Dandy Ace is a stylish and energetic action roguelike that thrives on creativity, speed, and constant reinvention. Developed by Mad Mimic and published by NEOWIZ, the game casts players as a charismatic magician imprisoned inside a cursed mirror palace, forced to fight his way through ever-shifting corridors in order to reclaim his freedom. From the very first run, Dandy Ace establishes a playful tone, blending theatrical flair with mechanically rich combat that prioritizes experimentation over rigid mastery. At the heart of the experience is its card-based ability system, which defines how combat unfolds in every run. Instead of traditional weapon upgrades, players collect magical cards that can be assigned to different action slots, each offering unique offensive, defensive, or utility effects. What makes this system particularly engaging is that each card carries multiple properties, allowing synergies to emerge naturally depending on how abilities are combined. This design encourages constant experimentation, as even familiar cards can behave very differently when paired with new modifiers. The result is a combat system that feels endlessly flexible, where success often comes not from raw reflexes alone, but from clever build crafting and adaptability. Combat itself is fast, fluid, and visually expressive. Encounters unfold in compact arenas filled with enemies that demand awareness of positioning, timing, and attack patterns. Dodging, chaining abilities, and managing cooldowns become second nature as players grow more comfortable with the game’s rhythm. Boss fights stand out as highlights, combining spectacle with clear mechanics that reward learning and persistence rather than brute force. While the difficulty can spike at times, the game generally strikes a satisfying balance between challenge and accessibility, allowing players to improve through knowledge and experimentation rather than repetition alone. The roguelike structure reinforces this learning loop. Each failed run contributes to long-term progression, unlocking new cards, relics, and passive upgrades that expand future possibilities. This sense of forward momentum helps soften the sting of defeat and keeps motivation high, as every attempt feels like a step toward greater mastery. The palace layout may recycle familiar environments, but the constant reshuffling of enemies, upgrades, and ability combinations ensures that individual runs rarely feel identical. Visually, Dandy Ace is vibrant and surreal, embracing a bold color palette and exaggerated character designs that match its theatrical premise. The palace environments feel like living stages, filled with ornate details and shifting backdrops that reinforce the idea of a magical prison designed to confuse and taunt its captive. Spell effects and animations are flashy without being overwhelming, providing clear feedback during combat while maintaining a sense of spectacle. This visual energy plays a key role in keeping repeated runs engaging, even as players revisit familiar areas. Narratively, the game keeps things light and focused. The story serves primarily as a framing device, offering context and personality rather than deep emotional arcs. Dialogue with recurring characters adds charm and humor, reinforcing the protagonist’s flamboyant nature and the absurdity of his situation. While the narrative may not be particularly complex, it complements the game’s tone well, providing just enough motivation to keep pushing forward without distracting from the core gameplay loop. Sound design and music further enhance the experience, with upbeat and whimsical tracks that mirror the game’s pace and mood. Audio cues during combat are clear and responsive, helping players track enemy attacks and ability activations amid the chaos. The overall presentation feels cohesive, with visuals, sound, and mechanics all working together to reinforce the sense of magical performance that defines Dandy Ace’s identity. Despite its strengths, the game is not without limitations. Environmental variety can feel somewhat limited over extended play, and players who prioritize narrative depth or large-scale world-building may find the experience more mechanically driven than emotionally engaging. However, these aspects are largely overshadowed by the strength of the combat and build systems, which remain the game’s primary draw. Ultimately, Dandy Ace succeeds as a joyful and inventive action roguelike that rewards creativity, experimentation, and persistence. Its card-based combat system offers remarkable flexibility, its presentation is consistently charming, and its run-based structure encourages repeated play without feeling repetitive. For players who enjoy fast-paced action paired with deep customization and a playful sense of style, Dandy Ace delivers a polished and memorable experience that keeps its magic alive well beyond the first escape attempt. This is an overlooked, possibly misunderstood gem of a game. It is pretty dang tough, but seemingly out of nowhere, there was a recent update to the game to make it easier by letting you get a health flask to heal earlier in the game. After about 3.5 hours of playing, I got my first win and considering how short the runs are, this was probably around 10 attempts. Fortunately, there are 3 more difficulties higher than normal mode, so there is a reason to keep playing. I really like how the weapons system works in this game and I can't think of any that do quite the same thing as Dandy Ace. You have 3 different color cards to choose from (blue being dash, pink being main attack, and yellow being a special attack) and you have 4 slots to put them in. You can put any cards in any slot, so if you really wanted to, you can equip all dashes or all main attacks. However, this is when things get interesting... each card has a secondary affect and each slot will let you have one secondary card equipped. It is confusing to explain in writing, but when it clicks with you and you understand how to apply the cards properly, the game really opens up with an incredible amount of combat possibilities. Other things of note are the music and graphics being ultra stylish and add a lot of charm to this game. There are branching paths with different boss fights to see as well, so you don't have to repeat the same run every time. The voice acting is great BUT you almost have to mute it because the antagonist will not shut the fuck up the entire time you are playing. I am glad it is an option to mute that bastard and it is really my only complaint with the game. I am glad I bought this game and I plan on playing it to see the end of Nightmare mode.

Very good game, I discovered it after the Hades era and it's a great choice for those who like this genre of game. The combat is good, and the powers too, I don't remember much about the story but I think it's ok, and the voice acting changes everything and makes the game much more fun to play!
