Dragon Quest is always a fun franchise to play, even if i haven't played too many games in said franchise. That said, DQ Monsters was a first for me. I half expected it to be Pokémon-like but it definitely is not. I will say, if you are expecting and desiring it to be like Pokémon, you will likely be disappointed. The games story is... not good. Its pretty bad. The story is largely an afterthought which is unfortunate. Pacing is in my opinion pretty bad. But it could also have been because of how I played the game. For this review I will say the game is divided in 5 parts. Tutorial, early game, mid game, late game, and post game. The pacing in the beginning feels horrible. Its not until I was finished mid game (and the game will quite literally tell you when this happens) that I really started to enjoy the game. It also doesnt help that up until then, the game was braindead easy, without even trying. Further it wasn't until mid to late game that I finally found monsters I actually liked, but even in the late game you are still running into some of the same monsters from early and mid game (some literally the same, some are recolours, typical for DQ) Monsters: I was pretty much just using whatever I could synthesize and tried aiming for good stat spreads but even then found I just picked what looked cool. But they key is to synthesize and upgrade your talents. However scouting new monsters was a bit of a hassle. The scaling on scouting before "finishing" each area was pretty abysmal. There is a lot you can do to increase it, but without clearing the story portion of the area first I was getting maybe 30% scout rate. I specify this to say, scouting mechanics is annoying. I didnt enjoy, and found it way too finicky. Synthesis: this part of the game is so in depth and the game really only touches the surface on how it works. For most of the game its straight forward. Combine A and B to get your choice of 2-6 monsters to pick from. Luckily tiers dont make much of a difference a Rank E monster can just be good as Rank S if built properly. However that is also frustrating in and of itself. For the most part getting Rank A or above monsters will likely be a post game situation unless you really put in the grind in the late game. This is partially because grinding exp post-game becomes significantly easier but also because synthesizing reduces your level back to 1 which drops your stats. That said the game is easy enough that it wont matter if you do or dont. Dont stress about the rank too much but I found it disappointing that not only were A ranks and above so rare (you wont be scouting them in the wild) but even B ranks were a pain to scout. I did put in the effort to get a couple A ranks and an X rank but ultimately for the 3-4 hrs it took for me 2 A ranks and 1 X rank, I only used the X rank in my team and even then only for the short post game and the coloseum, and the coloseum is a piece of cake by the post game. So all in all I could have just not done that and finished the post game that much quicker. That said the post game is where the challenge is. It requires some degree of tactics. You dont need any specific monsters but you do need to balance your team to counteract enemy shenanigans and I wish more of the mid to late game was like that. Id give this a 6/10 personally. Grab it on sale. You'll either like it or not. Its worth trying st least, but the beginning is imo a slog so give it a good 4-5 hrs before writing it off. Sorry for the wall of text. Wanted to get my thoughts out but also avoid spoilers but also being as informative as I can.

I've only played the original DQM on Gameboy, and the first Joker on DS, but this one was still a really good romp, in my opinion. Some people complain that it's not as good as previous titles etc., and I agree with some of those points, but I'm really just happy to see more DQM in general. This game DOES need some more post game content, it lacks heavily in that department. So far it's not a whole lot, and I remember Joker having a good amount of content when the main story was over, and this game doesn't have much outside of the DLC dungeons (DLC was included in the base Steam version). There's already a good chunk of monsters to choose from, the Roster is like 526 or something like that, so fusing monsters is also a fun little time-sink. It's pretty easy to make some powerful monsters, too, so you can take some personal favorite monsters all the way through (Within reason, of course lol), but there's definitely a certain few monsters that are just basically "Fuse this party to win the game". Some people are upset there's no PvP, but I'm in the minority, because I'm just here to collect lil goobers and doofuses, and gawk at Akira Toriyama's art, so I only did the auto-battler like 2 or 3 times. Battling or doing something co-op with friends would be fun, though. Took me 60hrs to do most of the content aside from farming eggs and finishing the Monsterpedia, and I had a good time during it. The story should've had more choice, and had a LOT of, "But thou must!" moments, but still a good time!

Cleared the game with 100% Trophy completion. Plot: Nothing special or memorable about the story but still decent to good. Music: Yep, Dragon Quest BGMs and Themes are always top tier. Characters: I'll probably forgot about all the cast and even the plot after a week or 2. GAMEPLAY The Ws - Monster collection is fun. You dont really train your monsters but your grind them to level then combine them with your other monsters to create a much stronger one. I cleared the game with a Tier D monster as main DPS and Tier B supports. - Classic Turn Based Battle system. - Over-world roaming is fun and the graphics and BGM are perfect. - Overall difficulty? I'm sure its not in the "Hard" mode and there's no option to adjust the game difficulty. - Appearances of casts and bosses from other Dragon Quest games. The Ls - There is no CASINO! - No over-world flying and mounting feature. - No item synthesis, the thing you synthesis are the monsters themselves. - Stats are super simple, no stats rabbit hole. Just a short and quick review. Game is good, fun and worth the price overall. I recommend. 6.5 / 10

Dragon Quest Pokemon is another super neat spin off title. There are 20 different areas to explore, and gather new monsters, and hundreds of different monsters to collect. You then take a bunch of these monsters and use monster synthesis to create new ones you can't find on the maps. There are also a number of accessories to equip to your monsters for extra abilities and stats. There are two different arenas to battle other monster trainers as well as an online arena though not sure any one still frequents that. The story is fairly long and fun to play through but not exactly a riveting tale. Overall this has been a fun experience!

I discovered Dragon quest with monsters joker 1, so of course I love this one despite it's flaws, it's a pretty good game. Please Square Enix bring all Dragon Quest games to steam, including the spin offs (the other DQM games), and also it would be nice to be able to buy the OST
