March 2026
Despite what you've most likely heard about this game, Ultra Despair Girls is a very solid entry in the Danganronpa series, and I really recommend it to any fans of the series. I'll get to -those- parts later, but first I want to talk about the overall experience. It's gonna be one of my longer reviews so strap yourself in. The gameplay doesn't really have much to talk about, mainly that it's pretty dated even by 2014 standards when the game was originally released in Japan. It's a simple linear action-adventure game where you shoot Monokumas with a "hacking gun" with a run-of-the-mill upgrade system in the form of different types of bullets, plus you can tweak them a little bit more to your liking. You also have an 'ultimate' move in the form of Genocide Jill, whom you can also buy upgrades for with currency you earn by doing almost anything. The game is very dialogue-heavy, as you would expect a Danganronpa game to be. Other features include light puzzles and bossfights each with their own unique mechanics. Where the game really shines, though, is its story, world building and character development. I'll try to avoid spoilers until I say otherwise. The game starts with a couple familiar characters, as well as a couple new ones. It tells you just enough information for you to get your bearings as to where in the timeline you are, but still leaves you with lots of questions. While you progress through the game, you are given answers little by little, and the bigger revelations are saved for emotional moments, of which there are plenty. The real kicker is that whenever you think you might have the game figured out, it almost always manages to take you by surprise. Whenever you start seeing patterns, it breaks those patterns. While you might think that since this isn't a mainline entry, it relies too much on established characters and story arcs. I thought so too before I played ir, but was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it tell it's own unique story worthy of a mainline entry, it manages to weave itself in to the overall universe while still maintaining a balance of answering some questions but still leaving some open-ended. The main character you play as, Komaru Naegi, an average high-school girl, starts off as a perfect blank slate that over the game's duration gets molded in to an emotionally complex character with clear motives. She always reacts very believably to her surroundings, whether it was the horrors of witnessing the slaughter of countless of people, or the quips of her less-than grounded in reality counterpart, Toko. Even though I don't think I'm anything like Komaru, I still found it very easy to empathize with her. The writing, in classic Spike Chunsoft style, doesn't take itself very seriously, and has a lot of fourth wall breaks and clever self-commentary, for better or for worse. I'll get to that in a second. To address the elephant in the room, I'll now enter light spoiler territory for the 3rd and 4th chapters. I definitely see why some people dislike the game and might even drop it after Komaru gets sexually assaulted by a machine controlled by a child or when you see that same child in her underwear, but let me try to explain my perception on what purpose they serve. The game started with a very direct good vs evil plot device. But if that stayed the case, it wouldn't make a very interesting game. That's why they try to muddle your perception of what's good and what's evil. Kotoko's parents and the people they associated with were absolutely despicable people, yet there you are telling a child that she's in the wrong for hating adults. Forcing Komaru to go through a fraction of what she had to go through perhaps daily, was Kotoko's way of getting back at the world. Once you free yourself of the machine, you plunge Kotoko even deeper to the shame she grew up feeling by tearing off most of her clothes, and then stop her final attempt of fighting back by destroying her robot. And still you call yourselves the good guys. Another example of creating internal conflict is in chapter 4, where Haiji Towa, the leader of the resistance, basically admits to being a pedophile. Its purpose is to incite disgust towards him. This is the supposed "leader of the good guys". This guy is among the people you're trying so hard to save. Heavy spoilers for the ending up ahead, so if you still haven't played the game, I recommend you do. Those were the examples that are most talked about, but there are plenty more. All this leads to the choice of whether to destroy the controller for both the monokumas and the monokuma kids or not. If you had no internal conflict at this point of the game, you'd choose to destroy it in a heartbeat. But the more everyone starts pressuring you to destroy it and the more they start really showing their ugly sides, the less you want to do it. That's what made the ending so powerful to me. All in all, I think the only real problem in the scenes are what I talked about earlier, that the game doesn't take itself seriously. How the game comments on those parts doesn't differ at all from other horrible things that happen all the time, rather the problem lies in that we've come to expect it in those situations. It would've needed a drastic shift in tone for people to not interpret it as the writers trying to normalize it. After all, it's an important topic to talk about, and to acknowledge such things are happening to children all around the world. Only then can we try to change it for the better. The witers should've only been more respectful about it. It's taken me 3 and a half hours to write this review, and I might have to edit it later on if I find shortcomings or misinterpretations on my part, but I hope I've been able to convince at least someone to play this game.

Without getting into too much detail, most of this game's controversy involves the portrayal of a child character who's suffered through sexual abuse. Reactions to her role in the story range from disgust to respect. If you search you'll find many arguments that the game is engaging in the worst of sexploitation and fan service. Others however admire the game's approach to conveying the very difficult idea of a child becoming prematurely sexual due to her abuse. I tend to lean toward the latter arguments given my interpretation of the series, especially after playing V3, but do understand that this is a personal interpretation. You may not agree. In any case, regardless of your perspective, if this is not a topic you want in a game, avoid this game at all cost. It does not pull its punches. Otherwise this game plays like a less good but darkly funny version of the OG Resident Evil 4, centered around themes of child abuse. Like a lot of Danganronpa the writing is almost gleeful in its desire to hit you where it hurts, and the characters range from funny, disgusting, sad, and twisted, but almost always compelling. The writing is often as subtle as a punch to the head, but even so there is subtlety and finesse in how it frames those punches, and in its own way this is how the series finds nuance and makes observations. It is also very overwritten, like the other Danganronpa games, and some of the overarching story just isn't going to make sense. If you've played the series, you know how it is. In short, if the game's themes and my warning don't put you off, if you like Danganronpa, and if you like the mechanics of RE4, this game is worth a look.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a bold and interesting addition to the Danganronpa franchise. While it has its flaws, particularly in gameplay repetition and pacing, its engaging story and character development make it a worthwhile experience for fans of the series. If you enjoy a mix of action and narrative depth, this game is definitely worth checking out!

I've been playing the Danganronpa games for the first time in my life as an adult and its been an interesting experience. Before I started playing I was well aware there was some kind of low budget third person shooter midquel for the PS Vita that might harsh the vibe. If Danganronpa 1 is a compelling narrative on despair then Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is an uncompelling narrative on abuse, specifically of children. Don't take my use of uncompelling here to mean I hate the game, or that it in some way misses the mark. It would seem to me the writers have thought deeply about the ways young people are mistreated by adults. The game isn't just oblique metaphors for physical and sexual abuse, as a work it's clearly concerned with how control and power can effect young people. It's about the ones who did it and the ones who didn't stop it, its about the ones who lash out at those with less power than them, its about how that can easily repeat. Considering this is an action game for teenagers that might make my previous remarks seem a little absurd but I think that gets at the heart of what makes Ultra Despair Girls so divisive, I think that for a lot of people the juxtaposition of the themes in this game with its middling TPS gameplay and fanservice cutscenes and minigames, you know the one I mean will make for an awkward experience that undermines it's core message For some, including myself, that is what really sells it. I don't think this game would be as interesting if it didn't combine these elements, it's like the free time events between grizzly murders in the core series games, it just that it doesn't come together as well here. That is why I'm still thinking about this game I played 5 months ago. That I think, is why it works as a Danganronpa game. Little housekeeping: Play this for what it is, the PC port is serviceable if a little substandard. There are a lot of fun moments between the rather monotonous parts that'll keep you going, everything with Toko and Komaru is fantastic, they're a great pair and it really adds some development to Fukawa. And for god's sake play Danganronpa 1 & 2 first. it'll make a nice stop gap before the DR3 anime and DrV3 if you're blazing through them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6pVTktoD_g
