If you're wondering which Europa Universalis game to play, this is still the best option. There's a reason EU4 generally has more people playing it on average than EU5 Unlike pretty much every other Paradox game, EU4 is a finished, complete, balanced, stable product. There will be no more updates, which sounds like a bad thing but given how almost every other Paradox game that isn't CK3 is being broken for months by poorly planned DLC and updates (Stellaris, Vicky 3), is unfinished (EU5) or is being filled with low quality DLC that makes the game worse (Hoi4), having a game like EU4 where you know it's not going to be broken by a future update or have a thousand new DLC shoved into it is very refreshing. Not only is this one of Paradox's most replayable games, but it's also home to what is perhaps one of the greatest total conversion mods in history, Anbennar, which is completely free and is good enough to be it's own standalone game in it's own right. There is lots of DLC, and it is expensive, but as with all Paradox games you get more than your moneys worth.
I wish EU5 had the same punch but right now it doesn't. EU4 is a gift to the grand strategy genre that makes other "strategy" games look like checkers. It's a lake with some rough edges, but it has an unimaginable depth. The best part, is like DayZ to ARMA, you get Anbennar as a secondary reason to purchase EU4.
Europa Universalis IV is, at its core, an excellent grand strategy experience, deep, rewarding, and still one of the best digital kriegsspiel style sandboxes out there. The way diplomacy, economy, and warfare interlock makes it genuinely satisfying to learn and master, and it’s the kind of game you keep coming back to for years. But it’s hard to ignore the business model: the sheer volume and cost of DLC, combined with a subscription just to access what arguably feels like the “complete” version of the game, comes off as excessive. More fundamentally, the underlying engine 'Clausewitz' is showing its age, performance bottlenecks, especially tied to single core limitations, feel increasingly out of place given how successful Paradox Interactive has been. With that level of revenue, it’s reasonable to expect more investment into modernizing the tech stack. So while it’s still a great game, and one I genuinely enjoy playing, it also feels important to be honest: the monetization and technical limitations are real issues, and I hope they’re addressed in future titles rather than carried forward. NOTE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THE SUBSCRIPTION FOR DLC : even owning a permanent license doesn’t give u real ownership since it can technically be revoked anytime, so paying a subscription just to access them for a month is legit an even bigger scam, only pay for it if you really think this is right : 'you'll own nothing and be happy'.
