Dark Deity is a buggy and weird mess, but I can't help but love it. My review is after two playthroughs and 100% achievements. One playthrough was on normal, and the second was on hard mode. This game is basically a janky version of the GBA Fire Emblem games with a few unique twists that generally work out. While I recommend this game, there are some huge negatives that are going to completely ruin it for some people. Most of the issues come from the plethora of bugs and the absolutely awful enemy AI. Pros: - The game looks great and the battle animations are lots of fun to watch - The core Fire Emblem gameplay loop is here and it is done well. If you know how to play FE, you know how to play this. - The weapon upgrade system allows for a certain level of character customization. - There are some fun FE references that fans will enjoy - The game is a solid length clocking in at around 24 hours for a first playthrough. - Ever character gets branching class promotions, which then branch again at a later point. Mixing and matching classes was always fun. Neutral: - The game is painfully easy, even on hard mode. I am decent at FE, but am far from an excellent player and I still found myself a bit bored with the difficulty at points. - Units who die in battle do not stay dead, they just lose some stats and come back for the next map. Cons: - The bugs are truly awful and it is unbelievable the game launched with so many obvious, unavoidable bugs. See the section below for a list of bugs I encountered. - The enemy AI is braindead. The enemy will often rush head first into your bulkiest units while ignoring the squishy units within kill range - Dodge tanking is hilariously overpowered to the point of trivializing the entire game. - The story is all over the place and the party's logic was comically dumb at several points - Every single enemy always has a chance to land a critical hit, meaning rng can really bite you if it wants to - The inventory screen is incredibly clunky Bugs: Below is a list of every bug I personally remember encountering in my time with the game. Most of these bugs happened in the later half of the game. - Unit map sprites staying in their original location after moving. You have to select the invisible spot you moved the unit to in order to actually move them again - There are a few spots where you can phase or shove your units out of bounds - A treasure chest in one map can be opened infinitely if you have the inventory space for the item it spits out - A certain giant monster boss is incapable of counter attacking unless you attack two specific tiles of the ~16 possible options, completely trivializing the encounter - Three major enemy bosses with 1-2 range attacks will never initiate combat at one range. They will counter attack 1 range units, however. - Promoted archers with 3 range attacks are sometimes counterattacked by enemies with 2 range. Enemies with 2 range who counterattack in this manner will never double attack even if the game says they can. I have no idea how the game decides if this glitch happens, effectively making that archer promotion unusable against ranged enemies - A certain character's appearance changes as a part of the story. If you quit the game and reload, their appearance will return to normal for several chapters. This is not supposed to happen, as other characters comment as if that character still looks different. - One map crashed almost every turn on my first playthrough. It did not crash on my second playthrough. I have no idea what caused this, but some research has led me to believe it has to do with deploying certain characters on that map Dark Deity is a rough game that I struggle to recommend to most people, but I did have a great time with it. If you are a huge FE fan, try and pick this up on a deep sale and see if you like it!

This is a great tactics game, and I recommend it, with some caveats. I didn't realize until 20 hours in that there was a battlesave, so note the battlesave is on the loading screen in the bottom right. I did have quite a few crashes, and almost never got past the fight on the bridge because of a crash, but it turns out if you never move your Eastern troops past the barriers, the game won't crash and your Western troops can win the battle. But despite all that, I enjoyed the game so much that I worked through those issues and I definitely will play the sequel.

The game is fun, is it amazing?, no. Many reviews compare it to fire emblem (a triple A game) and that's not what this is. What it is, however, is entertaining for those people who enjoy combat in the fire emblem/shining force style. It's worth a run through if only to start playing the sequel which is fully voiced and much more thought out and well done.

Wish they would have stuck to the classic Fire Emblem control scheme as the mouse heavy interface makes it basically unplayable with a controller. Essentially a solid love letter to FE with some cool innovations and new gameplay mechanics, but lacking in some of the basic quality of life fundamentals that seasoned players would be used to.

It's fire emblem without permadeath, degrading weapons you have to re-purchase or a letter grade for your performance. It's all the juicy stuff you played that franchise for without the homework. Super fun nod to a classic and a modern rpg in its own right. Give this indie studio your money.
