Absolutely superb game. I discovered Kyle Thompson's games through this one and worked my way back through them all. So great to see the scope and skill evolve but Crypt Custodian truly feels like a crystalisation of everything they've been trying to achieve. This game ticks just about all my boxes and I absolutely adore it. I would buy it over and over again, every penny into Kyle's pocket is a penny spent for great independent video games and he has quickly become my new favourite developer. I bought Well Dweller day one. You should buy this, then go buy that, then buy the rest!
It isn't just a review, it's more of an appreciation post. Crypt Custodian welcomes you with a lighthearted story within a vast map full of quick snappy battles and little secrets typical of metroidvania genre. Yet it never becomes a burden, always respecting your time with gentle touches like having no death penalty or allowing you to teleport to any shrine whenever you want - which helps keep things fresh just long enough for story to quickly wrap itself up without being too overwhelming. But what I didn't actually know at first is that this game is made almost entirely by one person - Kyle Thompson (with the help of Eric Thompson's soft relaxing music). And that drastically changes your perspective on the game, the quality of its art and game mechanics, especially since it's already Kyle's third game release within a remarkably consistent two-year cycle, with yet another new title coming just in a few months from now. My sincere applause to you, Kyle!
A cute aesthetic Metroidvania that will challenge your reflexes and long-term memory. The game doesn't explain why the animals are anthromorphic in the afterlife, but the story is only one of the few weak points. You can mark the map with random symbols, so hopefully you remember what those symbols mean to you in the future. The Bosses are all challenging and you can revisit them in the optional Boss Rush mode. Took me about 15 hours to beat the game. Worth the price of admission. Pro-tip for the end game: In the Bug Catching event, you don't need to swing your weapon. Will make you rage a lot less by the simplicity.
The first cute-cozy metroidvaina I've ever played. The artstyle is really cute, the plot is really cute, the characters, the monsters, the bosses, the "backstory" pictures and every dialogue... everything is really cute. The puzzles are cool, not too over-the-top but not too boring either. There's some extra modes for those who want some challenge, otherwise all the collectibles and power-ups are doable without too much effort. Overall a chill and fun experience, would definitely recommend! Pluto is definitely a good kitty :'(
