Good game, extremely on point with its concept, and very cool aesthetic work- especially with the cutscenes. I find that the main weakness for me was how the torture mechanic was handled; after you had spoken to all of the villagers, time would literally not progress until you employed the torture option. I feel like this undermined the conceptual strength of presenting it as an option, where you go from playing as a witchfinder for whom torture is as normal as talking, to an pawn which is metaphysically mandated to carry out such acts. Additionally, I think that this undermined the use of grotesque minigames for the torture mechanic. I think that this had so much potential to let the player sit with the cruelty of their own decision to take the torture option, but it just feels so much weaker when there is no alternative presented within the gameplay.

Hmm. Bought this dirt cheap in a discount bundle and appreciate the fact it's made by one guy. But to recommend it to others? That's a hard one. As the description says, you are a witch finder who needs to decide which one of the villagers is a witch. It's a very simple game. Simple graphics, a few single screen locations and some unique animation between each day. Can't say much else. Anything would be a spoiler. It really is what the description says: a story about the Scottish witch trials. Nothing more nothing less. Spoiler: no fairy tale! Now, how to rate. Did I enjoy this? Yeah, a little. Giving it a thumbs up because I get what the dev tried to do here. And for that, it worked. If you're still interested, go ahead. But don't expect a rewarding end.

What an absolutely brilliant work of art. Such a fantastic presentation of a folk horror setting, made even stronger through its choice of language, brooding monochrome stylisation, and eerily beautiful stop-motion animation. The archetypes of the characters are perfectly chosen, where each is at once undeniably suspicious and yet believably innocent. I usually look into alternative choices through forums, but this game was absolutely worth replaying several times over. I think it's a perfect, self-contained project that hits the nail on the head in every way for the concept it relays. When we search in fear for the Devil, do we stop to consider how he lives in all of us?

This art style is phenomenal! I see that the Dev of this game also made Dead Format, so their vision is in the right place and have the capability of making a grander game. I just really hope they make a sequel or return to this to flesh this out. I could see this game with multiple endings, false endings, multiple towns, achievements, but as it is its sooooo short. I understand the message of the ending, but could have used more content to get there. All that is to say that its still a gorgeous, Grim, hour long detective point-and-click for less than a coffee.

We need more equivalents of punchy, layered, short fiction in the gaming space. Mouthwashing immediately springs to mind–psychologically dense, interpretative, saying in one hour of play what mainstream games take 30hrs and worse. With that said, I'd like to recommend Daemonologie as a similarly packed work of gaming short fiction, and I do mean short: it's a whopping 30min, maybe an hour tops if you aim to explore all of its secrets. It doesn't need to be any longer than that, I'd say. It's a great, surreal, piece on power, corruption and the deleterious effect of religious authoritarianism on both oppressor and oppressed, like playing Ace Attorney if Phoenix's response to every mystery was a judicious application of church-sponsored violence and instead of psychic powers you had to work with oblique nightmares loosely interpreted as divine visions from a hateful and terrible God. ... so, Judge Claude Frollo: Ace Attorney, for all intents and purposes. Saying any more would be giving the game away. You need to experience it for yourself. I will warn, it's not for the faint of heart. I remember, after I was done playing, much like with Mouthwashing, I felt like a right piece of ♥♥♥♥, I never felt so in dire need of a shower, and I say that as a compliment. If both games highlight anything, it's the contextual nature of violence in gaming. Slaughtering wave after wave of demons in DOOM into visceral 1's and 0's? Sleep easy as night, they're not reflective of anything real, there's no psychological weight behind that violence. It has all the moral impact of stepping on marshmallows. Playing as either a delusional rapist or an equally delusional torturer, going to extreme lengths to ruin lives–and showing you that corrosive effect every step of the way? That hits differently.
