10/10 Fully restored remaster of the 1991 MS-DOS platform game. This is type of modern versions of the old titles we all want to see - it feels like new game while maintaining the original atmosphere point to point. Everything here is highly polished and improved without any downsides and this is a lifesaver because original incarnation of the CC is absolutely rusted and it's hard to enjoy it. You get 3 classic episodes and brand new 4th, modern smooth graphics, new sounds and fantastic music, difficulty levels, saves, level editor, community-made maps, achievements and more, everything what meets todays standards. Gameplay is simple yet still demanding even on easy but it becomes souls-like on hard. And that's ok, Crystal Caves is very fair in its approach to the player - it's about precise, well-thought-out jumping and a bit of thinking. Core of the game itself stood very strong nowadays, still this is excellent tight platform game. Big replayability value included, you will want to back in here. Great experience for old heads and people who never played this sort of games as well. Take it as modern indie title and get a feel for what it was all about more than 35 years ago.
I'm glad developers are bringing back these Apogee classics. Emberheart Games put lots of care into the graphical updates without changing that unique DOS feel. Not to mention some very solid new content. It's basically a perfect remaster. Fingers crossed that the Commander Keen games, Duke Nukem 1+2, and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure get the same treatment someday.
Brought back so many memories and hit that nostalgia bone hard. I only had the shareware on an old 286 as a kid so being able to play through the full game 30 odd years later is pretty surreal. The gameplay holds up amazingly well and the care put into this remake is simply perfect, keeping the exact vibe but letting it run on modern systems. The secret level was also a cool easter egg with a nod to Alien Carnage/Halloween Harry. Probably one of the best little gaming experiences I've been able to relive in modern times.
