A recommendation exclusively aimed at Deadly Premonition fans, capable of playing through the most dull and mundane game to extract some of the best character moments and genuinely inventive and touching story that explain and expend on questions left opened by the first game; the sequel being otherwise way less enjoyable to play than the original game. — So my main gripe here is…the gameplay. The problem with DP2 is that…most of the game, you are following the prompts of a magical NPC who points you towards somewhere in a very empty, very flat, very boring looking town, to start a conversation, then go to the next place. You do that on a skateboard that can barely go up a sidewalk without the character fully stopping, because there is no car anymore for the player. That being said, there are no cars for the NPCs either; you’ll have to dodge approximately three cars in an entire 20hrs run. That also being said, there are barely any NPCs in the streets, so that might explain why there are no cars, if no people live in Le Carré; and when NPCs pop, they pop in your face, like two meters away. DP2 doesn’t make up for that with cool character interactions outside the main story. Except the one bowling quest that manages to have both some character development and a acceptable bowling gameplay, the rest is either tedious gameplay wise, or uninterested in the NPCs, or both. The skateboard parcours are relying on the least playable skateboard mechanic you’ve ever played (wtf is wrong with jumping???); skipping stone is super limited; the photo collection starts interestingly enough, but asks you to find A HUNDRED locations…and none of these quest lead to satisfying knowledge about their linked NPCs...if an NPC is involved at all. The only “highlight” gameplay wise (outside of bowling) is the return of the weird sections; which is saying a lot about how barren the gameplay is. They take a more dungeon crawling aspect, you only have one weapon, and there are three type of enemies…and the game throws hundreds of ammos at you, so no challenge for you…I love the vibes in these sections, but come on. At least the boss fight are consistently cool visually… Look, DP1 is one of my favorite games of all time, but I’m not delusional enough to believe it is a spotless game, especially mechanically. The thing is, it was still more diverse and also had cool side stories to link the mechanics together in one experience... There still are, pepper spread around the main missions, some profiling segments, recap of the mission etc. that manage to glue back the attention to the game and its story. — Storywise then, this isn’t an Uncharted 2 or Arkham City situation. Dead2y Premonition is a sequel that makes no sense, and is hardly enjoyable without prior knowledge of the first game. Throughout most of the game, you reprise the role of FBI agent Francis York Morgan (I’ll just call him York, since that’s how everybody calls him) as he “stumbles” upon a gruesome murder case in Le Carré, a small Louisiana town, during his vacations in 2005. Most of the game takes place in Le Carré, where you’ll roam around the town, following the main missions that are often prompted by York’s weird hallucination of a vaudou friend, Houngan (the magical NPC I mentioned earlier). All of this is contextualized through another narrative layer : Francis Zach Morgan, being interrogated in his flat by two FBI agents, fourteen years later, in 2019. So the main gameplay is Zach/York reminiscing about the case, while being pretty much suspected of having a responsibility in both the Greenvale and Le Carré cases. Although the premise is fun, and a lot of compelling questions are raised early to compel the DP and Swery fans, a good half of the game is flat as f’ck in terms of storytelling. The fault mostly lies on the Le Carré casting being…kind of cool, but not super deeply explored, as I mentioned earlier. And outside of Patricia, her father Melvin, and a couple of characters from the Clarkson family that is the center of the main plot, the main story doesn’t feel as personal as it could be…at least in the first half. Thankfully, there is a point where sh*t start hitting the fan, though. So it’s not a complete desert in terms of emotions. But depending on how you play the game, and how patient you are with fourth wall breakingly bad video game quests, the last third might happen too late. A shame really, because when it gets good, I’d say DP2 does a wonderful job expanding on what Deadly Premonition’s weird universe set up in 2010. — TL;DR It's still janky, it's still funny, it's still dramatic, it's still infuriating at times...it's Deadly Premonition alright. A lesser one, but one nonetheless. For DP1 fans ready for about 15 hours of slow skateboarding, not much NPC interactions and dull gunfights that lead to 5-6 hours of pretty great expansion of DP1's lore, while providing another ending to the story of Zach and York.
I've played both 1 and 2 and love these games. They're so perfectly weird and annoying. I feel like you have a to be a certain kind of person to enjoy these games they're not for everyone. Deadly Premonition 2 was a bit more janky than 1 especially with he skateboard but still fun nonetheless. The parallels to Twin Peaks are a big win. If you don't mind lagging, clipping, and general awkward graphics but love a weird as heck detective story this game is for you.
Yes it feels and plays like a PS3 game, but it's just one of those games that if you get it, you get it. For fans of Twin Peaks and general bizarreness. I'm about halfway through now but was so glad to find that there was a sequel to a classic original that I deeply enjoyed. So far, so good.
This sequel is a different flavor from the first. You see a lot of similarities with the first but it plays like its own, for better or worse. It takes some time but DP2 really started to grow on me. The cars from the first game are replaced by a skateboard which sounded like a let down at first but honestly it's nice to switch from walk to skateboard on the fly rather than running back to the car. The charms are a nice addition that can change up the combat and gameplay. The combat is...interesting. Only one weapon but its properties can be changed at the voodoo alter. And the shooting feels very "low budget indie". But the story is still great and feels like they really tired to earn that M rating this time around. And So far I haven't experienced any crashes. Load times can be annoying and sometimes there is some frame drops but nothing too awful. I really enjoyed this game despite the flaws and would recommend it if you enjoyed the first game. Its not exactly the same as the first so it is a different yet familiar experience. SWERY does it again, eh Zach?
