What a delightful game; an absolute breath of fresh air. It's a pure exploration puzzle-vania with no combat -- the gameplay loop is exploring so you can solve some puzzles so you can explore some more so you can learn the deep lore of its world. It's broadly similar to La-Mulana, but with no fighting. Like La-Mulana, this kind of game isn't for everyone, but if you're the kind of person who enjoys this you will *really* enjoy it. If you play metroidvanias for the exploration, play this game, you won't regret it.
One of the most delicately designed games I've ever seen, in a scale very few match. It's a game that's very hard to describe for others, but in a way that kinda makes it a bit more special for me. Still, for any and all puzzle game lovers, this is such an easy recommendation that I'm sure will blow your mind many dozens of times. It's also made in a really cool, open source engine that treats the game kind of like a retro game, which fits really well with the graphics and OST. Really banging OST by the way, that chiptune goes crazy hard. The only unfortunate blemish is that this game cannot ever be 100% on Steam, as there are two mutually exclusive achievements in the game, and getting one removes the other. Completely baffling choice, but I won't let that lower my enjoyment of the game.
An excellent secret-centric platformer hampered by frequently janky physics. The amount of knowledge-gated advancement is great, and the density of cool and rewarding secrets to discover is quite high, but my 40 hours of play (and 99% completion) probably included about 10-20 hours of unfun high-friction gameplay which, sadly, the developer cannot entirely fix (because too much of the game is built around it). My favorite moments were all the great discoveries (e.g. secret mechanics that always existed, ciphertext translation, rituals, uncovered details that teach me something new...), combined with the more interesting platforming puzzles (usually "optional" ones). My least favorite moments were (with some exceptions)... every "puzzle" involving apples (janky), worms (janky), sunflower seeds (janky), wolves/minks (janky), water (janky), boss battle (frequently reliant on one of the previous janky mechanics); the closest thing to "fast travel" in the game is cool but very high-friction for no good reason, and many of the late game puzzles require more and more of your time (either because they're janky, or because failure requires wasting time to reset and return to the previous position, or both). For fans of "metroidbrainias" this is a great choice, but you need to have a lot of patience (compared to other games). If this game was released 20 years ago, when players were less impatient, I'm sure it would have received plenty of awards and a dedicated fan base.
Have you heard of EMUUROM..? EMUUROM is an incredibly charming game with an extremely intricately woven design; the game truly feels alive, and everything matters. I implore you, please, truly listen to what it's telling you, don't just try to beat it and move on, there is so much to see. I had an extremely good time, and I miss it already. It's not a difficult platformer, there's no fail states, it isn't trying to be mean to you. I believe in you.
I've reached the credits (and the second ending), and while I have a lot more to dig into, I'm comfortable saying this is a really great game. I'm continually impressed with how deep a TIC-80 game can go with its small cartridge space! This really does scratch my Metroidbrania itch without being too twitch-reflex-based. In this game, you're tasked with recording the life of a dying world. There's no combat, just scanning and exploring. This is a fun mix up, and it's definitely appreciated that there isn't too much of a focus on fact-paced action... However, there are some segments that require it by the end of the game. I wasn't a big fan of those segments, but that's okay. The rest of the game was unravelling layers of secrets, which is such a joy here. Although I really recommend making annotated maps! The biggest problems of the game rear its head whenever you have to interact with the physics. Many parts of interacting with the game were a bit janky in a very hard to describe way, and it made for a lot of moments where I knew what I had to do but I had to take like six attempts to do it because physics objects zigged instead of zagged. (The "boss encounters" where you had to bounce apples around were nightmares because of this). I loved discovery, but execution was a bit of an issue. The graphics are good, par for the course for a TIC-80 game. The music is great. And the game is so very unapologetically Finnish, which is a nice touch. You had very well better get a dictionary out for this one, especially a few secrets deep. I don't know how I feel about the need for translation at certain points, but it certainly adds a charm to the game you can't find elsewhere. Still, I loved the time I spent with the game, for the most part. I can heartily recommend this if you'd like a diet La-Mulana with a little Void Stranger thrown in. I know I'm going to be delving further soon!
