An excellent secret-centric platformer hampered by frequently janky physics. The amount of knowledge-gated advancement is great, and the density of cool and rewarding secrets to discover is quite high, but my 40 hours of play (and 99% completion) probably included about 10-20 hours of unfun high-friction gameplay which, sadly, the developer cannot entirely fix (because too much of the game is built around it). My favorite moments were all the great discoveries (e.g. secret mechanics that always existed, ciphertext translation, rituals, uncovered details that teach me something new...), combined with the more interesting platforming puzzles (usually "optional" ones). My least favorite moments were (with some exceptions)... every "puzzle" involving apples (janky), worms (janky), sunflower seeds (janky), wolves/minks (janky), water (janky), boss battle (frequently reliant on one of the previous janky mechanics); the closest thing to "fast travel" in the game is cool but very high-friction for no good reason, and many of the late game puzzles require more and more of your time (either because they're janky, or because failure requires wasting time to reset and return to the previous position, or both). For fans of "metroidbrainias" this is a great choice, but you need to have a lot of patience (compared to other games). If this game was released 20 years ago, when players were less impatient, I'm sure it would have received plenty of awards and a dedicated fan base.

I've reached the credits (and the second ending), and while I have a lot more to dig into, I'm comfortable saying this is a really great game. I'm continually impressed with how deep a TIC-80 game can go with its small cartridge space! This really does scratch my Metroidbrania itch without being too twitch-reflex-based. In this game, you're tasked with recording the life of a dying world. There's no combat, just scanning and exploring. This is a fun mix up, and it's definitely appreciated that there isn't too much of a focus on fact-paced action... However, there are some segments that require it by the end of the game. I wasn't a big fan of those segments, but that's okay. The rest of the game was unravelling layers of secrets, which is such a joy here. Although I really recommend making annotated maps! The biggest problems of the game rear its head whenever you have to interact with the physics. Many parts of interacting with the game were a bit janky in a very hard to describe way, and it made for a lot of moments where I knew what I had to do but I had to take like six attempts to do it because physics objects zigged instead of zagged. (The "boss encounters" where you had to bounce apples around were nightmares because of this). I loved discovery, but execution was a bit of an issue. The graphics are good, par for the course for a TIC-80 game. The music is great. And the game is so very unapologetically Finnish, which is a nice touch. You had very well better get a dictionary out for this one, especially a few secrets deep. I don't know how I feel about the need for translation at certain points, but it certainly adds a charm to the game you can't find elsewhere. Still, I loved the time I spent with the game, for the most part. I can heartily recommend this if you'd like a diet La-Mulana with a little Void Stranger thrown in. I know I'm going to be delving further soon!

I'm of two minds about this game because there's a lot of neat concepts, the rabbit hole goes decently deep, and I overall found it compelling. But GOD is it annoying to play. Just, mechanically, the game is awful and unfun. Too much relies on weird physics jank all the time and it makes the "puzzles" more a matter of trial and error than anything, and often with weirdly stringent execution requirements for what bills itself as a "puzzle" game. And far, far too much of the game is "find the hidden passage" which, despite giving you a tool to detect fake walls, still remains more difficult and annoying than it really should. Also, the "nonviolent" aspect of the game is not fully true, regardless of which "ending" you take there will always be at least something equivalent to a combat encounter (and the deeper you go the more true this gets). Which. The game's mechanics aren't really designed for this and I felt a lot of the difficulty was WAY overtuned, especially for, again, a puzzle game. I'm trying to avoid saying too much since it's the kind of game that's easy to spoil, and I do like a lot of what's here, but I come away from the game feeling mostly mixed more than anything. It's got a lot of good ideas but rarely has a game felt more like the developer themselves is actively fighting against me than this one. So many baffling decisions and badly designed mechanics and, hhh. You're just super lucky I'm a sicko for this type of game otherwise I imagine I wouldn't have made it very far in.

This isn't a metroidbrania in the metroid sense, but is even more pure of a brainia than Animal Well was. The fact that the game can have boss battles without ever requiring anything that even really resembles combat is brilliant. Emuurom will appeal to a very specific demographic of people - I can't recommend this strongly to my friends who like metroidvanias for the combat and parry mechanics, but anyone who likes to explore an unknown world, make discoveries as they go, and feels a drive to complete puzzles for no reason other than the gratification of the solve will love this game. In other words, if you're the kind of person who went beyond collecting every egg in Animal Well just to see how deep the rabbit hole really goes, Emuurom is even more fulfilling. I'm constantly stumbling upon movement tricks, mechanics, and ways to solve puzzles in a way that feels simultaneously invigoratingly clever and obvious in hindsight. And that's before I've even begun to try to crack the runes and hidden language that is reminiscent of Tunic. Because of how niche this appeal is, I'd be surprised if Emuurom won any Game Awards at the end of the year, but this is already a contender for a personal GOTY and/or small dev/low-budget GOTY. Emuurom rocks. **EDIT** After significantly more time spent on this game and a drastic change of perspective, holy cow this game is amazing. It is insane how much depth can be captured by a simple 8x8 map.
