April 2026
tl;dr gorgeous, gore-heavy zombie slasher with great performance and style, but dragged down by repetition and some truly braindead design decisions Overview Dead Island 2 takes you to “HELL-A”, a quarantined version of Los Angeles overrun by zombies. Alone or in co-op: you play as one of several survivors trying to navigate the outbreak, uncover what’s going on, and, most importantly, survive. The game is a first-person action experience with RPG elements focused on melee combat, exploration, and mission-based progression across different districts of the city. The Good Stuff From a technical standpoint, the game is excellent. It looks amazing and runs incredibly smooth. Aside from a few minor clipping issues and a single crash, it’s a very polished experience. The level of detail is genuinely impressive, especially when it comes to gore. The dismemberment system is outstanding: breaking bones, slicing limbs, and watching enemies fall apart never really gets old. It’s brutal, creative, and easily one of the game’s strongest aspects. HELL-A itself is a-mazing. The different areas are diverse, visually striking, and often surprisingly creative. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3655363680 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3693752616 Tone-wise, the game leans into a self-aware, very goofy narrative. The story is pretty run-of-the-mill on paper, but it knows that and plays into it. There’s a lot of influencer-bashing and occasional fourth-wall nudging, which adds a bit of charm. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s entertaining enough to keep things moving. The Sorta-Kinda-Grinds-My-Gears-Stuff Zombies constantly respawn, which is fine in principle, but the timer sometimes feels too short. Running through cleared areas can quickly become annoying when everything is back again almost immediately. The biggest issue is repetition. While the core combat loop stays fun thanks to the gore system, mission design is extremely formulaic. A lot of it boils down to fetching keycards, finding specific items, or revisiting areas. It gets old. Fast. The lockbox system doesn’t help either. They provide loot but need to be unlocked. Lockboxes are not clearly named on the map, so when you find a key, you often have no idea where the corresponding box is. This leads to unnecessary backtracking and guesswork. A simple journal or tracking system would have solved this. Enemy design also starts to wear thin. At some point, the game begins to throw large numbers of special infected at you, which shifts the experience from fun chaos to mild annoyance. It feels less like escalation and more like artificial difficulty. The DLCs are a mixed bag. "Haus" is very bizarre and tonally disconnected from the base game. While it hints at interesting ideas, it doesn’t really land here and feels out of place. I would totally play a psychological horror experience from the devs, but here I was simply glad when it was over. "SoLA" looks great, but gameplay-wise it leans on the things I find annoying and becomes a bit of a clusterfck. Lastly, the constant commentary and character chatter can become unnerving over time. The Atrociously-Bad Stuff Some quest designs are genuinely terrible. We’re talking borderline Uwe Boll levels of nonsense. Boss fights are also a major weak point. They’re not interesting, not challenging in a meaningful way, and often just frustrating. And yeah… fck Amanda. Achievement-Hunter-Things You’ll need to dip into co-op for full completion. Most achievements come naturally if you play thoroughly and explore properly. Nothing overly difficult. The only thing worth keeping in mind is a challenge called “Ninja” (dismember 3 zombies with one shuriken). It can be a bit annoying if you don’t actively go for it. The Cul-de-Sac area in the Haus DLC (houses with gardens) worked well for this. Nothing is missable, but being aware of certain challenges early on will save you some time. Conclusion Dead Island 2 is a game that absolutely nails its core fantasy: smashing zombies into pieces in a visually impressive, responsive, and satisfying way. It looks great, runs great, and delivers some genuinely fun, mindless carnage. Unfortunately, everything around that core starts to wear thin over time. Repetitive mission design, questionable difficulty spikes, and some baffling design choices drag the experience down more than they should. In the end, it’s a stylish, well-polished zombie apocalypse that is a lot of fun in short bursts but struggles to stay engaging over longer stretches. If you’re here for the gore and the setting, you’ll have a great time. Just don’t expect much depth beyond that.

This game does comply well with the rules of physics and logic. If the door is locked and it's made of glass you can just simply break the glass and enter.

The game is good but something is off about it and I think it's a compound of little things. - strange hitboxes, I swear it's really easy to misjudge distance and hit area - weapons have animations that just don't match their inpact - gunplay is not good, I gave up on guns playing the game, they are just very boring - weapons don't have a sense of inpact, for example huge hammers have pretty much the same inpact as tiny daggers - they dropped the ball by not having unique weapons as rewards for certain quests so you just get the same weapons all the time but just do more damage - the dodge system with stun + finisher really sucks and gets SUPER repetitive, it just takes too long, there is a reason that that thing is SUPER fast in games like DOOM for example, it also offers very little rewards even with a strong build - environments should be more destructible and you should be able to use it more not only the water/oil combo, it gets repetitive really fast - rage mode is boring, really, same thing as unarmed attacks just more powerful So, despite all that, it's a thumbs up because: - it runs INCREDIBLY well, for the amount of details this game has, it's amazing, unreal engine 4 was amazing and ue5 can suck my ♥♥♥♥ - the biggest of all, the vibe: I love that they didn't take themselves too seriously and really embraced the theme, LA is going to ♥♥♥♥ and streamers are still trying to making videos, gym bros are worried about their schedule, rich people are safer than anybody else, and chaos is supreme. Deep Silver never dissapoints with their enrvironments and this game is just funny af I wouldn't get this game full price, but if you can get it on sale, it will be worth the few hours you will spend on it. You will eventually get bored I am afraid.

Is it a kinda fun game? Yes it is, but its boring. Coming from someone who finds most games of this genre fun, there is just something missing. Stability is solid. Gameplay is satisfying. However thats about all this game has to offer. It feels oddly soulless to play. One of those games where you can enjoy playing it at the time, but its only getting you by. Just enough fun to prevent you from closing the game and never returning for your first few hours, but you quickly realize there isnt much of any variety left to offer after that. This is just my personal experience with the game. Im not saying you cant or wont enjoy the game, but dont expect it to be a classic you will constantly come back to over the years. If I had to rate this game out of 10, Id probably give it a 5. Average, but painfully so. Basic gameplay loop is a solid 7. Story is probably 4 or lower, honestly forgettable. Graphics are a high 7. Its biggest sin of course being its oddly boring nature that hits this one hard for me. Id recommend this game only if you can get it $20 or lower. Despite everything Ive said, I still gave it a thumbs up. Its an average game. As far as I know, there isnt any predatory microtransactions, its stable, and fun enough to get you by for awhile. There are far worse games and business practices out there. Cheers and love you :3

My favorite thing about this game is that in order to make it function at all, you have to mess around with the game files and disable the Epic Online Services connection completely. Thanks Epic Games! For anyone wondering, go into the game installation folder and add NoOperation=1 to the DeadIsland.ini file.
