A fantastic game that surprised me with just how great it is, especially for the price. The solo developer clearly has a lot of love for the game and is regularly pumping out significant updates that continue to enhance the game. If you think this game sounds like your kind of thing from the tags it has, then I assure you it shall be, I picked it up at 40% off during a sale and I actually felt like I ripped the dev off, so I bought the optional cosmetic content pack, which I don't think I've ever done for a game before. You'll certainly get bang for your buck with this game, I've put in 25 hours so far, and can see myself doubling that at least in the future, by playing on a harder mode and trying out the challenge modes. There's also a ton of achievements, that don't have ridiculous prerequisites, which is something I always find satisfying. TLDR: Amazing game, lots of content, ridiculously cheap price for the time you'll spend playing this
"Dead Grid" has been a lot of fun so far. I have completed the base campaign and moved into the "Aftermath" phase. Like most good squad-building games, this one lets you customize your unit builds and team combinations to create varied experiences in a fight. There are so many firearms, blades, clubs, explosives and buffing options that you can really build a squad in any way you like. Each individual unit can equip melee and ranged weapons plus some extra kit, like healing and tools plus some extra gadgets. You will have a lot of options and solutions when in combat. As far as the "base-building" goes, there is a lot going on, and it might feel a bit overwhelming for a while. If you have played "Xenonauts" and enjoyed that style of base-building, you'll definitely appreciate all the options in this game. You will be upgrading weapons, building out specialty rooms, researching tech trees and a lot more. Deciding how to spend your points can be a bit of a brain burner at first but some of the tech you will develop simply comes from repetition and suddenly the game will alert you that a new tech has finally been unlocked. Quite satisfying. Other than that, the game is very straight forward. You will clear out various areas of the campaign map and progress outward to tougher challenges. You'll complete tasks to earn rewards and build up your squad until you're ready to face the final showdown. Standard stuff but well implemented in this game. One final note. The combat, while turn-based, is not played on a grid of any kind. You don't have to consider positioning your units, line of sight or finding cover. Your squad is in one row and the enemies fill up another. You then click and drag to direct the action. It's a bit like a JRPG in some ways. One more final note: The sound design and music are both excellent. The combat effects definitely have a satisfying and visceral level of immersion. All-in-all, I am having a blast.
The last time I played this game, it didn't even have achievements. The items were completely different, and so was the combat. It already had its charm back then, but wow, has it improved. At just €12.50, this game is an absolute steal. It's rare to find a game made with this much care and attention to detail at this price. I've played plenty of turn-based games that cost twice as much and don't come close to this level of quality. Buying this should be a no-brainer. Now I'm back for my second playthrough, and I can honestly say this is one of the best indie turn-based battlers I've ever played. My favorite feature has to be the animated enemy "cards." They're beautifully done and add to the fluidity of combat. I also really like the map and camp systems. They offer plenty of meaningful choices without becoming overwhelming or feeling like a chore, which is a huge plus for me.
This game is a true labour of love. So many little details/animations and character Pics remind me of the good old days. The Weapons and Skills are brilliant and the enemies are varied and sometimes quite funny. Lots to see and do and extremely addictive. Go on ... give it a shot, the Devs really deserve a pat on the back for the effort put in :)
