Dead Take is a psychological horror walking simulator that takes place in a luxurious modern mansion, something you would see high in Hollywood Hills in LA California. In this game you solve puzzles in and around the mansion, while unlocking FMV videos to watch in the theater room of the mansion. The game has a light "Myst (1993)" style feel to it, with puzzles and clues unlocked while watching Full Motion Videos in the mansion's theater room. The horror aspects are pretty light throughout the game until the very end, most of the game is more "psychological" than "horror". The game takes approximately 3-5 hours to complete. + The setting is completely original. Instead of the usual horror setting as an old abandoned haunted house, this game is set in a beautiful modern mansion complete with gorgeous minimalist architecture. The graphics are really well made, the layout of the house is fun to explore, and the game has a nice sheen / polish to it. + The story is completely original and probably the highest point of the game. The way it all weaves itself together at the end of everything is outstanding. + The actors and actresses all act their hearts out in this game during the FMV videos. Outstanding work, all very clear 4K video. + The creepy atmospheric sounds of the house and the voices of the characters were really crisp and clear. High production values. +/- Mostly original puzzles, however a few near the end of the game were a bit too obtuse, didn't really know where to go at times or what to do. - Way too many "Static", "glitch", jumpscares during the FMV videos, headache inducing. Annoying. - Huge pet peeve of mine, there is no way to turn off the subtitles in this game. Ruins the immersion. In a sea of walking simulator horror games, this one definitely has a unique atmosphere and an interesting story. For someone that wants something a bit more slow and mature than the usual. Overall: 8.5/10

Dead Take is a video game that took me by surprise, as this is not the normal content featured from the developer Surgent Studios. Now that I have played Dead Take I can sincerely say, I need more content like this from this studio. A true thrill of a video game, lets talk about the pros and cons.. PROS: Graphics - Dead Take is sincerely a beautiful game. Creepy, dark, broody and overall unsettling. The lighting is phenomenal in this game. It is STUNNING. The shadows hit perfectly in everyway to create a setting that is truly uneasy. The mansion is beautiful, the landscape is nice to look at. Every single piece of the mansion can be explored in great detail. It is truly a massive step in the right direction from the studios previous game. Level Design - This game has incredible level design, with many short cuts, unlockable rooms and it all flows VERY nice to create this one gigantic mansion that is super fun to explore. Story / Writing- Dead Take features a very intriguing and very interesting story. The developers did not pull any punches and since the game is based off the real life experiences of actors in hollywood, it explores dark themes that as tied with that same profession that most want to ignore due to it being "problematic". I was shocked that they would go as far as they did, especially with the symbolism all around the game. Honestly incredible work, I was hooked from start to finish. Gameplay - Dead Take features simple yet effective gameplay. The game features a lot of puzzles that will constantly keep you thinking. The puzzles are actually a lot of fun and the amount of lore that you experience during and after each one is truly fun to experience. The exploration is great as well, with plenty of lore items all throughout the mansion for you to piece together what happened. The random text messages and voice messages add to the "always being watched" uneasyness. I genuinely enjoyed it. Actor Performance - Dead Take features real life actors throughout hollywood and the gaming industry that do a great job at their performances. Not all of them do a incredible job, but most do. The characters of Vinny and Chase were exceptional and really sell the story well with their performance. Overall I loved the in-game showcases from them as you piece the story together. CONS: Game Length - The game is extremely short. I completed it within 4 hours and got most achievements for it. Granted you can 100% it and try to get a couple more hours for it, but tbh this is a one playthrough kind of game in my opinion. I only list this as a con because of the cost AND the fact that I truly wanted more, but as with most good stories, sometimes its better kept shorter and doesnt overstay its welcome. Regardless I think another 2-4 hours somewhere would round this out perfectly. Over reliance on horror tropes - So the game is so obviously their first attempt at horror / psychological thriller. They definitely did a banger job and i truly recommend the game, but the game also over relies heavily on jump scares and typical horror game tropes. You can tell this was their first outing but with the setting being so creepy and overall unsettling, they definitely hit the tone right. I think more creepiness and less obvious jump scares would do wonders to take this to the next level. Overall dead take is a win for surgent studios and proves they are capable and bringing a extremely fun and truly creepy experience in their games. I think psychological thriller is something they do very well and I would like to see more. I am giving this game a good review because I do believe it is worth the money and gives an adequate experience. In my opinion the game was fine. In fact my problem is that the game was too fine. Performances were good. Puzzles were fine. Jump scares are admittedly cheap. When the story shined, it shined momentarily - but overall it was fine. To give more context on my perspective, I have to give spoilers: During the final act, the game starts pushing the limits of psychological horror with twisting rooms and mounts of flesh and mannequins blocking your path - but I felt like this was not exactly earned. There were areas where psychological horror was utilised but I felt it was only drip-dropped in certain areas, or not pushed to it's full potential - I never felt any build up, or any consistency of the game toying with your senses. This made me feel like the ending segment went from 0 to 100 in a second. Furthermore, near the end of the game you are given a blue-light to reveal hidden messaging and solve a few puzzles - but this was so short that by the end of the game I felt disappointed that they did not utilize the mechanic further. I really loved the story between Neil Newbon and Ben Starr's character, but again, I feel that there was not enough there. I want more, I want to know more about their dynamic and their competition - especially with Duke. And just when I think I might get more, the game is over. Thinking about all of this, I suppose a really good aspect of the game is that, as corny as it sounds, it does leave you wanting more. Part of me believes that there is DLC potential to this game, but only because I want more. I want more mindf**ks, consistent psychological torment, twisted puzzles, more story and dark themes. I have nothing but the utmost respect for team behind this game as I know that it is their post-debut. That being said please give us more in the future and push more boundaries, I thought the ending segment was really cool and I want more of it :(

This was an instant purchase for me, and it is like someone looked inside my brain at what I would love in a game, and put it all into Dead Take. I adore FMV games (Contradiction is my all-time favourite), and I adore psychological horror and escape rooms. The escape room aspect is done really well, with puzzles that require a bit more thinking than just "find object, put object here" (although some of this style of puzzle are well incorporated too). Dead Take's psychological horror comes in the form of the knowledge that, while this is a game, there are so many similar stories from similar figures in our entertainment industry, and we will never really know a public figure, performer or producer unless we know them personally. The splicing gameplay is fun as well, allowing you to find new information about these characters. There is a lot to love here, and although it won't be a game for everyone, it was definitely a game for me.
