired (not much body or facial animation or set piece), the writing, setting and characters make up for the subpar story telling. Unless you do the side content your getting around 12 hours of content and I don't think that is worth the asking price so wait for a sale. If you are getting this game for the combat I don't recommend, get the game only if the story looks interesting to you Pros [*]Story [*]Artwork [*]Voice acting (whole game is voiced and the voice actors did a great job, really elevated those emotional moment) Cons The big con is the whole combat and progression related to it. Story moments happen in independent stages, each stage being any where from 1- 3 enemy encounters and around 1-3 min of walking. I personally found the stages and combat to be repetitive and lacked anything exciting. There are also side stages, all stages give you exp which you have to allocate to each character. If you ignore all the side content you will be around 15lvls under the final boss so I recommend you play on story difficulty if you don't want to do the side content.

Visual Novel with a gameplay segment, I don't recommend this if you want action JRPG. But if you like Yuri in Sci-Fi setting, this might scratch that itch. Interesting story with amazing visuals and good soundtrack. Treat it like VN instead of an action game.

I give this game a 7/10. It is more of a visual novel than an action game. When skipping all cutscenes you can complete the story in less than 3h (16h if including all cutscenes). The game consist of 26 levels which are all very similar: You get one or two rooms full of trash, followed by a boss. Each level takes about 5 minutes to complete. The story is presented in sections of 3 levels, each ending with a major story boss. After the story is complete there is plenty of side content and challenge content to explore. In fact there are around 1400 optional dungeons available. The game seemed pretty challenging and souls-like at first, but after three bosses the difficulty dropped to virtually zero. With sufficient skills and equipment most bosses can be beat by just mashing the X button.

I really love the game. The art is great, and has a sci-fi vibe with mythological inspirations. The story and lore is right up my alley. It's definitely worth a try if you like IP's such as Tokyo Ghoul, Evangelion, and 9 sols. There is also a lot of sci-fi themes such as Fermi Paradox, Laws of Robotics, warfare, and can machines have feelings. There are also things in the game that allows for pretty good replay value.
