A solid incremental RPG in the magic tower genre. (Where the battles are predictable and relatively simplistic, but the puzzle is how to use your resources to clear the entire dungeon.) Try the demo first, because if you don't like the genre or the interesting twists (alchemy is basically a factory-builder for upgrades) you're probably also going to dislike the game - but if you do like the genre, it's very good. The basic gameplay loop is that unlike most magic tower games, the (non-randomized) dungeons aren't designed to be beatable on the first day you have access, but the dungeon replenishes itself every day. Use alchemy (resources generated per day factory manager style) and loot from previous visits to purchase upgrades and equipment to fight your way through in the end. I haven't beaten the game yet and intend to edit the review when I have, but at $12 just what I've seen from the demo already justifies a positive review unless it takes a massive turn for the worse. (But I am a big fan of the genre. Again, try the demo first. They've been updating it, so I think it's functionally the same as the first three main-game dungeons. It works in english, even if it's name is displaying in japanese for some reason.) Edit: Having played through the game, I have to say it's pretty much completely lived up to my expectations. I do like that the puzzles that require outside-game-knowledge for bonus loot have skip buttons that either "I'll tell you the answer, write it down and you can grab it when you have the required progression" or "hey, free stuff for you" (Depending on the solution - any puzzle that offers to just give you the reward is something any player could reasonably do, if they knew the answer - for an example that is not knowingly spoilers - probably not actually in the game - switching your display mode from fullscreen to windowed and back while standing in a specific location.) Some builds and tools are fundamentally broken, but most stuff is either "seems reasonably balanced", "expensive/lategame" "just strong synergy" or "requires scarce resources". A few equipments contain random elements, but again - they're late-game and/or difficult to get in early-midgame.

This game originated from a particular genre which was called Magic Tower, essentially a hardcore math puzzle game where you need to optimize your fight choices. Depending on difficulty, one wrong move could end you up in a game-over situation. Reuinis kind of watered down that difficulty and added a lot of RPG elements, allowing you to take it nice and slow. You can still challenge yourself by setting up personal goals or whatever. Or, you can simply farm until ready and bulldoze through everything. Either way, this game requires calculation. As I said, math. It can either burn your brain or be child's play depending on your playstyle.

Haven't even come close to finishing it yet but I'm leaving a positive review with some thoughts. I haven't played that many magic tower games, but this is the most interesting one I have, because of how all the mechanics work together. This is decidedly not a puzzle game, instead it's more of an RPG, because you have a huge number of different pieces of gear and consumable items that work together to create distinctly different builds with different ways of heading through a dungeon. Any time I enter a dungeon I'm never taking the same route twice; the game always has me thinking about what my next move is and how my newly acquired gear contributes to my build to make getting through a dungeon easier. For example, one build is based around high defence and recovering HP each turn in battle, while powering up as each battle reduces my max HP; this one fares well against enemies with higher defence and weaker attack as the more turns pass the better. Another build is based around each battle triggering lasers that fire in a chain onto every enemy in range, which shreds enemies that have lower defences, while whittling down tougher enemies using temporarily generated consumables. The sense of progression is really great as you constantly push further on each new attempt at an area and open up new ones, while finding new gear to expand on what your builds are capable of.

My first foray into this genre, and it's something I never knew I've always wanted. Big fan of time and resource management in old Atelier games, and this game eats up hours in a very similar way.

Fantastic fixed-value RPG that basically ends up like a big optimization puzzle. I think I like Soulestination a little more - it's got so much heart - but this is also really good. When I first read the words 'run-based' I thought it was procgen, but it's not: it's a series of dungeons you push further and further through as you get better at the game and get more resources and staying power, then you hit the next dungeon and figure out how to push into that, and so on.
