Note: Consider this review as neutral/informative, not positive. Despite the outstanding pixel artstyle and great music, I liked Decarnation less than I expected. The story's presentation felt off, and I couldn't really empathize with Gloria, even though I think I understand what she has been through. The dream sequences are decent by themselves, but they felt disconnected from other aspects of the game. The gameplay is a mixed bag; there are some neat puzzles (such as the ones that require you to move three chess pieces), but others can be confusing or annoying. When I played the demo, I thought it could be one of my favorite RPGMaker-esque psychological horror titles, but in the end, it's just a mediocre game. I only recommend this game when it's on sale, after you tried the demo and read more reviews.
Decarnation is a linear psychological horror game that also feels like an interactive movie with a great art style. The pixel art is beautifully detailed and perfectly crafted. It does a great job at being grotesque which ties perfectly into its story that handles many sensitive themes. The soundtrack is great and fits really well into its theme. Gameplay is not bad as it’s mostly a walking simulator with puzzles and rhythm games thrown in.
This is a well crafted experience with beautiful art, but I would argue it almost does not constitute being called a game in a traditional sense. The gameplay elements are extremely bare bones, with rhythm mini games being most of the content, some simple puzzles mixed in. Exploration is also nonexistent; all paths are completely linear, with the only flavor text as a reward for going off the beaten path (when there even is one). I may come off as sounding negative here, but if you go into Decarnation with the mindset of experiencing it's story vs playing it I think you will still be very satisfied. The story, art, and sound design are all fantastic, and I had no issues staying invested, as I always wanted to see how the story progressed or what the next environment would look like. It is definitely something worth checking out if you like surreal horror. I feel like Decarnation has a marketing issue, as I was led to believe this would be more of an action/adventure/survival horror experience based on it's screenshots and description. What I instead got was something more akin to a visual novel or "walking simulator". While this is different than what I anticipated, I still very much enjoyed my time with the game.
I just finished the game in one whole sitting, and TBH, this one is a little difficult to recommend. The experience overall with the story was great. The art is incredible. But I just didn't enjoy the gameplay as much. A lot of scenes felt like they dragged on, and I felt like this would have been better off as a TV mini-series. HOWEVER, if you find this game intriguing to you, I do recommend you experience this game for yourself. I don't think I've ever played anything like this before.
