Okay, so I just finished playing Crypt Custodian and wow, what a treat! First off, the art style is absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, it's like a playable painting. The gameplay is just as amazing, super smooth and satisfying. Honestly, I found myself just enjoying the simple act of playing. The story is there, and it's interesting, but honestly, the real star is the gameplay loop. Even on the harder difficulty, it's surprisingly chill. There's no real pressure, just pure, relaxing fun. If you want a game that looks incredible and is just a joy to play, Crypt Custodian is it!

I really, really appreciate the idea of casual metroidvanias, and I think Crypt Custodian is even more charming than Death's Door. It's not hard, but not trivial either, has a lot of secrets and unlocks, and making ten friends among dead animals is a very worthy quest. Some gimmicks feel a bit less inspired than others (the rafts are only used in one location, and in an uninteresting way), but overall it plays really well.

This is the first game I've played where I made extensive use of the "assist" options, and though I had mixed feelings about it at first, I'm glad I did. I really liked the atmosphere and exploration in Crypt Custodian, which to me are the best parts of a Metroidvania. On the other hand, I have a rather low frustration tolerance for pattern-memorization and bullet-hell-type dodging, so when I got to the first boss, I wasn't sure I was going to keep playing. But I still wanted to explore, so I switched to easy difficulty and gave myself extra life, and eventually beat the boss, even though it still took a few tries. After that I switched back to normal difficulty and life, and just turned off fall damage. I kept up that pattern for most of the bosses, though I did manage to beat a couple on "regular" settings. And then something odd happened. I tried Boss Rush mode on "Easy," and found that the first boss wasn't as difficult as I remembered. After several tries, I managed to beat it without taking damage. "Huh. I bet I could do that faster." And I did, until I was fast enough to get S+ ranking. So I went up to "Normal." And then "Hard." And pretty soon the boss that I had so much trouble with the first time around was completely trivial. Which I certainly would not have anticipated going in. I guess what I'm trying to say is, "Thank you to the developer for making a game accessible on my terms. In doing so, you also made me reconsider my own capabilities and what types of games I might enjoy." ANYway. If you're still reading this, thanks, and buy Crypt Custodian already. It's well worth it.

Each game by this dev feels better than the last, while still retaining a lot of the same feel and vibes. Like Islets, this game is very smooth to play and explore. There's paths branching out in every direction and it was pure dopamine uncovering every last room and collectable. If you're struggling, there's a shop where you can pay to reveal a missing item or important location to visit. It is very easy to 100% the game because of this. I got stuck on one puzzle and one cryptic bit at the end though, which I had to look up, but otherwise I was able to figure everything out pretty easily. The only QoL issue I ran into was that scrolling around on the map screen was too slow. The pet owner in me loved the cutesy pet-centric storytelling, it was wholesome and at times sad. The plot had me wondering what was really going on too. I wasn't fond of the composers work on the previous games but he's finally won me over with this title, with plenty of chill tunes that stuck in my head. I'd recommend this to all fans of metroidvanias & Zelda-likes, it's one of the best games to come out this year for me.

Crypt Custodian is the perfect cozy game while still leaving room for challenge. While other metroidvanias try to implement ways to make convenient features work through charm systems Crypt Custodian opts to not waste your time with needless grinding or equipping of such features. I love that I can fast travel from the start by opening my map from ANYWHERE and selecting a fast travel point and POOF I am there. I feel like my time is being respected. I've defeated two Major bosses, saved a couple cats and made friends along the way. The humor is refreshing and the world is mysterious. I can't wait to discover what lies beyond what I've already uncovered!
